No Applications Running Or Startup Items On Desktop / Force A Reboot?

Aug 6, 2010

This has happened two days in a row now. I log into my account, then when it gets to my desktop, all it shows is my desktop background picture. There are no applications running and there are no startup icons that I can click on. I have to force a restart on my laptop, and then when it starts up again everything is there.

Stops Loading My Desktop Items - Reboot

Aug 21, 2009

I've run across an unusual (to me) boot problem and it is frustrating. You'd think after more than 20 years of working with (and building my own) computers, I'd have seen just about everything, but this is a new one for me.I'm running XP with SP2 installed. I won't install SP3 because I've seen it cause too much trouble on other systems and won't subject mine (or myself) to that mess. I'm not a big Windows fan (and each new version leaves me less of a fan). I learned computers on a CPM system then promptly fell in love with DOS and still prefer it.

I developed a freeze problem about a week ago. When it continued on a daily basis, I started uninstalling software, starting with the most-recently installed. The freeze problem worsened. Eventually the system would begin to load XP, but in the process of loading my desktop items, it would reboot. Got caught in a vicious reboot cycle for a bit. Wouldn't even stabilize long enough for me to disable my desktop items and wouldn't allow me to boot to Safe Mode.Eventually, chkdsk would run (on startup) through steps 1 and 2. Step 3 would show "unspecified error", and XP would boot. Unsuccessfully.

Applications Running Behind The Desktop

Mar 19, 2007

setup the new 19' LCD, re-staged XP on the desktop machine. Setup a nice wide screen desktop, remember selecting something in the CP about don't show the icon's and the rest is history. Menu wise all is fine, window apps work fine, ex. start -> run -> notepad, yet a start -> run -> will show the black window open, then disappear. Same with taskmgr, if you do 2ce, you get the taskmgr is already running yet you don't see it, nothing near the time, <ctrl>-<alt>-<del> shows nothing. I can however do a start -> run -> edit <enter> and get the edit screen. Somewhere there must be a setting to just say, desktop, stay behind! Even created a new user, logged in as that new user (default desktop, etc.) with the same results.

Removed Older Applications - Reboot Cycle

Nov 1, 2007

It became very slow towards the evening and today I tried to restart it but it wouldn't reboot. It keeps going in the cycle from Windows starting up screen to Check disk screen and again back to black screen and rebooting.

Earlier today I was checking the C: and removing some of older applications which we are no longer using (via Ad/remove programs) and I have noticed that the C: and My documents looked strange. Lots of 'Found.???' files, lots of NFS(or something similar) files and for some reason number of pdf files (which originally belong to completely different folders).generally looked all re-organized and strange.

Startup Problem, Already Disabled All Unnecessary Startup Items...

May 8, 2010

My startup time went up drastically.
I have disabled all but two of the automatic startup items using msconfig. My system used to start in less than two minutes, easily. Now it takes a more than a minute or two longer than that.
I know what the problem is; the only three items that show in the system tray after startup are:
1) The AVG Antivirus icon .
2) The Spybot SD Resident icon.
3) Local Area Connection (This is the icon which shows two computer monitors with screens that light up and go dark periodically)

Now, after the problem started, the last item, the Local Area Connection icon is the one that doesn't load, for VERY long. So it may be something to do with that. Also, just before the icon finally shows up(after which point the computer is fine to use) I've notice that a Windows security notification icon appears...it flashes, for just a second, and then is replaced by the Local Area Connection icon. For the record, these are the two icons I'm talking about:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p282/sw1sh1/LAC.jpg
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...tification.jpg

I have had my automatic updates disabled for a while now, so you might think that that's the reason the notification is showing up but I've already disabled that notification using Windows Security Center.

Msconfig Keeps Opening After Startup, Having Disabled Startup Items

Jun 10, 2010

Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.

However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.

-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;

-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;

-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."

-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.

If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!

CPU Using 100% Resources With No Applications Running?

Sep 20, 2005

My computer is acting up.. right after i finish starting up, before I even launch an application, the cursor will show a flickering hour glass (like it's processing something), however nothing is running. And when I do try to launch an application (something as simple as IE) it takes forever to load. I clicked "control-alt-delete" to see my task bar -- it shows no tasks being performed, but on the performance tab it shows CPU at 100%. I thought maybe I had a virus, so I did a scan using Trend Micro PC-cillin, but no viruses were detected.

Main Pc Is Running XP / Started Locking Up While Using Different Applications

Jan 15, 2008

My main pc is running XP mostly, and has started locking up while using different applications. I have watched it with Task Manager and Process Explorer and I don't see anything out of the ordinary running. So far I have watched Ad-Aware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy, Nod32 and Sonicstage omg. lock up while in use. Is there some way to set up a log file that will tell me what is happening when XP locks up. I would like to have more info on the reason for the problem.I can reinstall but I would really like to understand what is going on. This has never happened to me before.

Launching Applications Locking Up At Every Startup?

Feb 11, 2007

I bought Vista since I figure I need to do a reformat and used this as an excuse to jump on the vista bandwagon, but here is my challenge with XP.This started about 2 weeks ago...when I launch Adobe Photoshop and go to open a file the program locks up and I can sometimes end the program and other times I need to reboot. I deleted and reinstalled the program and the same thing happened during the installation process. I downloaded a free picture editor (Faststone) and the same thing is happeneing. I also had lockups using the add/remove programs in control panel.

Running Slow / Added The Drivers And Just A Couple Of Applications

I completely reformatted my HD and reinstalled windows. I added the drivers and just a couple of aps. Now my computer is SO slow. Aps take a good 30 seconds to open as do web pages. There is the odd time where something will open quickly (seems random) but not too often. I ran Hijack this, spybot and adaware and found nothing nothing to find.

Computer Freezing While Running High-graphics Applications?

May 29, 2005

I'm running a newly built system and am having an issue when running graphics-intensive programs, specifically a full system freeze. I don't believe I was having this problem at first, as I didn't notice anything unusual with a graphics-intensive game (Guild Wars) when the system was first up and running. Now, though, I can't run graphics intensive tasks without the system freezing. I updated a whole host of drivers in between, so I can't pinpoint a change or two that might've done it. System restore is acting a bit odd, telling me it can't restore to X point and no changes were made (but unfortunately offers no additional info on why).

Duplicate Startup Items

Dec 5, 2006

Windows XP Home, SP2

In the startup folders of the start menu, if the items are in the user's startup folder, they don't start up. If the item is in the All Users startup folder, they open twice. This is evident as well when looking at startup items in msconfig. If the items are in the user's startup folders, they don't appear in msconfig, but when they are in the All Users folder, they appear twice, once as "Common Startup" and once as "Startup"

Can't Delete Msconfig Startup Items

Jan 18, 2008

In my WinXPSP2 In msconfig, I have several items ticked and several items unticked. These unticked items don't load at startup, but I'm guessing the system still spends time checking that they DON'T need to be loaded. The system takes long time to start up. (Dont need to check hijack this & viruses, we've been through all of that on here already).

Nomally, in the Windows Current Version registry key there is an entry "Run" for those items ticked to start up and a key "Run -" where the non-starting up items are listed. However I don't have the Run - key, therefore I can't delete these items.

I suspect that previously when there were some items I wished to delete, I might have deleted the whole key rather than the individual items in it.

I thought this key would automatically be regenerated - but obviously not.
Can anyone help me - I'm not sure whether it's Run- or Run - with a space - and should it be in the local machine set, the local user set or both? Do I just type it back in & will these unticked items then appear in it? Or would only newly unticked items appear in it? How else can I delete these items that are unticked in msconfig which I wish to remove?

Clean Up Startup Items In Msconfig

Aug 12, 2002

Do you ever uninstall programs and they are still listed under startup items in msconfig? Personally, I found myself with 30 such items from old installs. Microsoft leaves you no way to clean up this list, but have no fear, I have figured it out for you.1. Open MSconfig and click on the startup items tab2. Open Regedit and navigate to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Sharedtools/MSconfig3. Compare the list of registry keys under startupfolder and startupreg with their counterparts in msconfig.4. Delete the keys which are no longer valid.5. You've cleaned up msconfig. they always tell you to back up your registry before doing stuff so I suppose I should say the same, although I assume most of you are somewhat proficient in windows xp it never hurts to be safe.
