Jun 1, 2008Computer frequently "freezes" or "hangs". Every time I click on a link from e. mails, but also when on web sites (mostly craft). I do fragment and clean discs regularly.

Computer Freezes Very Frequently
Jul 1, 2008I have a problem with my computer freezing. I am using Windows XP SP3. The freezing occurs kind of randomly, sometimes after being on for a few days, sometimes after windows starts, but when it occurs, I have to push the power button on my computer to shut everything down. There is no error message, everything just stops.

Mar 5, 2007Some days it will run perfectly fine, but most of the time it's so slow, and freezes frequently. My comp is slow with programs (especially opening) and also on the internet. Aso, my processing light is always on, no flicker, just a solid light. I usually get frustrated and shut it down. I've ran a lot of anti-spyware, defrags, and disk cleanups. The disk cleanups used to allow it to run a lot faster, but now it doesn't help one bit. I'm thinking I'm just low on RAM,

May 29, 2006Windows Xp on my machine hangs frequently following heavy activity like running a game or simply when running normal programs like media player. I have a dual boot system with 98 on an other drive. The same thing happens there too. I ran a surface scan using Scandisk on 98 to see if there are any bad sectors on the hard drive, but the results turned up no errors. This problem has been recurring for the past few days. I dont know if this is a hardware or software problem, so bear with me if I posted in the wrong section.

Nov 7, 2009I have just tried to reinstall XP Professional on an Elite computer.
Initially all seemed to be going well I got as far as the desktop and an invitation to take the tour, which I declined and went straight to connect to the internet. At the same time I opened a previously prepared set of instructions for completing the wizard.
I noticed that the instructions would not scroll easily, moving in little jerks, but I carried on. About half way through the wizard the computer froze. Finding nothing on the keyboard or mouse that would work I switched off the power.

Apr 14, 2008My computer:Toshiba Satellite M35X-S32980GB Hard Drive 480MB RAM Windows XP About a week ago, my laptop started freezing up a few minutes after I turned it on. Couldn't do Control-Alt-Delete, just had to press down power button for 10 seconds. I managed to get it to stay on long enough to copy my important files--it never locked up while I was copying files onto a CD, but almost always locked up immediately after I ejected the CD. Sometimes it would restart on its own rather than freezing up. Twice I saw a blue screen flash with some text on it, but it was too quick for me to see what error messages it had. I noticed also that it started saying that it had found new hardware on my computer and tried to install it. The new hardware that it said it found was: VIA OHCI IEEE 1394 Host Controller.I searched some forums for possible causes, and saw that someone had a similar problem and that their computer worked when the CD/DVD drive was in use--I've found that works for me too. It works totally fine as long as I have a DVD in the drive playing or on pause.

Mar 27, 2006My computer reboots every time it reaches the welcome screen. Sometimes it actually gets into windows but not long enough to do anything. I have tried everything except of reformatting or trying to refresh the os as I don’t have my xp disc. I tried safe mode and tried safe mode with networking but same problem. I tried VGA mode people seemed to have thought might be a video thing still reboots. I tried to disable auto restart to see if I could get any type of error message but still reboots.

Aug 18, 2010i am trying to install windows xp service pack 3. but the windows on that kept freezing at the same point, every time it loaded to a state where i couldnt even move the mouse, was working perfectly fine before. i inserted the windows xp sp3 disk, and formatted the hard drive to ntfs (quick) and then the files started to copy, once that was done, it restarted and the actual installation part started. it went from 39 minutes down to 35 minutes and froze on the installing devices part. i thought it was a common error so i restarted the setup. this time it went to 34 minutes and froze. most of the times it would get stuck on 34/35 minutes and either froze or restarted the laptop for no reason. Only once, it went down to 23 minutes and froze. only 2 out of 30 tries went past the install devices section.

May 10, 2005My friend has a gateway computer, little more than a year old with Win XP on it and complains that the entire computer is moving too slow. I suggested to do a disk-clean up, defrag, etc. first and she tried, but she said that the disk-clean up will just hang and if she tries anything else even to cancel it, the system will freeze up.Any ideas? Is it spyware? Or should she just do a whole reformat?

Nov 23, 2007My laptop freezes 9/10 when i choose shutdown and i have to force it by holding down the power button sometimes (4/10) it freezes when you leave it on its own for a while, usually when the screensaver kicked in it would ask for user to log on again..it was when bringing it out of screensaver it would do this - so i disabled the screensaver and now its not as often when it happens - its just if its been left for a while sometimes the screen will go black and freeze, it happened once or twice when logging off and other user goes to log on.. so t appears to be problem with the log on part of the setup

Oct 5, 2009Im installing Win XP Pro (SP2) on a HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop. Everything runs fine until I start installing windows xp. The cd boots and the "Setup is loading files" goes through but then stalls at "Setup is starting windows". Waited for 2 hours just in case and still the same results.From what I can gather this points to a hardware problem. I have tried different ram modules and removed the battery but all to no avail.Could this be a processor or motherboard problem? I did everything the person above me did and then I took the hard drive out, reformatted it and tried installing XP SP2, Windows Home and the recovery cd supplied by HP. Every time it is gets to "Setup is Starting Windows" it freezes. I know the hard drive is working since I tested it in another computer. The reason I needed to reload XP is the notebook would load and get to the Windows XP loading screen and then freeze.It wouldn't boot in safe mode either.

Dec 2, 2004I went out of town for 2 weeks, came home and my pc is acting really strange. I've been getting tons of pop-ups, to the point my computer freezes and i must restart. Not only that but it randomly reboots itself even when not being used. Also, when i go to delete files now, the file does NOT go into the recycle bin. I looked at the settings and there is no check mark next to the "do not move files into recycle bin". My BF said he had been downloading things so I figured maybe its a virus or something. I ran Nortons... nothing. Ran AVG... nothing. A friend told me it sounded like spyware so he told me to run Adaware & Spybot. Did that, found a ton of stuff. But when i retarted the pc, it wanted to start in "safe mode". I noticed that most of these pop ups are (search miracle ??) Found info that its a trojan, but i dont know. . I dont know what to do, totally computer illiterate.

Dec 5, 2006I have a problem when shutting down the computer. About 4 out of 5 times when I select shutdown, the computer hangs on the blue screen and I must force it to shut down by holding the startup button. Then on the next startup, about half the time, the system goes through a check.I am using XP2. I was told by Circuit City that this could be caused by spyware. I brought it to them for a fix, among other problem I have Spy Sweeper installed but even after a scan, the problem persists. Then recommended a clean install of XP2 but I am trying to avoid that route. One thing I do notice is that I have a constant correction on the startup scan with many files in a Temp folder of Spy Sweeper that are invalid. The system corrects itself, but then it happens again. Just to note, this shutdown problem was occurring before Spy Sweeper was installed.

Aug 1, 2007I have a laptop that cannot find boot media device since it went into hibernate. I ran recovery console from Win 2000 disk and ran chkdsk but still no joy. Now I can't get into recovery console as it hangs up when it trys to log onto the WIN NT folder. If I boot as normal it just stays at the initial Windows logo screen.I can't get into dos as it wont log me into WIN NT when I select option 1 from recovery console. The freezing occurs randomly sometimes it occurs just after startup while other times i can play a game for a few hours before it freezes. Ive been in a repair shop a couple times and they havent solved the problem despite replacing the mother board and power supply. They also reformated the computer and still get the freezing problem. Also when it freezes i turn the power switch off on the back and then i get a noise from the speakers that sounds like someone tapping on a the desk. How can i discover the problem?

Jul 19, 2005Today, I found out that my computer hangs at the login screen. I boot up the computer as normal, and the login box is shown. I click into the password field (Note: I do not have the normal welcome screen, I have the Win2000 one.) and am ready to type my password. When I begin typing my password, nothing pops up. I attempt to move the mouse, but it is frozen where it last was. Sometimes it doesn't even move (The mouse) when I first boot it up. So seeing this as any problem, I go in Safe Mode. It's a sure bet that the mouse will move. Though it moves flawlessly, the password box is where the annoyance stays. I attempt to type my password, but then my computer hangs, AGAIN.I'm typing this from my brother's computer, and have yet to find the answer. I hear that this is some sort of password corruption and can be prevented by not having passwords on the account. I want to change this, but I can't login in the first place.
This I'm sure is not a virus. I scan for viruses every week (With Kaspersky), leave Ad-Aware, Giant Antispyware, and Zone Alarm on. I've used Google to search for answers, and yes I've found them being solved. They include the same problems, but they can get into Safe Mode, which in my case, I can't. I've tried Safe Mode 7 times and it doesn't work. (I can get in safe mode but the keyboard/mouse still hang)I didn't have time to backup files, and I have pictures that I haven't backed up onto CDs. People that have solved this problem have done it without reformatting, and I need a solution without reformatting.

Sep 7, 2005Really don't know where to post this, so forgive any inappropriate posting.I'm running Windows XP Home, SP2 all updates current.My problem is that my computer has just been freezing up and the screen going black for no reason I can figure. I've checked "sleep" and "hibernate" settings, and they all seem to be off. I've instructed the computer to NEVER go to sleep.At first, I had the problem which I thought may have been linked to my newly-purchased & registered version of AVG AntiVirus, but then I took everything out of System Start-up EXCEPT for that, changed the time for daily update and it seemed to fix things. Then the other day, I installed Kodak's Easy Share software for my new digital camera, and the problem started again. Suspecting the software,
I uninstalled that just this morning, and restarted the computer after the uninstall. After that, my mouse would no long choose just a single selection of anything no matter how much I clicked, it would choose multiple selections. So, I rebooted.Seems fine now BUT I am leary, and of course, I have to reinstall the camera software in order to be able to transfer the pictures.
Crashes And Hangs On Brand New Computer
Apr 13, 2006Recently have got a new comp with pretty good specs (xp media centre edition), and plenty of ram and memory. However I have noticied that now and again i will get a crash or a hang. Typically when i exit MSN messenger it will crash and stop responding. I have also noticed that sometimes my sound doesnt work. Then when i restart it will be fine again! I know this shouldnt be happeneing on a new comp but not sure how to solve this problem or even if this is in the right topic.
