This computer is an HP/2.8ghz/512ram/service pack 3 system. It use to run nice, now it boot's slow, slow, slow! It takes 10 minutes to get all the icons loaded, then it works ok. In addition to the slow boot, it also hangs at a black screen, I get around it by pressing F1, then it loads ok. Safe mode loads normally about 2 min.
this problem started out of the blue one day i turn on my laptop and everything is fine ... but once it gets to the "boot screen" (the one that has the windows logo and the loading bar) the thing turns slow and it stays on that screen for at least 5 minutes, after that, the whole windows startup takes another 5 minutes... to finally end up with a slow working computer. it's slow but it still works alright but once i try to open wmp or itunes to listen to music or even watch videos from Internet, the whole cpu usage goes to 100% and the song starts skipping and "lagging" and the computer works slower than usual.
Each time I turn on my computer and as it is boots up it will delay for a time with a line that reads something like Automatic IDE Configuration and then a message that my date and time are incorrect. The date goes back to Nov. 2003. Once I correct the date, time and year things seem to perform ok.
How do I speed up the boot up time? It seems like it takes forever for my pc to boot up. Plus how do I find out what programs are loading at start-up? I'm currently running winxp and connected by cable to the internet
I've been having performance problems in xp. It took longer than usual to start up, it took longer after clicking on the start menu, and it took longer for the start menu to load up. And even when the windows are closed, I sometimes hear the hard drive loading something and slows down the performance a bit. Can this be fixed (short of a reformat)?
when i try and start it up, it doesnt have video all the time. the computer starts as if it is alright, but there is no video. if i leave it off, and unplug it for a few minutes, it will start up and have video. but it will only start up after being left alone and off for a few minutes. and i am wondering if the video card is now glitched.
have a new laptop (~1 month old) and suddenly (in the past 3-4 days) logging on takes forever. it is setup with the Welcome screen where we just select which user to log on. after i click my user name and hit enter it takes at least 30 seconds for it to leave the Welcome screen and get to the desktop.
I bought a computer with XP Pro loaded. Recently discovered that the XP Pro is not "legal" so I went and bought XP Home (all I needed anyway). Loaded XP Home but now when the computer starts up I get the choice to either run XP Home in safe mode or XP Pro as before. Bascially I want to run with XP Home and discard XP Pro so that I am legal and can register for updates etc. Err, what should I do?
Almost everytime when iam starting my laptop, its running chkdsk(see attachment), which takes about 5-7 minutes.I recently removed bitdefender antivirus and installed AVG as the earlier one had slowed my system. Also, to clean the registry i download RegSupreme Software from macecraft, could it be the culprit?
A friend of mine got a newly built computer from a guy with a repair business. It takes over ten minutes to start up. HE tells thats normal. IT has 1.8 Ghz dualcore cpu, 2 GB RAM, Win XP pro, Norton and Acer logo flashes on the startup screen. I'm guessing some major hardware problems? Maybe something not compatible?

Every time I start my computer, the Cakewalk Pro Audio Setup appears, and says that Microsoft DirectShow 5 has been installed on my system. Then it needs to reboot to continue the installation. This is all fine except that after reboot it would show me the same prompt all over again. Is there any way to stop this from happening? (I don't want to install Cakewalk anymore). My OS is WinXP SP2.
I was recently turning my computer on and I got an error message that says "Windows Explorer encountered a problerm and needs to close." I shut the computer off and the message keeps coming on and I have no icons or startup menu bar just the wallpaper. I did a quick restore and still nothing, I still get the same error message and the same results.I checked the the problem on the error message; APP Name: Explorer.exe 6.02900.2180 Deskbar.dll In order for me to get on line or get my files is thru the Task Manager. I have done everything ran a virus scan, spybot, adware and everytime I turn on the computer on I get the same error message. I am stairring at a wallpaper with no icons or startup bar.
When I open Windows XP, the Windows Icon page comes up with a traveling bar on the bottom of the screen. This bar runs forty or fifty times before the computer actually brings up my desk screen. This seems to be an inordinate amount of time.
If your computer takes a long time to become useable after starting up or logging on, or you want a clean boot of Winodws XP try this,Click Start > Run > Type "msconfig" > On the Startup tab click Disable All and on the Services tab check the Hide All Microsoft Service box and then click Disable All. Click Restart and Windows XP will restart with only the system services and applications running resulting in a vey fast logon / startup.
My computer takes a long time to the stage where I can start to use it. I mean like 8 minutes or more, could it have to do with the programs that are started when the computer strarts if so how can I find the folder. I am using windows XP home edition I have a 40GB hard drive I only have used 6 gigs of it. I have 256MB of RAM. This problem is new it never took this long.
Operating System - Windows XP running on a HP Pavillion 761n - Missing dll files such as:mscvr80.dll and msvcp80.dll. Can't seem to find these files anywhere or I just don't know where to locate them.
Our family computer is running like a slug. It takes forever to startup and open programs and the hard drive activity light is always on. It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. I have another hard drive that is in a removable tray that I use, and that has all the same settings and everything, but that one is using a fraction of the RAM and runs pretty good!
I wiped my disc and reinstalled XP Pro. I can get on but it is irritating that the system pauses until I hit an Enter before it loads. This means I can't start the machine and walk away and have it up when I return. There is no password and a simple Enter is accepted. How can I get the system to come up without requiring this interaction on my part?
Anyone out there know if there is a way to make the old Q Basic program work with WIN 2K. If I have been informed correctly I believe Q Basic requires DOS to operate, and I have also been told WIN 2K does not have DOS capabilities. Is this correct?
I have a Dell and my keyboard is in pretty bad shape. Some keys are sticky and the key covers (not sure what they are called) are missing making it difficult to type. Are there refurbished ones that would work? Is changing out a keyboard a hard thing to do? Will a generic keyboard work or would it have to be a Dell?
my mom uses a program called quickbooks for her business, and just today it started acting up. nothing has changed or anything so i don't know what the deal is. but, when she opens quickbooks, an error message pops up that says it requires internet explorer 6.0 or higher, but quickbooks doesnt even NEED IE, and i have IE already..
I just started using Firefox last week and when I try to get to this group I get the following:"Warning: This page requires the use of scripts, which your browser does not currently allow."Out of close to 100 sites, this is the first occurrence of this error message.
After I change a setting or install an application that needs a restart, i click yes restart my computer now, and it'll shut down windows, show the bios screen, then when windows should boot, it just sits there, screen black and nothing changes for ever. If I hit the restart button, and let it get to the windows boot screen, it tells me windows shut down improperly and asks me how i want to boot, safe mode/last working config/regularly. I choose any of them and it starts up windows fine. What could be causing this?
computer is set to go into standby mode when I shut the lid, but lately when I reopen it (usually 10-15 minutes later) I just get a black screen and have to reboot. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this is changing my hardware acceleration. I was having problems with Microsoft Streets and Trips and their GPS and they told me to turn HA down. Not sure if this is the direct cause.
I was uninstalling an anti virus program the other day, and it told me to reboot the computer. Hitting restart, did nothing (in the program dialog) so I manually rebooted.Since then, I've tried to install Kaspersky, and Nero, and both tell me "A previous program requires a system reboot, please reboot". I have, multiple time. I can't get rid of this error. Is there some sort of registry entry for the specific program I was uninstalling that may be stuck?
IE7 has required 'customize your settings' at every bootup ever since I istalled it. I continue to get the following: http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx. I thought perhaps the problem might be fixed with this months release of revised IE7.
