I have XP with SP2, my computer freezes up after about 15 minutes being idle and I can only get it going again by resetting it.I have run diagnostic programs but there doesn't appear to be any errors.

I started receiving windows notices saying that my computer was infected with spyware. I could tell that these were fake and started scanning my computer with avast anti-virus. It was acting weirdly and then I saw that a window popped up called "vista anti-virus" i then googled this and found that this was a fake anti-virus that would install more viruses on my computer. So, I panicked and manually shut down my computer with the power button and booted into safe mode.

Sometimes it will freeze for no reason, yesterday it froze twice (Once I was just on MSN and the internet. Looks normal, fans are running in the PC, but is it frozen. I have to shut it off and restart. Then it works fine until it randomly locks up again. I have not noted any particular program or site that is running, it seems just random. Using Foxfire and Thunderbird (latest Vers).
View 14 Replies View RelatedThe main problem: I try to open "My Computer" "Control Panel" "Search" that type of stuff from the start menu and it seems like my OS just completely freezes up, the start menu window just freezes and locks onto the background, desktop becomes inactive where I can not click any icons or anything, usualy this happens for a period of time then it just self terminates, screen goes blank to background desktop image for a couple secs then comes back (as if I had not tried to open whatever I had tried to)

In the last 6 months, the cursor started to freeze (not respond to mouse movement) and I had no keyboard or mouse control over XP. I have to hard reboot to regain control of the mouse and keyboard in XP. View 1 Replies View Relatedi am trying to install windows xp service pack 3. but the windows on that kept freezing at the same point, every time it loaded to a state where i couldnt even move the mouse, was working perfectly fine before. i inserted the windows xp sp3 disk, and formatted the hard drive to ntfs (quick) and then the files started to copy, once that was done, it restarted and the actual installation part started. it went from 39 minutes down to 35 minutes and froze on the installing devices part. i thought it was a common error so i restarted the setup. this time it went to 34 minutes and froze. most of the times it would get stuck on 34/35 minutes and either froze or restarted the laptop for no reason. Only once, it went down to 23 minutes and froze. only 2 out of 30 tries went past the install devices section.

I suggested to do a disk-clean up, defrag, etc. first and she tried, but she said that the disk-clean up will just hang and if she tries anything else even to cancel it, the system will freeze up.Any ideas? Is it spyware? Or should she just do a whole reformat?
View 7 Replies View RelatedThis computer is an HP/2.8ghz/512ram/service pack 3 system. It use to run nice, now it boot's slow, slow, slow! It takes 10 minutes to get all the icons loaded, then it works ok. In addition to the slow boot, it also hangs at a black screen, I get around it by pressing F1, then it loads ok. Safe mode loads normally about 2 min.
View 10 Replies View RelatedEvery time I startup or restart my computer, my load takes around 20mins ! I have a Compaq Presario V2000. When I power or restart, the screen goes black, everything flashes, then the Compaq screen shows for about a second (guessing is the BIOS because it lets me hit F8 or whatever) but then after that it goes to a black screen with a status bar at the bottom. Slowly the status bar fills up. At around 20 minutes, which the bar is half way, then the computer flashes again and the XP logo shows and loads normally afterwards.
Im having no more problems with XP or anything else except that startup screen. People tell me its the BIOS, others tell me its not recognizing the Hard drive fast enough among other things. My BIOS boot order is basically CD first then HD. I have tried so many things with no success. And its getting to the point that I cant do anything when it comes to updating stuff without having to restart, which takes those 20mins.
My laptop freezes 9/10 when i choose shutdown and i have to force it by holding down the power button sometimes (4/10) it freezes when you leave it on its own for a while, usually when the screensaver kicked in it would ask for user to log on again..it was when bringing it out of screensaver it would do this - so i disabled the screensaver and now its not as often when it happens - its just if its been left for a while sometimes the screen will go black and freeze, it happened once or twice when logging off and other user goes to log on.. so t appears to be problem with the log on part of the setup

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy printer locks upp my entire WinXp pro when telling it to print something out.There's nothing wrong with the printer itself or the cables attached to it, a've checked on another comp. Also tried to reinstall the LPT1 port and the drivers several times without no success. Even checked so that there's no other software that interferes with the printer drivers. and did run a virus check, both in Win and in pure DOS-mode, nothing. Starting to suspect that the LPTport on my Mobo- ASUS P4P800E Deluxe is screwed.The setting in BIOS is set to ECP as default and can't be manipulated.

I did a thorough get of the hard drive and it finds no bad sectors. Any clue as to what might be causing this? Also I tried installing windows 98. I can install most of windows 98, but the computer locks up when trying to load 98. Not sure where to go from here.

My computer freezes or locks up when I attempt to download a large file or burn a large file to CD..It seems to start out OK then, after a while, it slows down then flat freezes. No error message. It freezes even if I use a download manager or the Windows Download program or I try to burn a music CD with either Windows Media Player or Easy CD Creator. Everything has been running like a champ and all of the sudden it's doing it again. I'm unable to remove any programs because the screen goes black and it freezes. I went to microsoft to check for up dates and it recommended an update. I can't install the update because it freezes and locks up, screen goes black so I the only option I have is to shut it down and try again. I've also noticed that if I leave it setting for a while, it normally goes into sleep mode.

The cd boots and the "Setup is loading files" goes through but then stalls at "Setup is starting windows". Waited for 2 hours just in case and still the same results.From what I can gather this points to a hardware problem. I have tried different ram modules and removed the battery but all to no avail.Could this be a processor or motherboard problem? I did everything the person above me did and then I took the hard drive out, reformatted it and tried installing XP SP2, Windows Home and the recovery cd supplied by HP. Every time it is gets to "Setup is Starting Windows" it freezes. I know the hard drive is working since I tested it in another computer. The reason I needed to reload XP is the notebook would load and get to the Windows XP loading screen and then freeze.It wouldn't boot in safe mode either.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI went out of town for 2 weeks, came home and my pc is acting really strange. I've been getting tons of pop-ups, to the point my computer freezes and i must restart. Not only that but it randomly reboots itself even when not being used. Also, when i go to delete files now, the file does NOT go into the recycle bin. I looked at the settings and there is no check mark next to the "do not move files into recycle bin". My BF said he had been downloading things so I figured maybe its a virus or something. I ran Nortons... nothing. Ran AVG... nothing. A friend told me it sounded like spyware so he told me to run Adaware & Spybot. Did that, found a ton of stuff. But when i retarted the pc, it wanted to start in "safe mode". I noticed that most of these pop ups are (search miracle ??) Found info that its a trojan, but i dont know. . I dont know what to do, totally computer illiterate.
