My computer keeps rebooting every time i try to open folders with .avi and .mpeg files. It says that DEP is causing it but I disbabled it and I still can't open any folders, please give me any suggestions short of formatting the computer
The short cut sidebar is missing in windows XP. It's one that if you open my computer is normally on the left hand side and gives shortcuts to control panel and system tasks etc. How do I get this back?
After cloning one HD to another I noticed that the icons to many programs were not showing up. By that I mean the icon for say my PaintShop pro short cut was not showing up. When I manually try to set it that does not work either. A couple "registered" or unlocked programs had to be redone...in particular WinXp (home) was asking to re-register and song show plus wanted the unlock key again.
This is a minor annoyance, however after upgrading the MB, CPU and memory I ran Registry mechanic and it listed a ton of registry errors. In some cases, like the default icon for Paintshop pro it's looking for a C:/Windows/Installer folder that does not exist in either my new drive or the drive that was my source. I don't want to go ahead and fix all the errors, most of which now seem to be part of the missing icon issue I had to begin with. I might just end up having to reinstall the OS and all the other Apps we use for this projection system that doubles as our recording PC. My problem is that I just don't know how much of a problem these registry errors are going to be down the line. What got me thinking of scanning the registery was after the upgrade to the new MB I notice that on shut down the OS is hanging and won't complete the shut down.
I am having some difficulty formatting my hard drive that has XP loaded on it. I use to be able to do anything on my system that used Windows 98 but I'm lost trying to do anything on this system.
It's a shame that me did a grave error. I am in terrible shock for that I did the following:
a) Installed Sun Solaris Express x86 Developer Edition with a 7.5 GB partition. b) There is Windows XP SP2 on the first 20 GB partition.
I wanted to toggle boot flag by using DOS based fdisk after the Solaris installation. That's where me screwed up I ran a bootable Russian language DOS tools. Instead of toggling the boot flag (option 2 in the fdisk), me accidentally (while taking an overseas call) selected (option 1) the FAT formatting the existing NTFS partition (fdisk ran for 1%, then me immediately stopped and rebooted. But, already damage done My NTFS got screwed up by me.....
I'm tryin gto format my Hard drive and i'm running wins XP Pro OP sysem. i have tried to use the CD to format but there is no information on the CD to format XP. So having said this
I put in my new 4g SD micro I bought off ebay and try to add music to it, instead I get "the Disk in Drive F is not formated". So I try to format it and it says "windows was unable to complete the format"? I look at the "File system" and it show FAT. Now I have read that in order to get mp3's to play you must have it set to FAT32? I can't change the "File system" it has no other options in the drop down?
MY Operating System is XP Pro with C to G hard disk partitions.I formatted G drive for install second Operating System.C drive file system is NTFS.Other drives FAT32.Can I install second Operating System without formatting C drive.
i have a problem with my windows system.. it has been working highly slowly lately and i cant even run more than two programs on it .. i have windows Xp and i have norton systemworks.. i often use the antivirus.. i was talking with some friends and the fact that i might have a trojan came up. i would like to RESTART everything and boot up the original windows Xp. i have a startup flopy disk and i am not sure if this is needed to format the C drive..
Instead of re-formatting and losing tons of items I haven't backed up I recently performed a system recovery (The F10 command that doesn't destroy your data). Now I have a clean windows setup and can see that the C drive is still more than half full but I have no clue how to get to my data.
Just wondering if anyone know a good doc/list/page listing all the shortcut keys default built into Windows XP? I tried looking it up in help, but it only gave a couple and by no means was all of them
I've surfed the forums but none of the problems seemed to hit on exactaly what i have.1st problem is that startup and shutdown each take about half and hour to go through (if at all).2nd Is the most reliable method of making the problem happen....loading a new webpage (like one I have never been to) this is when the computer seems to freeze, but not all the way, I still have perfect control of the mouse, and the clicks still go through but only after it seems to catch itself....And other times it doesnt take any provication to make it do this.3rd If this counts is that whenever it does this lockup thing, a small noise comes from the computer, like almost a beep, but not from any speakers, cant really explain it (its not from the case speaker either) Remindes me of a hard drive noise....kinda, but not normal HD.
The short cuts on my HDD work when using the desktop to get through them, but upon opening any sort of Explorer dialog it does not see see the short cuts at all. Previously, when the problem first started, it(the Explorer dialog) would see them as a ".lnk" rather than treating them as a short cut, and taking me to the place specified. So, were I attaching a picture to an email, if said picture was in a folder that a short cut could lead me to, it would simply attach a "*.lnk" to the email rather than taking me to the folder where the pic resides.
I downloaded regcleaner2 to clean my registry and somewhere down the line I screwed up. Now I cannot use any of the short cut icons and I need to access my Outlook Express.
I have tried to place a short cut in the startup folder so as to make sure that PGP-tray is run on startup. However, when I drop the shortcut in the folder I cannot se any change. Furthermore, when I restart the pc PGP-tray is not initiated.
Many thanks for your very helpful forum-I have learned a lot by reading the comments.I have already downloaded Ewido,Adaware and run them to clear out spyware, adware and odd bits of Trojans that were not totally cleared before. Now when I run the two programs all I get are tracking cookies.Still my computer locks up for a minute or so at times, especially when I click on a new window. For a while I put it down to the amount of programs etc I had on my computer. However after clearing out some thing like 245k of programs, junketc etc,the computer still hangs for a while.I have installed more ram memory and run Xram pro to give me back more ram when I run short as some of the windows programs seem to eat up myram especially iexplorer and the longer I run my pc the more it uses.{I knowwindows will give me extra memory when things are critical, but I often needa boost in ram when I am running a webconferencing program].
Every program that i use, eventually ends up FREEZING, not the comp, THE PROGRAM.. I can do teh alt+crtl+del but sometimes im workin on something that i didnt save..for example..Im running Photoshop cs....i make something cool, then the program jsut stops responding...so i either wait for it to come back or end its task..but the I WOULD LOSE MY WORK!..(remember this is just an example)EVERY PROGRAM THAT IS RUNNING FREEZES TOGETHER ALMOST ALL THE TIME!!! for about 3-4mins...then they come back on
I have xp home edition sp2 on my computer. When I right click say on an icon on my desktop or rightclick on a picture in my documents to rename or run a scan or say delete it my short cut menu does not come up and the hour glass just sits there, then if it doesnt freeze up the icons disappear then they come back and I lose most of the items in my tray next to the clock.....Dr watson post mortem debugger pops up and the error program says.....dr watson has incountered error and will be closed by windows..you will need to restart program...an error log is being created.
Another error program has come up and says.explorer.exe generated error and will be closed by windows you need to restart program..an error log is being created.I get the send a report to microsoft... but i cant as my computer is now froze. I have asked alot of ppl about this but they have no clue and its driving me crazy...my uncle said just dont right click but its something I do on a regular basis I forget and this is what happens each and every time.....I have run a scan and my virus scan and defragged
In the past I've had problems with Internet Explorer closing abruptly after a couple minutes of having it open, I solved that problem by downloading Mozilla Firefox. But now I bought and installed WebEasy6 and after a few minutes of opening the program it abruptly closes and I lose my work. I have AOL Safety and Security Center and it tells me there is no known viruses or adware/spyware.
I'm looking for a way to create short cuts in XP for addding text or passwords. For example when logging into Yahoo or somewhere else i would like to hit Alt+P for pauljwest . Does anyone know a way to do this.
When I try to download a short video or the supposid missing file I get this message. C:DOCUME/`1OWNERLOCALS~1TEMPqrorw03.exe be as source file could not be read. I guess I really haven't the faintest idea what this is all about. I have to assume that I have a file missing.
The video I just made is 3 minutes 6 seconds long. When I save it (did this five differen't times) it ends at 2 minutes and 14 seconds? Why on earth? How do I fix this problem? This hasn't happened before. This is only my second video on movie maker, but the first time it worked perfectly. What's going on?
I just bought a rebuilt computer and already I have had the computer lock up and prevent my keyboard or mouse from operating at some point in the session. I am just about ready to take this to another computer repair shop and tell them to go through the system with a fine tooth comb and fix all the remnant problems. To make matters worse I cannot get the computer to boot if there is anything connected to the USB ports. Here is a look at my computer's profile from running Belarc Advisor.
When I restart the computer it POSTs fine (counts the memory, displays "the" table... etc). When It's about to start Windows it starts beeping. Continuous short beeps. The cursor just blinks on the screen and it beeps. When I press F8 to get to the boot menu, nothing happens. No boot menu appears.I did a repair install from my XP install CD - same thing happens, nothing has changed. I tried to restore MBR record through recovery console but again same thing, no change.
I have had Windows XP for about five years. In the last six months my MS Works history gets deleted after a short period of time and I can't find any files that they would have been moved to. I have heard that this may have been caused by downloading an 'update' to MS Works. My other problem (which may be related) is that I cannot download the Microsoft service pack. It gets about 3/4 of the way through downloading updates and then shuts down because of 'registration errors'.
I believe I may have deleted something that is causing this.
Recently my video card died, and so my system went kaput. Originally I had thought it might be a driver problem so I uninstalled all Nvidia drivers from my system - including by accident my motherboard chipset drivers (I have an Asus A8N-SLI).Now when I try to boot with a new video card swapped in I get an endless reboot cycle. I disabled automatic rebooting and I got a blue screen with STOP 0x0000007B. I do have a clean installation of windows on another partition that I keep around for troubleshooting, and that works fine.Is there any way to save my current installation short of a complete reinstall?
Right, everything else works just fine on this computer, including loads of games, new and old, programs systerm etc.I have had problems with the Raptor drive but have had a replacement sent and installed ok I'm trying to run Need For Speed : Most Wanted : Black Edition.I can play just fine for anything from 15 minutes to 1 1/2 hours then the sound loops, the display goes blank and the PC shuts off.I have re-installed windows, defragged the drives (took days), re-installed drivers, swapped hardware, played in 2000, 98, NT modes, turned off SLI (turned it back on again) just about everything i can think of.I have loads of other games but it's really frustrating me that i can't play this without it crashing the system.
I have put a DVD write drive in a dell computer now I am getting 3 short beeps when I try to boot up and it does not boot up. But if I leave it off for a few minutes it does boot up and works normal. I did put another memory stick in but it was beeping before this. Could it be anything to do with the power supply atx psu 250? I am not on it at the moment I dont know what type of bios it has. I have checked the two drives both seem ok when singly attached I did not need to but I have checked the memory 1 stick at a time seems ok. the other drive is a dvd rom plays but wont burn. Could it be a faulty EIDE cable I got a new one with the new drive but I did not use it.
When starting the computer from total power down, the computer (Dell dimension 8300) works fine. However when the computer has been left idle for short periods of say 1 hour or more, the the system hangs. All programs and internet/LAN access lock up which requires a full hard boot to enable restart and program access.
