I just bought a rebuilt computer and already I have had the computer lock up and prevent my keyboard or mouse from operating at some point in the session. I am just about ready to take this to another computer repair shop and tell them to go through the system with a fine tooth comb and fix all the remnant problems. To make matters worse I cannot get the computer to boot if there is anything connected to the USB ports. Here is a look at my computer's profile from running Belarc Advisor.
I have had Windows XP for about five years. In the last six months my MS Works history gets deleted after a short period of time and I can't find any files that they would have been moved to. I have heard that this may have been caused by downloading an 'update' to MS Works. My other problem (which may be related) is that I cannot download the Microsoft service pack. It gets about 3/4 of the way through downloading updates and then shuts down because of 'registration errors'.
I believe I may have deleted something that is causing this.
When starting the computer from total power down, the computer (Dell dimension 8300) works fine. However when the computer has been left idle for short periods of say 1 hour or more, the the system hangs. All programs and internet/LAN access lock up which requires a full hard boot to enable restart and program access.
After a period of time my computer will turn itself back on. This is after I have completely shut the systems down. I have never found if there is a fixed time period that this happens. What I mean is I don't know if it happens after two, three, four hours. All I know is that when I get up in the morning the computer is back on.
I lose internet connectivity after a variable period of time of being logged into my computer. I can actually ping and do tracerts to verify that I can "see" the internet. But, my any other methods of accessing the internet do not work! I can't surf using a web-browser, my IM clients do not work, and I can't play any of the online games. I can still share files with computers on my local network.
In the past I've had problems with Internet Explorer closing abruptly after a couple minutes of having it open, I solved that problem by downloading Mozilla Firefox. But now I bought and installed WebEasy6 and after a few minutes of opening the program it abruptly closes and I lose my work. I have AOL Safety and Security Center and it tells me there is no known viruses or adware/spyware.
Right, everything else works just fine on this computer, including loads of games, new and old, programs systerm etc.I have had problems with the Raptor drive but have had a replacement sent and installed ok I'm trying to run Need For Speed : Most Wanted : Black Edition.I can play just fine for anything from 15 minutes to 1 1/2 hours then the sound loops, the display goes blank and the PC shuts off.I have re-installed windows, defragged the drives (took days), re-installed drivers, swapped hardware, played in 2000, 98, NT modes, turned off SLI (turned it back on again) just about everything i can think of.I have loads of other games but it's really frustrating me that i can't play this without it crashing the system.
Trying to go into msconfig and it is acting strange. I click start, run, msconfig, ok. The msconfig screen opens but as soon as I move my mouse the entire box just leaves the screen. Regedit is doing the same thing. Cannot find any information on this in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
When i turn it on I get the 'Windows did not restart properly screen'and no matter which of the options I choose, i see the windows logo loading after a short time the blue screen apears for a split second and then its back to the first screen all over again.
iv gone into BIOS, i ran the HD self test, and both the short and long test fail before really even doing anything.
I normally leave my notebook on all day and shut down at night, recently it has started locking up everytime it is left for 5 mins and i have to remove the battery to shut it down, nothing else will work Not a lot to go off but to be honest i can't say much else,
Many thanks for your very helpful forum-I have learned a lot by reading the comments.I have already downloaded Ewido,Adaware and run them to clear out spyware, adware and odd bits of Trojans that were not totally cleared before. Now when I run the two programs all I get are tracking cookies.Still my computer locks up for a minute or so at times, especially when I click on a new window. For a while I put it down to the amount of programs etc I had on my computer. However after clearing out some thing like 245k of programs, junketc etc,the computer still hangs for a while.I have installed more ram memory and run Xram pro to give me back more ram when I run short as some of the windows programs seem to eat up myram especially iexplorer and the longer I run my pc the more it uses.{I knowwindows will give me extra memory when things are critical, but I often needa boost in ram when I am running a webconferencing program].
I have put a DVD write drive in a dell computer now I am getting 3 short beeps when I try to boot up and it does not boot up. But if I leave it off for a few minutes it does boot up and works normal. I did put another memory stick in but it was beeping before this. Could it be anything to do with the power supply atx psu 250? I am not on it at the moment I dont know what type of bios it has. I have checked the two drives both seem ok when singly attached I did not need to but I have checked the memory 1 stick at a time seems ok. the other drive is a dvd rom plays but wont burn. Could it be a faulty EIDE cable I got a new one with the new drive but I did not use it.
I'm having problems with computer freezing when I multi task. Hitting the ctrl alt delete will bring it back. I have a compaq 64 bit with 512 mb. This only seems to happen when I'm using internet explorer.Could it be a bad ethernet causing lockups?
My printer locks upp my entire WinXp pro when telling it to print something out. There's nothing wrong with the printer itself or the cables attached to it, a've checked on another comp. Also tried to reinstall the LPT1 port and the drivers several times without no success. Even checked so that there's no other software that interferes with the printer drivers. and did run a virus check, both in Win and in pure DOS-mode, nothing. Starting to suspect that the LPTport on my Mobo- ASUS P4P800E Deluxe is screwed. The setting in BIOS is set to ECP as default and can't be manipulated.
I just build a new pc and I'm trying to install windows xp, but it locks up at the first screen and the num locks goes off where it asks you if you want to repair, new copy, or exit setup. I did a thorough get of the hard drive and it finds no bad sectors. Any clue as to what might be causing this? Also I tried installing windows 98. I can install most of windows 98, but the computer locks up when trying to load 98. Not sure where to go from here.

My computer freezes or locks up when I attempt to download a large file or burn a large file to CD..It seems to start out OK then, after a while, it slows down then flat freezes. No error message. It freezes even if I use a download manager or the Windows Download program or I try to burn a music CD with either Windows Media Player or Easy CD Creator. It doesn't seem to be program sensitive.I've ran several anti virus programs and spyware programs, checked my RAM, deleated cookies and temp files, Deleated most of my start up programs, deactivated my firewall and antivirus software. No change
I bought new HP pavilion A6040N running Vista Home Premium. It randomly locked up or rebooted and I hated Vista so I installed a new copy of XP Pro. Everything has been running like a champ and all of the sudden it's doing it again. I have swapped ram, checked the CPU temps and had the PS tested and everything seems to be okay but It still happens from time to time and it can happen when you are just surfing the net or it can happen when burning a DVD or something
I have a Compaq laptop with windows XP about 5+ years old. Windows locked up a week ago so I had to cold stop the computer. After I restarted it, it did it again. I'm unable to remove any programs because the screen goes black and it freezes. I went to microsoft to check for up dates and it recommended an update. I can't install the update because it freezes and locks up, screen goes black so I the only option I have is to shut it down and try again. I've also noticed that if I leave it setting for a while, it normally goes into sleep mode.
I have Dell 8250 that is several years old with XP Professional and all of a sudden my computer will not go into stand by mode without freezing up. I have to reset the computer to get it to boot up again.
I have XP with SP2, my computer freezes up after about 15 minutes being idle and I can only get it going again by resetting it.I have run diagnostic programs but there doesn't appear to be any errors.
My computer locks on shutting down please wait. It stays on that screen. I have to hold in the power button to turn it off. The only thing I did was update video drivers from nvidia and install farcry2.
I recently started using a software to convert some of my AAC songs to MP3. Unfortunately, it also created some folders with '.'(period) at the end... which, technically it should have tried to do since it was the album name regardless, now i get an error message I try to access, delete, or rename the folder that basically states that the folder doesn't exist.Does anyone know if there is a way i can force change/delete the folder since it's currently acting as a bad sector on my hard drive?
My girlfriend has a dell computer, that came pre-installed with XP. We had to reformat it and reinstall XP with whatever disk comes with the dell. She recently restarted her computer and it says that the 30 day grace period is over and she will have to put in the product key to activate windows. She put the product key number we had to put in when we reinstalled. (This number is on a sticker on the side of the dell) After inputing the number several times, it still says it will not work, and she can't get to her desktop anymore without this 30 day grace period thing. I'm going over there saturday to take a look at it, but it seems like I can't avoid a call to microsoft.
Each time I turn on my computer and as it is boots up it will delay for a time with a line that reads something like Automatic IDE Configuration and then a message that my date and time are incorrect. The date goes back to Nov. 2003. Once I correct the date, time and year things seem to perform ok.
How do I speed up the boot up time? It seems like it takes forever for my pc to boot up. Plus how do I find out what programs are loading at start-up? I'm currently running winxp and connected by cable to the internet
i dont know where the reason could be, since i didn`t install any new programs or had virus problems. It just becomes slow, then I restart and sometimes it helps and sometimes doesn't.
Just wondering if anyone know a good doc/list/page listing all the shortcut keys default built into Windows XP? I tried looking it up in help, but it only gave a couple and by no means was all of them
My computer keeps rebooting every time i try to open folders with .avi and .mpeg files. It says that DEP is causing it but I disbabled it and I still can't open any folders, please give me any suggestions short of formatting the computer
I've surfed the forums but none of the problems seemed to hit on exactaly what i have.1st problem is that startup and shutdown each take about half and hour to go through (if at all).2nd Is the most reliable method of making the problem happen....loading a new webpage (like one I have never been to) this is when the computer seems to freeze, but not all the way, I still have perfect control of the mouse, and the clicks still go through but only after it seems to catch itself....And other times it doesnt take any provication to make it do this.3rd If this counts is that whenever it does this lockup thing, a small noise comes from the computer, like almost a beep, but not from any speakers, cant really explain it (its not from the case speaker either) Remindes me of a hard drive noise....kinda, but not normal HD.
