Rename Or Run Scan Or Delete / Short Cut Menu Does Not Come Up
Apr 6, 2005
I have xp home edition sp2 on my computer. When I right click say on an icon on my desktop or rightclick on a picture in my documents to rename or run a scan or say delete it my short cut menu does not come up and the hour glass just sits there, then if it doesnt freeze up the icons disappear then they come back and I lose most of the items in my tray next to the clock.....Dr watson post mortem debugger pops up and the error program says.....dr watson has incountered error and will be closed by windows..you will need to restart program...an error log is being created.
Another error program has come up and says.explorer.exe generated error and will be closed by windows you need to restart program..an error log is being created.I get the send a report to microsoft... but i cant as my computer is now froze. I have asked alot of ppl about this but they have no clue and its driving me crazy...my uncle said just dont right click but its something I do on a regular basis I forget and this is what happens each and every time.....I have run a scan and my virus scan and defragged
When I restart the computer it POSTs fine (counts the memory, displays "the" table... etc). When It's about to start Windows it starts beeping. Continuous short beeps. The cursor just blinks on the screen and it beeps. When I press F8 to get to the boot menu, nothing happens. No boot menu appears.I did a repair install from my XP install CD - same thing happens, nothing has changed. I tried to restore MBR record through recovery console but again same thing, no change.
I'm trying to rename or delete a folder but there is no options for the folder.Ok the problem I am having is I can't delete or rename the folder..... 'S Documents this folder is empty. I think I used a trick on u-tube to hide the name and I cant find iThe trick. This folder shows up as a My Document folder in dos. and says acesss denied. It may be a duplicate or used in the same way. Posibly it a folder used by windows
I have a spare drive where I keep all my music. When I open that folder and right click on a song to rename or delete the folder, it just shuts down and takes me right back to desktop.Normally when you right click on a song you get all kinds of options like scan with antivirus, create shortcut, rename, delete and so on.
Normally when you click on a folder or file in My Documents, and right click on that file or folder, you should get a list of options on what you want to do with that file/folder, including deleting it. However, I have a very stubborn file in my computer that will not delete. When I right click it, it does not give me the option to delete it. I can not remove, rename, or move the file. It won't do anything at all. Is there any way at all that I can delete or remove it
To begin with. My Hal.dl file ended up missing, so I got an error and had to reinstall windows, bla bla bla bla. i didn't lose all my data, and just reinstalled windows. I had to reinstall all my programs again, and everything went swell, untill I hit one problem. I had a ton of data (over 15 GB of pictures/music, etc) on my desktop. Since it was on my desktop, I now have my previous user folder in my documents, and I am un able to open it, delete it, rename it, etc. I know that the data is still there because when I check how much of my drive is taken up, it is obvious. (22.2 GB DOES NOT just disapear
Using XP SP2 and I can not move, rename or delete any folders. For example - I create a New Folder and try to rename it - it stays as New Folder. I try to move ANY folder and it does not move - stays where it is. Even when copying contents of a USB stick - folders will not move, be renamed or deleted. I CAN however, move files and rename and delete files - just not ANY folder!I can delete the folders from the command prompt though.
I have a laptop running XP pro and whenever I try to rename, move or delete a file in explorer, DRWatson(kind soul that he is), pops up to tell me that he has encountered a problem and he needs to close. He then gives me the option to send an error report to microsoft. After sending numerous copies of these error reports to bill and not recieving anything in return, I thought it was about time I tried someone else. This is how I came upon this excellent site and after reading some of the posts, I am hopefull that there is a knowledgeable person on board who will be able to help me. The error report from DrWatson is below. If anyone can understand it and knows what the problem is, please let me know because at the moment I cannot do anything with my files or folders and it is driving me mad. The error report says:
To rename a group of files or folders in WinXP, open the explorer folder that contains the files and do the following: (be careful not to include any critical windows system files or folders when applying this technique. back up with system restore first if you're not sure. also, it only makes sense to apply it to files of the same type.) 1. Highlight the files and/or folders to be renamed (remember to hold down the CTRL key to select non-adjacent files); or hold CTRL-A to select all the files and folders in a given folder 2. Let the mouse hover over the file that you wish to be the first in the series
For some strange reason my Start Menu items/shortcuts have been deleted (in both my Documents & Settings folder and 'All Users'), except for a blank shortcut (no name, no link) with the 'My Computer' icon. The weird thing is the Start Menu folders and their contents are in tact.Initially I thought I accidentally deleted them so I manually created a few shortcuts back to some of programs, but after restarting Windows, they were gone again and only that mysterious blank shortcut appeared again!I did a full system scan with Norton AntiVirus 2007 and AVG Anti-Spyware and they didn't find anything.
I went to use PerfectDisc yesterday, it suggested I do a bootup scan, I did, allowed it to do pagefile scan too. Ran fine. Then rebooted, went to do regular scan. it locked up on the Blue Screen of Death.
"Bad_Pool_Header" and gave some error info... 0x00000019, and so on.
Computer runs fine though otherwise, which is funny.
Then when I try to go to Registry Mechanic and scan, it goes all the way through, and on I believe the deepscan, it always goes to BSOD there. I think while it's in the HKEY section of current user.
There may be other programs that will cause the BSOD, but these 2 are the only ones so far. Please guide me through this....Anyone.
I didn't find an existing thread to the topic, so i apologize if the question has already been answered. at one point in time i had a mahjongg game installed on my windows xp run pc. i placed a shortcut on the start menu (above the frequent programs list). somehow or other, the shortcut was not removed when i uninstalled the program. my attempts to get rid of it since then are as follows:
1. when i right click on the icon, and select "remove from this list", nothing happens. 2. i attempt to run the shortcut and it says "the item you selected is not available. it might have been moved, renamed, or removed. do you want to remove it from the list?" i select yes, and nothing happens. 3. i attempt to rename the shortcut and it says "cannot rename file: cannot read from the source file or disk." 4. i open the properties and there is a message in the target type field saying "this is not a valid shortcut". i cannot change any of the fields without getting the error message in #3. 5. reinstalling the game doesn't change anything. i get the same error messages as above. 6. i searched through the registry for anything named "mahjongg", and it doesn't turn anything up.
I am running XP-Pro SP2. Does anyone know how I can add an item to the context menu allowing me to delete bypassing recycle bin. I want the context menu item to give the same result as holding down the"SHIFT" key when pressing "DEL"
If it is possible, and how to do it, to delete the My Recent Documents which shows up in the Start menu in XP. If that cannot be done easily, is it possible to delete the entries that appear there.
I accidentally made a duplicate? startup folder? on my desktop from my start menu to the desktop. The copy on my desktop works the other (in the drop menu) does not. If you load a program in the start menu? startup folder? upon re-boot it will not start the selected program. My question is how do I delete the? startup?folder in my start menu? When I try it will not allow me to do so. This whole thing isn?t causing any problem. It?s just starting to grate on me.
How does one delete duplicate context-menu entries in XP?For example, if I right click on a .gif image file or .jpg image file, TWO "Preview"'s show up in the right context menu - one bolded, the other not. One opens with one application, the other with a different application.I have already attempted to go to Folder options, File Types, Advanced, and try and "find & fix" from thre, but never came across the dups.
I recently did a google search and when I entered one of the websites a prompt script download appeared, worried about what it was doing I unplugged the computer and rebooted. I started up IE and when I entered the search menu under the history toolbar the internet shortcut "what I searched" - google search could not be deleted I even ran a history cleaner and yet it was the only thing that remained in the history toolbar under the search menu.
My hard drive was formatted due to a virus and now when the computer is turned I get an empty file folder every time. I would like to know how to remove this and have it just go directly to my desktop.
Recently reinstalled Windows. When I did the restore it but back all of my desktop shortcuts and items that were on the Start/Programs menus even though many of them are no longer on the machine. Is there a program that will hunt for those "dead end" shortcuts and menu items & delete them?
Have Win2K/IE6...how do I delete unwanted menu items from the Right Click "Save Image As" menu? The number of items causes the menu box to be either top justified or bottom justified, depending on where the cursor is located when the right click button is used. I am therefore having to move the cursor all over the screen to chase the desired "save Image" command. Also, with IE6, several menu items have been added (over IE5)....but, I am NEVER going to "email picture", "print picture", nor "go to my pictures" from this menu box. I could delete 7 of these pesky items, if I knew how, thus making this a much more user friendly menu box.
i had Win xp sp2 on my hard-drive i installed windows 98 on my remove-able disk... after that i formatted my removeable disk now i just have Win xp but when start up it still shows the os choice menu. I just want to know can i delete that option of choosing win98 which doesn't exist. And so i can save 30 sec of booting time in case my pc reboots after an update or so when i am not around.
I am running Win XP on a HP laptop. When I boot up a program always tries to load but it is one that I don't have or have tried to load. It always asks for the disk which I do not have. It is not located in the start folder, so I do not know where to go to delete it.
I'm having a problem with my XP laptop. I've been hibernating my laptop daily for the past couple of years. Recently after waking up from every hibernation, the laptop gives the following error message:System restart has been paused:Continue with system restart.Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu. After that it boots into Windows, however i lose all of my open programs which is rather annoying. Does anyone know how to resolve this?
Just wondering if anyone know a good doc/list/page listing all the shortcut keys default built into Windows XP? I tried looking it up in help, but it only gave a couple and by no means was all of them
