Unable To Delete Or Remove And Rename Files And Folders?
Jun 17, 2005
Using XP SP2 and I can not move, rename or delete any folders. For example - I create a New Folder and try to rename it - it stays as New Folder. I try to move ANY folder and it does not move - stays where it is. Even when copying contents of a USB stick - folders will not move, be renamed or deleted. I CAN however, move files and rename and delete files - just not ANY folder!I can delete the folders from the command prompt though.

To rename a group of files or folders in WinXP, open the explorer folder that contains the files and do the following:
(be careful not to include any critical windows system files or folders when applying this technique. back up with system restore first if you're not sure. also, it only makes sense to apply it to files of the same type.)
1. Highlight the files and/or folders to be renamed (remember to hold down the CTRL key to select non-adjacent files); or hold CTRL-A to select all the files and folders in a given folder
2. Let the mouse hover over the file that you wish to be the first in the series

Normally when you click on a folder or file in My Documents, and right click on that file or folder, you should get a list of options on what you want to do with that file/folder, including deleting it. However, I have a very stubborn file in my computer that will not delete. When I right click it, it does not give me the option to delete it. I can not remove, rename, or move the file. It won't do anything at all. Is there any way at all that I can delete or remove it

I have two machines on my home net and both run XP-Pro.Problem 1 is that I have something like 30k files in the recyclers on my D Drive that I can't delete.Problem 2 is that I recently did a restore from a backup and even though user names, admin access etc are same I can't access open or even delete many of the unused folders. I have tried moving them to shared files folder, and using my admin privilege to take ownership and or change attributes but nothing so far works. Safe boot, safeboot command prompt all nada.

As of yesterday, I am no longer able to rename subfolders within the My Documents Folder. As suggested here I have tried right-click, and F2 but no luck. Ran Ad-Aware and SpyBot and system is free of spyware. The option is not available using the File menu. I know have been able to do this in the past using the above methods because I still see the folders I have created using right-click. When I select File>New, I can add a "new folder" but I cannot rename it. Any ideas and why is this happening all of sudden?

I regularely use CCleaner to quickly remove junk from my computer. It empties the "Temporary Internet Files" folder and many temporary files but it does not empty the "Temp" folder in Windows XP (C:Documents and Settings(Account Name)Local SettingsTemp) or the "My Temp Files" folder within the "Temp" folder. I've noticed that videos I've watched online get stored in this folder as well as folders full of virus signatures downloaded before doing free online virus scans. Consequently this folder can quickly eat up valuable space on my laptops little hard drive.

I installed a game from MSN,but later uninstalled it using Control Panel>Uninstall Programs. However in my Program Files Folder there remains a folder called MSN Gaming Zone. It has a sub-folder called Windows which in turn has 22 files. The files are all .exe and .dlls.I can't for the life of me delete these folders or the files. If I delete the files they go to the recycle bin, but then 10-15 seconds later reappear back in the MSN Gaming ZoneWindows sub-folder. If I delete them again, they reappear, and there are now 44 files in the recycle folder. The system won't allow me to delete the folders, saying they are in use.I have administrator rights on a Dell Laptop running XP Pro.

Have an issue that I couldn't find a solution in Google or on these forums, so I am going to post. When deleting a file/folder from an WinXP desktop, typically it would go to the Recycle Bin, incase I need it for later. In this case, it isn't.its just deleting. Not ending up in the Recycle Bin, and no chance to recover.
Is there anyway to change so that they end up in the Recycle Bin first, before being deleted?

im trying to customize Windows XP Pro to my liking very strictly and for some reason i just cannot delete the History and Temporary Internet Files folder, i 100% do not want them there but if i try delete them it comes up with History is a Windows system folder and is required for Windows to run properly. It cannot be deleted.iv'e tried booting into Linux and deleting it off their but when i booted back into windows it replaced them again, i also logged in as the SYSTEM user and deleted them but to no avail. I seriously do not want them folders their, and to my knowledge they ARE NOT required for windows to run properly.

I had to reinstall all my programs again, and everything went swell, untill I hit one problem. I had a ton of data (over 15 GB of pictures/music, etc) on my desktop. Since it was on my desktop, I now have my previous user folder in my documents, and I am un able to open it, delete it, rename it, etc. I know that the data is still there because when I check how much of my drive is taken up, it is obvious. I have a laptop running XP pro and whenever I try to rename, move or delete a file in explorer, DRWatson(kind soul that he is), pops up to tell me that he has encountered a problem and he needs to close. He then gives me the option to send an error report to microsoft. After sending numerous copies of these error reports to bill and not recieving anything in return, I thought it was about time I tried someone else. This is how I came upon this excellent site and after reading some of the posts, I am hopefull that there is a knowledgeable person on board who will be able to help me. The error report from DrWatson is below. If anyone can understand it and knows what the problem is, please let me know because at the moment I cannot do anything with my files or folders and it is driving me mad. The error report says:
Application exception occurred:
App: C:WINDOWSexplorer.exe (pid=3268)
When: 01/02/2006 @ 23:13:06.340
Exception number: 80000007.................

I've been unable to delete a folder and subfolder that appeared out of nowhere in October of 2003. The folder is named C:502371470d48710f4f and contains a subfolder named sp2. The subfolder contains 0 files. Both folders are read-only. I go to Properties and uncheck the read-only attributes; however when I try to delete I then find that the attributes have returned to (grayed-out) read-only. Access, of course, is denied.

I've got a machine running Win XP Home SP 2. Ther is a folder containing files in the Program Files folder that I want to delete. When I attempt to delete any of them, either to the recycle bin not, I get an error "Access Denied - ...". I am the computer administrator. The only help I could find on Microsoft site tells me to have the administrator change my privileges or the permissions on the files. Well, since I am the administrator, it seems like I should be able to do it myself.

They all begin with CS, and have a time-stamp that coincides with bootup. Here is one:CS2F1A1E2B-3FE4-44EE-80E5-22C16FD91008.tmp I get an error message that the files are in use, but I can't figure out what is using them. I also tried to access them from Safe Mode command prompt. They don't show up there.

I recently reinstalled XP but I didn't format the hard drive during the process. My hard drive is now almost full because the files and folders were not deleted...and they are nowhere to be found. I vaguely remember an option somewhere to delete files from a previous installation in xp but I can't seem to find it anywhere.I even tried Googling it but can't find it. Does anyone know how I can get rid of these old files.

For this question, I have about 7217 files that each have strange filenames. For this, how can I rename all files at once, with each file with its own random name?(Preferably a random string of numbers.) How can I do this so I don't have to manually edit each file?

I've got a very specific task in mind: I'm creating a CD full of mp3's which will play on my portable cd player. BUT: for it to 'see' the mp3s, all the file names have to be preceded by 3 digit track numbers, i.e. 001, 002, NOT 1, 2, or 01, 02.
Rather than re-label 'em all by hand, I'd like to use the rename utility. The only problem is that the rename utility doesn't 'add' the zeroes in front, it 'overlays' the zeroes over the existing label, so I get a bunch of files all numbered '00'.

Open Task Manager (Start - Run - taskmgr.exe) Go to processes tab and verify "msmsgs.exe" is not running. If it is click on the process and choose "End Process" Go into your Program Files folder. Rename the Messenger folder to "MessengerOFF" If you are unable to rename the folder in this manner then boot to safe mode and make the change.
