I had a new motherboard installed in my laptop and now i cannot open a folder in my Documents and Setting. I am the administrator of the computer and i read the thread about taking ownership, but i am confused as to how to start on safe mode. I am not too knowledgeable about this sort of things .

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using XP home and just added my old ntfs disk to my system. I can't access certain files because of a, "access denied", error message. The disk has tons of bad sectors on it and I can't take it with me into safe mode so I can take ownership of it with the admin account. Any suggestions on how to get to my ntfs files without going into safe mode? In normal mode, I don't have an administrator account, just my account with my name which has administrator rights. I know the admin account is still there, but I can't get into safe mode with the ntfs disk.
View 2 Replies View RelatedTo begin with. My Hal.dl file ended up missing, so I got an error and had to reinstall windows, bla bla bla bla. i didn't lose all my data, and just reinstalled windows. I had to reinstall all my programs again, and everything went swell, untill I hit one problem. I had a ton of data (over 15 GB of pictures/music, etc) on my desktop. Since it was on my desktop, I now have my previous user folder in my documents, and I am un able to open it, delete it, rename it, etc. I know that the data is still there because when I check how much of my drive is taken up, it is obvious. View 5 Replies View RelatedI made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.
However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".
The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".
This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.
In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find
For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open
Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?
I just finished a complete reinstall of Windows XP. Before the re-installation, I partitioned the hard drive. I want the basic Windows XP system files and drivers on my "C" drive and then I want to accumulate data files (word processing, spreadsheets, photos, music files, etc.) on the new partition which in this case has been labeled the "G" drive. The difficulty I am having is getting getting the "Documents and Settings" to move over to the "G" drive. So that when I want to load photographs from my camera to the computer it goes for C:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Instead I would like it to go to G:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Using Windows Explorer I changed the file name of "My Documents" to 'Windows XP old path My Documents" and then I was going to set up a new path to the "G" drive through Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Managment>Disk Management.
However I noticed that when I clicked on Start in the bottom left hand corner and it puts up that little window that "My Documents" which was listed now had the new title 'Windows XP old path My Documents' which I believe means I haven't gotten to the proper place to change the main configuration for Documents and Settings. Long way of saying how do I change the basic configuration for where Document and Settings are stored to a new location.
Does anyone know how to take ownership of a file using a script?Or any tools that a script/program could invoke to do this?

I've been told to right click folder, properties, and then go to security tab. Well there is no such tab. I'm using Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and there are only "General", "Sharing", and "Customize" tabs
Ever since I set it up I have not been able to access the user profile folders on the server.
Yesterday I had to get into one of them (A security issue!(another story)) And eventually I found out that the reason I was getting the message
'Access Denied'
Was because know one actually owned them. Once I took ownership of them, I could then add my user to the permissions list, and get into them. (I have to do this for every profile and subfolder in there.)
I have a user's My Documents folder redirected to a share on our domain controller. The name of this user's My Documents folder is username's Documents. Whenever I try to change this to My Documents, it immediately reverts back to username's Documents.However, if I open a command window and say dir, I see My Documents which is what I would expect.

I have a drive (D:) that I am trying to delete remnants of a corrupted OS (XP Prof) and am having a difficult time trying to eliminate 3 folders: a) My Documents; b) Recycler;c) System volume information. When I open my documents, it assigns all my text files to open in Word Pad. I would like it to open assinging all my files as Microsoft Word files. How can I change this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using a Dell D610 laptop, Windows XP.I have a 40GB hard drive.I have several co-workers with the exact same machine.My Windows folder is over 21GB large and I am running low on hard drive space. My coworkers' Windows folders are all between 3 and 4GB. To my knowledge, I have not installed/downloaded anything different than my coworkers.I have checked the sizes of all the sub folders within the Windows folder, but none of them are unusual in size and they in no way add up to 21GB.I have also reduced my restore points and recycle bin size.There seems to be something invisible in the Windows folder taking up over 15GB of hard drive space.I contacted my corporate tech support team and they said get a bigger hard drive.That might give me more space, but it doesn't explain the 15GB of wasted hard drive!

While sometimes, not often, the pages will load quickly, they usually take at least 10-15 secs, normally pages drop quite fast 2-4 secs for most as a guesstimate.

When i went to folder options to try and change the icon for drives it somehow reset the setting for opening drives to find. I changed it to open with windows explorer for now so that i can open things but this doesnt help as they all open in new windows. Does anyone know how to reset this action to default? Is there a utility that exists that looks at the title of the window being opened, and opens it in the user-defined screen? Sometimes I have to click on the file a second time at which time I get a(not responding) message on the folder bar.If I open the same file by starting WordPro and selecting the same file from among recently opened files it opens almost instantly. Other types of files don't seem to be affected the system crashes when I right click on a folder to try and display properties.

The "Folder Views" will not retain "details" setting even though I constantly reset it to "details" and have that set as default in all folders through folder options. This does not happen on an old computer with a really old Windows XP installation. Set it at viwe "details" years ago and it has stayed set. Any ideas on something else to get this to stay as I reset it?

My folder setting (Open each folder in the same window) doesn't seem to work anymore. No matter how often I make the setting, clicking on a sub-folder opens that sub-folder in a new window. If I go back to the Folder Options window, it shows that the same window option has been chosen. I have no idea what I might have done to cause the changed behavior. And yes, in the View tab of Folder Options, I did choose Apply to all Folders.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satellite with a Celeron M, 1.4Ghz, 1.5Gb RAM, and XP Home. In the past few days, it has slowed down to a crawl. Programs like Sound Forge that opened almost instantly now take a minute or more. I ran a complete virus scan and found nothing. System Restore won't work - even in Safe Mode. It's like everything is in slow motion. The CPU is active even when I'm doing nothing.
