I have a mapped drive on the network and when I access if from the My Computer window I get the Open With window asking me what program to use. But if I right click it and choose explorer then it opens.

Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.
When I open my documents, it assigns all my text files to open in Word Pad. I would like it to open assinging all my files as Microsoft Word files. How can I change this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I attempt to play or stream music from a web site, I no longer have the options of "open, save, cancel", I only have the options of "save" or "cancel." The dialog box indicates that "m3u" or m3ulist" files are an unknown type.. This wasn't always the case, at one point things worked just fine. How do I get my computer to recognize and "open" these files without having to "save" them and play them from the saved file? Once saved, they will play in Windows Media Player.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHi, I am having a weird problem. I cannot change what programs I use by defualt to open windows files. It does not matter whether I right click on a certain file and choose open with or if I use the tools option in the folder menu. This is what happens. I want to open a .jpg file with picassa photo viewer. I right click the .jpg file and choose open with. I then click browse to locate the .exe file that will open it. Well once I click it I get sent back to the open with window and nothing has changed. The .jpg file will not open with any program that can open it and it will not add the .exe file into the window. This is a bit frustrating as I cannot change what opens certain windows files by default. This goes for any type of file I try to open with any program.

I don't know when this broke, I know I used to be able to open chm files with no trouble but I can't pinpoint the last time it worked.I've searched around and found some references to this, but no solution -the only relevant MSKB is for Win98. I tried regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx, deleting the hh.dat files, clearing IE's file cache; nothing has helped. I haven't made any significant recent changed to the system that I can think of.

View 14 Replies View Relatedwhen i double click on "My Computer" in the desktop it opens with the "folders" part open on the standard buttons i.e its just like right clicking and exploring. plus i also realised that right clicking on my computer has the explore option first, and then comes open. And also, when i double click on any of my drives in the "my computer" it pops up an error, and the right click option is again wierd, but different this time, the 1st option is autoplay, then comes open, then search then explore. The drive doesnt open with "open" and "autoplay" but only opens with exploring and not only , but the drive opens in a new window.

In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).

View 2 Replies View RelatedSometime over the past couple of weeks, I started having a number of files on my C:/ drive which would not open. I wrote another forum and got some advice, and did some studying, and for some I was able to take back permissions and found what looked like a phony user account hidden way down in Documents and Settings.
Today I found close to 2/3 of my files would not display, of the types, htm and html, jpg, png, and doc files. I went to check permissions and the security tab was not under Properties.
I have tried everything: I have re-installed Windows, I have run every virus and adware and spyware scan and repair known, and have constantly cleaned the registry and used HiJack this which did show two programs called Voodoo and Banshee which were not mine.
My browsers, particularly IE (6) dont always respond when I try to open them. With IE about half the time when I click the icon nothing happens. If a then check task manager IE is indeed running and taking up about 14K of memory, but it never opens. If I try opening it again another instance will just open under task manager and nothing will show up. Now if I end all the IE processes in there and then start IE again it'll be fine. But I need to get this fixed.

I did not buy it, but I did a system restore and then after that, the hy-jacking thing was gone, but I now cannot access my pictures, it says access denied, and some of my My Pictures folders just freeze up, when I try to open, however, they are saying "file is empty", don't know if the files are corrupted or what. They are artwork picture files of eight years of work.
