Un Able To Open , Delete , Rename User Folder In My Documents

To begin with. My Hal.dl file ended up missing, so I got an error and had to reinstall windows, bla bla bla bla. i didn't lose all my data, and just reinstalled windows. I had to reinstall all my programs again, and everything went swell, untill I hit one problem. I had a ton of data (over 15 GB of pictures/music, etc) on my desktop. Since it was on my desktop, I now have my previous user folder in my documents, and I am un able to open it, delete it, rename it, etc. I know that the data is still there because when I check how much of my drive is taken up, it is obvious. I'm trying to rename or delete a folder but there is no options for the folder.Ok the problem I am having is I can't delete or rename the folder..... 'S Documents this folder is empty. I think I used a trick on u-tube to hide the name and I cant find iThe trick. This folder shows up as a My Document folder in dos. and says acesss denied. I had one machine that has gone out on loan during repairs and it now has several orphaned User folders under Documents & Settings, which did not have security set on them, have been emptied, but I would like to cleanup the mess. Logged in as Administrator and in safe mode I cannot delete these. I think this is one of those naming issues where the real name is not what's showing?? something like that. how do I ditch these I figure i might could slave it to a Win7 system, take over the files, then delete. that's a lotta work so if there's a quick way, that's better

when I booted my XP Pro system, my user profile admin) was corrupt and all my user settings were lost.Then I found that my documents were gone too.The files do not appear anywhere on my hard drive. no docs & settings folder has them. btw, no viruses found on my pc.When I use a undelete file utility, I can see the files at cdocuments & settings/temp, but windows explorer does not see this folder. Nor does explorer see any *.doc, *.xls, *.jpg, or any other file that I had saved in "My Documents" The file resoration free ware that I downloaded (to usb drive) does recover some files that have not been written over. I made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.
However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".
The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".
This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.
In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find
For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open
Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?

As of yesterday, I am no longer able to rename subfolders within the My Documents Folder. As suggested here I have tried right-click, and F2 but no luck. Ran Ad-Aware and SpyBot and system is free of spyware. The option is not available using the File menu. I know have been able to do this in the past using the above methods because I still see the folders I have created using right-click. When I select File>New, I can add a "new folder" but I cannot rename it. Any ideas and why is this happening all of sudden?

Well, not actually missing because you can find them if drill down enough: but in some user accounts the my documents folder ('User's Documents') is not immediately visible under 'my computer' whereas in some it is. I would like all users to have a view of their 'my documents' folder.Also, the administrator can see these folders, but sometimes they are called 'User's Documents' and sometimes, just 'User'!

XP Pro SP2, everything up to date. When I log on the Administrator account I can see the Shared Docs, Admins' Doc and all the other user's "My Documents" folders except for one user account which seems to be invisible for some reason. The user account in question is a member of the following groups: Users, Power Users, Debugger Users. How do I get this user account's "My Documents" folder to appear in explorer when logged on as Admin?

I have a spare drive where I keep all my music. When I open that folder and right click on a song to rename or delete the folder, it just shuts down and takes me right back to desktop.Normally when you right click on a song you get all kinds of options like scan with antivirus,create shortcut,rename,delete and so on.

I have 10 workstations on a network. We have a high turn around in employees. What I would like to do is just to rename the user profile for a new employee instead of creating a new account. I do know how to rename the user on the server. My issue is that even though I renamed the domain user account to a new user the old user name still shows on the workstation in the c: documents and settings and the new doc that are created show the old user as the author. How can I change this to show the new user?

Normally when you click on a folder or file in My Documents, and right click on that file or folder, you should get a list of options on what you want to do with that file/folder, including deleting it. However, I have a very stubborn file in my computer that will not delete. When I right click it, it does not give me the option to delete it. I can not remove, rename, or move the file. It won't do anything at all. Is there any way at all that I can delete or remove it

when I bought my Laptop,right at the beginning I dit a mistake,my keyboard was in arabic,then I could change to french/english.So in C/downloads and settings there are a vew folders,like :cookies,desktop,favorites,my documents,start menu,windows NTUSER and also a folder whiche I named by mystake at the beginning in arabig. Could anyone tell me how to change the name of a user account so thatthe folder in 'Documents and Settings' for that user changes also,aswell as any other system references to that user. The chimps at thecomputer store made the account name 'sihdigc', which is justridiculous. I've set everything up on this account and don't fancyhaving to make a new one, I'd just like to know how to change the username properly.

I have xp home edition sp2 on my computer. When I right click say on an icon on my desktop or rightclick on a picture in my documents to rename or run a scan or say delete it my short cut menu does not come up and the hour glass just sits there, then if it doesnt freeze up the icons disappear then they come back and I lose most of the items in my tray next to the clock.....Dr watson post mortem debugger pops up and the error program says.....dr watson has incountered error and will be closed by windows..you will need to restart program...an error log is being created.

One of my computers is a Compaq desktop running Windows XP Home SP2. The My Documents folder is located at C:Documents and SettingsCompaq_AdministratorMy Documents. I want to rename the Compaq_Administrator folder but when I try Windows tells me that it is a Windows system folder and that it can't be renamed.The reason that I want to rename it is that I just installed Network Magic to make it a little easier for my family to navigate the home network. When I share folders, they come up with the family friendly names that I had setup for each computer along with the folders that are shared. Folders such as Documents, Music, etc. The folders that are shared by the Compaq computer come up as Compaq_Administrator Documents, etc.That computer's name and user logon are family friendly to match the theme that I have used for all of my computers. Is there some way to rename that folder even though Windows doesn't seem to want me to?

Using XP SP2 and I can not move, rename or delete any folders.For example - I create a New Folder and try to rename it - it stays as New Folder. I try to move ANY folder and it does not move - stays where it is. Even when copying contents of a USB stick - folders will not move, be renamed or deleted. I CAN however, move files and rename and delete files - just not ANY folder!I can delete the folders from the command prompt though.

The rest of the message says "Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not in use".In Folder:Properties, the file shows as 'Read Only'. Unticking this box followed by the option to do the same for all folders and subfolders, then using 'Apply' was unsuccessful, as when I tried to rename the folder after doing this,the message reappeared, and the folder was again 'Read only'.As Administrator, my understanding is that I have full permissions under the Security section of Properties, which appears to be the case, as all boxes are ticked.The path is as follows:- C:FOLDER:Sub folder 1Sub..1 cannot be renamed. It contains four additional folders, (each with loads of subfolders),of which 3 can be renamed, whilst the fourth one cannot, with the same "Access denied..." message appearing.

I have a laptop running XP pro and whenever I try to rename, move or delete a file in explorer, DRWatson(kind soul that he is), pops up to tell me that he has encountered a problem and he needs to close. He then gives me the option to send an error report to microsoft. After sending numerous copies of these error reports to bill and not recieving anything in return, I thought it was about time I tried someone else. This is how I came upon this excellent site and after reading some of the posts, I am hopefull that there is a knowledgeable person on board who will be able to help me. The error report from DrWatson is below. If anyone can understand it and knows what the problem is, please let me know because at the moment I cannot do anything with my files or folders and it is driving me mad. The error report says:

All the 'My Documents' folders for all users display as 'My Documents' rather than '<User> Documents' in My Computer, so it is hard to distinguish between them. Is there anyway to change them so only the current user's are displayed as 'My Documents?

I have a user's My Documents folder redirected to a share on our domain controller. The name of this user's My Documents folder is username's Documents. Whenever I try to change this to My Documents, it immediately reverts back to username's Documents.However, if I open a command window and say dir, I see My Documents which is what I would expect.

Open Task Manager (Start - Run - taskmgr.exe) Go to processes tab and verify "msmsgs.exe" is not running. If it is click on the process and choose "End Process" Go into your Program Files folder. Rename the Messenger folder to "MessengerOFF" If you are unable to rename the folder in this manner then boot to safe mode and make the change.

To rename a group of files or folders in WinXP, open the explorer folder that contains the files and do the following:
(be careful not to include any critical windows system files or folders when applying this technique. back up with system restore first if you're not sure. also, it only makes sense to apply it to files of the same type.)
1. Highlight the files and/or folders to be renamed (remember to hold down the CTRL key to select non-adjacent files); or hold CTRL-A to select all the files and folders in a given folder
2. Let the mouse hover over the file that you wish to be the first in the series
