Search Option Opens Up By Default Instead Of The Open Option
Aug 10, 2006I use Windows XP SP2. Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.
Open Option To Open Optical Drives?
Dec 21, 2006Since I can "eject" the cd through right-clicking on the drive in my computer, i was wondering if there is an "open" feature, since my new case has drive cover, like the example below:[img]http://images1.chiefvalue.com/productimage/11-212-031-04.jpgp/img]since i have an old DVD drive the button is place differently from the button placed on the case, so i'm thinking of alternatives ways in opening the drive or if there's an easier way to approach this.what do all the function keys mean anyway? (F1-F12)

Oct 13, 2008when i double click on "My Computer" in the desktop it opens with the "folders" part open on the standard buttons i.e its just like right clicking and exploring. plus i also realised that right clicking on my computer has the explore option first, and then comes open. And also, when i double click on any of my drives in the "my computer" it pops up an error, and the right click option is again wierd, but different this time, the 1st option is autoplay, then comes open, then search then explore. The drive doesnt open with "open" and "autoplay" but only opens with exploring and not only , but the drive opens in a new window.

Apr 25, 2007Hi, does anyone know of a method to undo the deletion of a parittion that was deleted using Disk Management in XP? Partition Magic wasn't opening correctly, so I used Disk Management to delete a 1 GB swap (logical partition, about in the middle of the physical disk) I searched around the Disk Management tool bar and didn't see anything about "undo"it deleted instantly. No down time to process...
all located within ONE primary partition at the end of physical drive, there were 3 logical partitions: one swap, two NTFS.The two logical NTFS partitions were physically behind the swap partition on the drive. (One 12 GB NTFS partition immediately behind the swap, and a 30 GB NTFS partition behind that) When the swap was instantly deleted, it also *instantly* deleted the 30 GB partition ( < 1 GB free) It left the 12 GB NTFS partition (also < 1 GB free) alone.
Cannot Undo Tile - Change Winndow Size Permenently Fails
Dec 12, 2008I opened two internet explorer windows by clicking the shortcuts on the quick launch bar.
I tiled these windows vertically ( windows xp home edition ).
I right clicked on the task bar and clicked on the undo tile option.
This appeared to work - however clicking the internet shortcuts on the quick launch bar on another day produced a window of tile size.

In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).

Mar 25, 2008My browsers, particularly IE (6) dont always respond when I try to open them. With IE about half the time when I click the icon nothing happens. If a then check task manager IE is indeed running and taking up about 14K of memory, but it never opens. If I try opening it again another instance will just open under task manager and nothing will show up. Now if I end all the IE processes in there and then start IE again it'll be fine. But I need to get this fixed.

Sep 3, 2009Hi, I am having a weird problem. I cannot change what programs I use by defualt to open windows files. It does not matter whether I right click on a certain file and choose open with or if I use the tools option in the folder menu. This is what happens. I want to open a .jpg file with picassa photo viewer. I right click the .jpg file and choose open with. I then click browse to locate the .exe file that will open it. Well once I click it I get sent back to the open with window and nothing has changed. The .jpg file will not open with any program that can open it and it will not add the .exe file into the window. This is a bit frustrating as I cannot change what opens certain windows files by default. This goes for any type of file I try to open with any program.

I don't know when this broke, I know I used to be able to open chm files with no trouble but I can't pinpoint the last time it worked.I've searched around and found some references to this, but no solution -the only relevant MSKB is for Win98. I tried regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx, deleting the hh.dat files, clearing IE's file cache; nothing has helped. I haven't made any significant recent changed to the system that I can think of.
