The short cut sidebar is missing in windows XP. It's one that if you open my computer is normally on the left hand side and gives shortcuts to control panel and system tasks etc. How do I get this back?

There was not a Windows XP CD-Rom included in box with the computer. It says for repairs to insert the Windows XP CD-Rom. How does she get one sent to her from the manufacturer or from V2 Premier?

I have 9 folders and a few tiny files on C: and very few programs installed.If I add the sizes of 9 folders (Windows-3.09 GB Program files-1GB) I only get about 5GB.What or where might the other 4 GB be?

When I try to start it up normally, I get the following message; "Windows could not start because the following fileis missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair" When I try this, it opens repair console, but then I have to select OS, and when I do this, it just comes up with the previous error. If I try to reinstall it comes up with a blue screen error and crashes.

View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter cloning one HD to another I noticed that the icons to many programs were not showing up. By that I mean the icon for say my PaintShop pro short cut was not showing up. When I manually try to set it that does not work either. A couple "registered" or unlocked programs had to be redone...in particular WinXp (home) was asking to re-register and song show plus wanted the unlock key again.
This is a minor annoyance, however after upgrading the MB, CPU and memory I ran Registry mechanic and it listed a ton of registry errors. In some cases, like the default icon for Paintshop pro it's looking for a C:/Windows/Installer folder that does not exist in either my new drive or the drive that was my source. I don't want to go ahead and fix all the errors, most of which now seem to be part of the missing icon issue I had to begin with. I might just end up having to reinstall the OS and all the other Apps we use for this projection system that doubles as our recording PC. My problem is that I just don't know how much of a problem these registry errors are going to be down the line. What got me thinking of scanning the registery was after the upgrade to the new MB I notice that on shut down the OS is hanging and won't complete the shut down.

Whenever I plug in the USB drive I have to click on Tools -> Folder Options and uncheck the box "Hide protected operating system files" on the View tab, or I can not see the folder.How do I set it as a non "operating system" folder? On the properties tab of the folder, the hidden attribute is ticked and greyed out so I can not untick it.

It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
Some time ago I booted up my computer,to find that my XP switched to Windows classic style,I didn't take it seriously so I went to properties to change when I get an error message saying there is a problem with run32.dll,not only that,but the visual styles can't load I assume,becuase of run32.dll,so now I'm stuck with the piece of s*** style.

Several new programs are installed, including Firefox, Winamp, desktop publishing, photo manager, and security software (not the antivirus, standalone scanners.) Everything appears to be fine.I log on to Windows Live OneCare to use their "Safety Scanner" to, as they say, check for PC health issues and optimize performance. Mind you, the site recommends users log on once a month for the full service scan. As you know, the scan includes the removal of what it refers to as invalid registry entries. "Oh boy," right? The registry. Except you'd like to believe the official Microsoft site won't screw up your programs.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI tried to do a System Recovery today on my Sony laptop. Got 41% completed and had a fatal error. Options given were Ignore, Retry or Abort. Attempted a Retry. Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.
Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've surfed the forums but none of the problems seemed to hit on exactaly what i have.1st problem is that startup and shutdown each take about half and hour to go through (if at all).2nd Is the most reliable method of making the problem happen....loading a new webpage (like one I have never been to) this is when the computer seems to freeze, but not all the way, I still have perfect control of the mouse, and the clicks still go through but only after it seems to catch itself....And other times it doesnt take any provication to make it do this.3rd If this counts is that whenever it does this lockup thing, a small noise comes from the computer, like almost a beep, but not from any speakers, cant really explain it (its not from the case speaker either) Remindes me of a hard drive noise....kinda, but not normal HD.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe short cuts on my HDD work when using the desktop to get through them, but upon opening any sort of Explorer dialog it does not see see the short cuts at all. Previously, when the problem first started, it(the Explorer dialog) would see them as a ".lnk" rather than treating them as a short cut, and taking me to the place specified. So, were I attaching a picture to an email, if said picture was in a folder that a short cut could lead me to, it would simply attach a "*.lnk" to the email rather than taking me to the folder where the pic resides.
