This computer is an HP/2.8ghz/512ram/service pack 3 system. It use to run nice, now it boot's slow, slow, slow! It takes 10 minutes to get all the icons loaded, then it works ok. In addition to the slow boot, it also hangs at a black screen, I get around it by pressing F1, then it loads ok. Safe mode loads normally about 2 min.

Every time I startup or restart my computer, my load takes around 20mins ! I have a Compaq Presario V2000. When I power or restart, the screen goes black, everything flashes, then the Compaq screen shows for about a second (guessing is the BIOS because it lets me hit F8 or whatever) but then after that it goes to a black screen with a status bar at the bottom. Slowly the status bar fills up. At around 20 minutes, which the bar is half way, then the computer flashes again and the XP logo shows and loads normally afterwards.
Im having no more problems with XP or anything else except that startup screen. People tell me its the BIOS, others tell me its not recognizing the Hard drive fast enough among other things. My BIOS boot order is basically CD first then HD. I have tried so many things with no success. And its getting to the point that I cant do anything when it comes to updating stuff without having to restart, which takes those 20mins.
my HDD can't boot into XP by itself......it has to be booted from the CD-ROM with the XP CD which i hate..how can i make the hard drive boot in XP without booting from the CD-ROM or having to format, copy over setup files to the hard drive and re-install XP from the files on my hard drive and if i do that.will i be able to use XP after days y'know with the activation thing
View 4 Replies View RelatedBasically anytime my computer requires my login and password to get back to the desktop, after I hit <enter> it takes way over a minute to come back. I can hit <ctrl+alt+del>, then <k> to lock the screen, immediately try to log back in and it will take over a minute to show me my desktop again.I don't know where to begin to troubleshoot this. I also have Ubuntu installed on a separate partition and grub is the bootloader; however, I don't see how this could affect my WinXp install since Ubuntu is not running at the time.

I started receiving windows notices saying that my computer was infected with spyware. I could tell that these were fake and started scanning my computer with avast anti-virus. It was acting weirdly and then I saw that a window popped up called "vista anti-virus" i then googled this and found that this was a fake anti-virus that would install more viruses on my computer. So, I panicked and manually shut down my computer with the power button and booted into safe mode.

I try clicking icons, not clicking icons, but I still have to wait. *Also* The comp. doesn't sound as if it is loading...sometimes the hourglass cursor will appear, but the CPU never gets loud during this waiting time. I would like to not have to wait every time I get on my computer. Can anyone help? Please! This means I can't start the machine and walk away and have it up when I return. There is no password and a simple Enter is accepted. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this is changing my hardware acceleration. I was having problems with Microsoft Streets and Trips and their GPS and they told me to turn HA down. When I try to defrag C I get the message "Volume C has only 4% free space available for use by Disk Defragmenter...it requires at least 15%". I uninstalled some inessential programs and got it up to 9%. In my wifes user account there is one folder My Pictures with 2.9GB. Can I move that onto the D partion to create the needed space?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI was going to post this on the software forum, but since there seems to be no problem with the software (WinZip) I decided to place it in here.Everytime I attempt to open my 'Unzipped' folder in My Documents (the folder every file extracted from Zip files [using WinZip] goes to on my computer) it asks me to format my C: drive. I tried to format it, and I got this error: Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or any other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of this drive. Then try formatting again.I closed all my open windows and such and tried again. I still get the same error. I really don't want to format my disks to get into the Unzipped folder (which would be pointless anyway, since formatting erases all your files, and those are what I'm trying to get back) and nothing else seems to be working.
On mouseover Windows tells me the folder is empty, and when I view its properties it's 'read-only', no matter how many times I try and keep it from being so. I've tried deleting the folder (always getting the message that the directory is NOT empty), moving the folder into another folder, and uninstalling WinZip. NONE of this works, and I really want my files back. Is there any way you can help?

Yeah I have reformatted my hard drives a few times over the years so I am no stranger to it however I am just curious about something. When I go to reformat with my DELL Windows XP Home Edition CD I will then revert back to SP1. I have SP3 installed onto my computer right now. I also have a SP2 CD I got from Microsoft about 3 years ago or so. Should I first install the SP2 cd or is there no need to do that seeing SP3 should have all of SP2 updates in it?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI wrk for a company that has a server with Windows 2003. There are multiple 2000 and XP users who map drives from the server. Now here is where the problem begins. 2000 has no problms at all mapping drives. XP however has an issue with one folder. No matter what letter you pick, when you map the drive you get an error message "Setup requires a different version of windows. Check to make sure you are running setup on the Windows platform for which it is intended. Error 102" First of all im not running any type of setup. Im merely mapping a drive. This error occurs regardless of what drive letter you pick. And the really weird part, is once mapped the drive will open in Explorer or any other mode EXCEPT through My Computer and double clicking on the drive. If you right click the drive and hit open or explore, both will open the drive just fine. You double click and you get the error. When you right click the drive you also get an "autoplay" feature which makes no sense being its a folder on the server.
It acts like it has lost its association. Like if a JPG file is associated with nothing it wont open, but if you tell it to open with paint then it will. Its really weird and after weeks of searching i have found not a single similar problem to this one i can relate or get help from. It just plain makes no sense. I am going to unshare and reshare the folder when everyone leaves and see if that helps, but it works fine in 2000 currently and not in XP just in my computer.
I would like to set up a windows 2000 server or 2003 server with levels of permissions on file and printer sharing for the assigned users.
Does this require Active Directory?
I've only had this problem for the last month or so... during my bootup in winXP, after the blue welcome screen and its little jingle, the computer sits on by desktop background for over a minute before explorer.exe loads.
