Every time I start my computer, the Cakewalk Pro Audio Setup appears, and says that Microsoft DirectShow 5 has been installed on my system. Then it needs to reboot to continue the installation. This is all fine except that after reboot it would show me the same prompt all over again. Is there any way to stop this from happening? (I don't want to install Cakewalk anymore). My OS is WinXP SP2.
View 3 RepliesSeveral strange things happened after a lock-up and reboot. Defrag and System Restore will not longer work. Norton Internet security advanced protection turns off. I have also had a problem receintly when starting up where a box opens that says "DWRCST tray icon encountered a problem and must shut down". Also, I am able to log onto my IPS and some websites will open as they should and when clicking on others, a page opens that says Internet Explorer cannot open this page. This also happens when I try to open this website, so I must use another computer to get here.

View 3 Replies View RelatedRunning win 2000 pro SP4. every time i reboot, certain program settings are lost. for example, my zonealarm settings are lost, and all program net access authorizations have to be re-authorized, when the programs attempt to connect to the net. It will not remember the "always use this answer" option, that you can check in zonealarm to keep from having to continue to re-authorize the program each time it is run. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Checked my startup folder, nothing there either. Ran the MsConfig and can't find the problem there either. I even ran a full virus check and found nothing. This just started happening a few days ago. View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows XP professional and when I change my desktop icons (my computer, my documents, my network places, recycle bin full and & empty) they revert back to the default settings when I restart my system. This doesn't effect my wallpaper, start menu settings or personalized colors, only the icons. The file that I'm using is an *.ico file which I know works fine. (I've used this file when I was still using windows 98.) I've also tried making a "theme" with the saved settings and that doesn't seem to work either. I'm wondering if it's some simple setting that I'm over looking. Something stupid like "Restore default icons on restart"...I'd rather not edit my registry if I don't have to.

Whenever I attempt to boot windows XP from a tested and working HDD, I am given the screen with the option for safemode, regularboot, etc. After selecting a boot option, the PC will start the boot process, and then a few seconds reboot, without any error message. Insterestingly, I can boot just fine with the LiveCD into Linux.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had to store my PC for a couple of months due to some home renovation. Hooked it all back up yesterday, and it booted fine. Only thing out of the ordinary was a message "new hardware requires windows to restart". I figured it was my TV tuner, it's always been touchy after a complete power-down. I chose not to restart right then, and used the pc for an hour or so, then selected shut-down. It powered down, then re-booted on its own. No problem, the TV tuner causes this, I waited to get into Windows to turn the DVR function that I know causes this, but it refuses to boot! I get to the windows screen with the progress bar, and after about 15 seconds, the screen goes black and it reboots.

It had to do with a display driver I had installed.Since then I have a new machine that running without a hitch for a while now,and this time I do not have those display drivers installed . The problem started happening after I did a scan with malware bytes and super anti-spyware and after I cleaned what it found I got the BSOD on reboot.

It took longer than usual to start up, it took longer after clicking on the start menu, and it took longer for the start menu to load up. And even when the windows are closed, I sometimes hear the hard drive loading something and slows down the performance a bit. Can this be fixed (short of a reformat)?

Almost everytime when iam starting my laptop, its running chkdsk(see attachment), which takes about 5-7 minutes.I recently removed bitdefender antivirus and installed AVG as the earlier one had slowed my system. Also, to clean the registry i download RegSupreme Software from macecraft, could it be the culprit?

IT has 1.8 Ghz dualcore cpu, 2 GB RAM, Win XP pro, Norton and Acer logo flashes on the startup screen. I'm guessing some major hardware problems? Maybe something not compatible?

I was recently turning my computer on and I got an error message that says "Windows Explorer encountered a problerm and needs to close." I shut the computer off and the message keeps coming on and I have no icons or startup menu bar just the wallpaper.
I did a quick restore and still nothing, I still get the same error message and the same results.I checked the the problem on the error message; APP Name: Explorer.exe 6.02900.2180 Deskbar.dll In order for me to get on line or get my files is thru the Task Manager. I have done everything ran a virus scan, spybot, adware and everytime I turn on the computer on I get the same error message. I am stairring at a wallpaper with no icons or startup bar.
When I open Windows XP, the Windows Icon page comes up with a traveling bar on the bottom of the screen. This bar runs forty or fifty times before the computer actually brings up my desk screen. This seems to be an inordinate amount of time.

My computer takes a long time to the stage where I can start to use it. I mean like 8 minutes or more, could it have to do with the programs that are started when the computer strarts if so how can I find the folder. I am using windows XP home edition I have a 40GB hard drive I only have used 6 gigs of it. I have 256MB of RAM. This problem is new it never took this long.

It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. I have another hard drive that is in a removable tray that I use, and that has all the same settings and everything, but that one is using a fraction of the RAM and runs pretty good!
View 9 Replies View Related this problem started out of the blue one day i turn on my laptop and everything is fine ... but once it gets to the "boot screen" (the one that has the windows logo and the loading bar) the thing turns slow and it stays on that screen for at least 5 minutes, after that, the whole windows startup takes another 5 minutes... to finally end up with a slow working computer. it's slow but it still works alright but once i try to open wmp or itunes to listen to music or even watch videos from Internet, the whole cpu usage goes to 100% and the song starts skipping and "lagging" and the computer works slower than usual.
I am running XP pro with SP1a installed on it. I have a bought copy of XP Pro and i slip streamed SP 1a onto a cd to ease installation and that is what i use. When i run SFC on this machine it continously asks for my CD regardless of whether it is my original disc or my slipstreamed with sp1a disc.I dont understand why it will not acknowledge these cd's.

I have windows XP Pro and did something in the bluetooth settings that needed me to restart my computer. When I did it had a screen with guest 1 showing and asking for a password. I haven't ever put one on so now I am gutted as I don't know what to do. View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen my Toshiba laptop (p4 2.8, 768mb ram) boots up, the desktop background appears, but nothing else does for about 45 seconds. In the meantime, I can move my mouse freely and invoke taskmanager to start programs (File... new task). I'm pretty sure that this problem is not due to an excess of startup programs but instead due to some setting or manual time delay.
