Main Pc Is Running XP / Started Locking Up While Using Different Applications
Jan 15, 2008
My main pc is running XP mostly, and has started locking up while using different applications. I have watched it with Task Manager and Process Explorer and I don't see anything out of the ordinary running. So far I have watched Ad-Aware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy, Nod32 and Sonicstage omg. lock up while in use. Is there some way to set up a log file that will tell me what is happening when XP locks up. I would like to have more info on the reason for the problem.I can reinstall but I would really like to understand what is going on. This has never happened to me before.
I bought Vista since I figure I need to do a reformat and used this as an excuse to jump on the vista bandwagon, but here is my challenge with XP.This started about 2 weeks ago...when I launch Adobe Photoshop and go to open a file the program locks up and I can sometimes end the program and other times I need to reboot. I deleted and reinstalled the program and the same thing happened during the installation process. I downloaded a free picture editor (Faststone) and the same thing is happeneing. I also had lockups using the add/remove programs in control panel.
I downloaded a wallpaper off of wincustomize.com, as I've done countless times in the past, and applied it to my desktop. A few moments later, several of my applications started to crash (Yahoo messenger, intellitype pro, intellipoint, etc.) and I get an error saying something about a module and that it's to protect something from being damaged by viruses. I panicked and closed everything and restarted. I checked eventviewer
OK so I've been having this problem where every application that has some sort of link in it and that launches another program from it, crashes (examples: clicking a link in somebody's status in Xfire or AIM, GameCam crashing when any game is launched with it, etc.). This has been happening for about a month now, and is really starting to frustrate me. The only thing that has been done to this computer for a long time was a few file re-installations that I did to fix a problem with my monitor (ask for more details if this may be a part of the problem).
the Xfire stuff isn't too bad because I can just copy/paste URLs, but I really need GameCam to work and it's not. But yeah, again, clicking any sort of link in a program that launches another program causes both applications to get exception data and crash.
I got a laptop back in January, and everything on it was running fine and fast, but as of late, it's been running a little bit slower, and it locks up completely quite a lot now, meaning I have to crash and restart, just to make it do anything. It's windows XP on a HP Pavillion dv1000 laptop. There's still a huge amount free on the hard drive, I think there's about 75% free. I use mcafee internet security suite, spybot S&D, registry mechanic and adaware se personal edition. Adaware, Spybot and registry mechanic say that everything is running normally, but when I run a virus scan on mcafee, it always stops at the same point. It freezes at something like 3759 files, which is something sharedmetadat infected.dat, which I think is something to do with the windows live messenger. Quite often, the computer will be running fine for long periods of time, but when I try to do some things, like a virus scan, its slows right down, or completely crashes.
i have a 2 year old compaq presario. runs xp pro sp2. intel pent lll 1133 mhz, 1.13 ghz, 348 ram. 16G HD, C drive -2G free, D drive - 6G free. I have installed and run Ad Ware (w/updated database) and Spy Bot search and destroy.I have deleted items in prefetch folder. have run defrag, and disk cleanup (defrag took over 8 hours to complete used to run Mcafee AV pro, Firewall and Spamkiller, have removed all mcafee products.
setup the new 19' LCD, re-staged XP on the desktop machine. Setup a nice wide screen desktop, remember selecting something in the CP about don't show the icon's and the rest is history. Menu wise all is fine, window apps work fine, ex. start -> run -> notepad, yet a start -> run -> will show the black window open, then disappear. Same with taskmgr, if you do 2ce, you get the taskmgr is already running yet you don't see it, nothing near the time, <ctrl>-<alt>-<del> shows nothing. I can however do a start -> run -> edit <enter> and get the edit screen. Somewhere there must be a setting to just say, desktop, stay behind! Even created a new user, logged in as that new user (default desktop, etc.) with the same results.
I am running Windows 2000. After doing a virus scan and quarantine I am getting the following message when I try to run certain programs, "C;WINNTSystem32Autoexec.nt.The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Windows Applications". I have seen some postings about this problem with Windows XP. Does anyone know what happened and how to fix it on Windows 2000?
My computer is acting up.. right after i finish starting up, before I even launch an application, the cursor will show a flickering hour glass (like it's processing something), however nothing is running. And when I do try to launch an application (something as simple as IE) it takes forever to load. I clicked "control-alt-delete" to see my task bar -- it shows no tasks being performed, but on the performance tab it shows CPU at 100%. I thought maybe I had a virus, so I did a scan using Trend Micro PC-cillin, but no viruses were detected.
i try to install a program and i keep getting the message. "C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable fo rrunning MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." What can i do to install this program?
I completely reformatted my HD and reinstalled windows. I added the drivers and just a couple of aps. Now my computer is SO slow. Aps take a good 30 seconds to open as do web pages. There is the odd time where something will open quickly (seems random) but not too often. I ran Hijack this, spybot and adaware and found nothing nothing to find.
I'm running a newly built system and am having an issue when running graphics-intensive programs, specifically a full system freeze. I don't believe I was having this problem at first, as I didn't notice anything unusual with a graphics-intensive game (Guild Wars) when the system was first up and running. Now, though, I can't run graphics intensive tasks without the system freezing. I updated a whole host of drivers in between, so I can't pinpoint a change or two that might've done it. System restore is acting a bit odd, telling me it can't restore to X point and no changes were made (but unfortunately offers no additional info on why).
This has happened two days in a row now. I log into my account, then when it gets to my desktop, all it shows is my desktop background picture. There are no applications running and there are no startup icons that I can click on. I have to force a restart on my laptop, and then when it starts up again everything is there.
I have the same problem with some programs that I want to install in my pc. I receive this problem error message:C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT the system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications. Choose Close to terminate the operation. There are several softwares that I would like to install on my pc but I cant because of this error One is a game, the other one is a program I need ot make programs and the last one is a typing software. Is there a way that I can install them on my pc?
I have XP pro and have been trying to change the name of the name in Outlook Express from MAIN IDENTITY to Len and I have ended up with 2 names and Main ID and Len will not delete and if I ask it to start in Main ID I get this message, THE CURRENT IDENTITY COULD NOT BE CHANGED BECAUSE ONE OF THE APPLICATIONS WAS UNABLE TO SWITCH. CLOSE ANY DIALOGUE BOXES IN OTHER APPLICATIONS BEFORE TRYING AGAIN. I have nothing else open how to get back to main and get rid of Len.
I just formatted my PC, I installed windows xp pro again but it installed everything on my small drive h: drive which only has 4gig on it, is there a way to change everything back to my c: that has 107gig on it? I installed a couple of programs and its already full.
I am having an issue with changing the main drive letter on my mother's computer. I made a pretty amateur mistake when I was re-installing Windows XP for her and left my external hard drive connected from taking her files off of her old hard drive so the installing found "H:" being the most appropriate drive letter and now a few badly written programs she has tried to install automatically fail because they are set to look for drive "C:".I know my only option is to re-install yet again to get a fresh start, but I was hoping there was another possibility (albeit might be harder) to set the drive letter right. Typically I went to "manage" and "drives and storage" and attempted to change the letter, but Windows will not allow me to change the drive letter of the main volume. If anyone has any suggestion, please throw them out there-I may have made an newbie mistake, but I know my way around pretty well.
I have a hard drive that comes with my PC and that has a corrupted Windows, but the boot.ini still works fine. So I got a new hard drive and installed a new fresh copy of Windows XP on it. So now I want to format the old hard drive and use the new hard drive as the boot drive. However, if I removed the old hard drive, the new hard drive doesn't boot at all. I've tried using the FIXMBR, FIXBOOT, and BOOTCFG /REBUILD commands, but I think I did it wrong.
My main HD is about to give up. It's making strange noises whenever I start up or have a file on that drive open.Could I buy a new HD and install it as a slave drive. Then clone my main drive to the slave drive and then get rid of the old main drive and put the clone in as my new main drive? Without a lot of f***ing about? The reason I ask about doing it this way is that I don't have a set of XP disks, I just have the recovery disk that came with computers 8-10 years ago. It's pre sp1 and I've used it three or four times already and I'm sure it will be more hassle than I need to re install from it.I'm running XP sp2. When I had this comp put together they had to do a raid controller, I don't really know what that is. Something to do with the fact that the main drive is IDE only and my current second drive is IDE or Sata but is in place as an IDE drive.
When ever I am clicking on something the window that I want opens behind the main one. Lets say your in control panel, you click on add and remove or user accounts. It doesn't pop up in front of the control panel.I see it on the task bar and I just click it to make it display. What could the cause or settings for this?
I have encountered rather a frustrating problem and am quite desperate for any help. Apologies for the long post, but I wanted to make sure to include all the relevant steps of how I reached the point I'm at now.Yesterday, running Windows XP Home Edition SP2, I tried out Google's new "Lively" program (3D interactive chat; mostly integrated into a web browser--Firefox in my case) for the first time. Later on in the day, just before bed, I decided I should defragment the C hard drive, as I had not done so in quite some time.I started the defragmenter while I was still tinkering with Lively, which was probably a bad choice, and perhaps very silly of me. A few moments after starting the defragmentation process, I clicked an option in Lively (to alter my avatar I think) and the system hung; both the mouse and keyboard no longer got any response from the computer.I waited for a little while, then I was able to move the mouse pointer again. I clicked in my browser window a couple of times to test responsiveness, but the system froze once more. After several minutes I gave up on waiting and went to bed, leaving the system to hopefully sort itself out.
One of my operatives is using a Windows 2000 SP4 PC, networked, and she's had problems shutting it down (which I've now resolved) but it's not locking when she's away from her desk, leaving it accessible to all. She assures me it used to lock. Before I delete her profile etc. I thought I'd ask on here in case it's a registry setting or something simple that I've missed.
A friend of mine asked me to look at his computer, after he was noticing a significant slow down in system processes etc. Its a 3 yr old Dell, 1.79gHz with a 30 gig HD and 256 megs of memory, running WinXP Home Edition. He never really knew much about computers, and as I discovered, he hadn't run his virus checker in almost 2 1/2 years, so that was certainly a dead giveaway that he was having problems.I managed to get AdAware and SpySweeper loaded onto it and ran them both, between the 2 programs I was able to wipe out a good majority of the cookies, the spyware and malware, however when I rebooted, the system immediately slowed down as soon as the desktop appeared and then ground to a halt entirely. The mouse moves, but that's it. I'm unable to Ctrl+Alt+Del, in order to shut it down I have to unplug the power cord, since it doesn't have a reset button.
I haven't yet been able to run HiJackThis! on the computer, I'm hoping running it in safe mode might afford me the ability to do that, but since I'm unable to decipher what it says, I'm going to be needing assistance on that level as well.
If you want the 2k lock box, but not the 2k login box then go to User Accounts and click "Change the Way Users Logon or Off" then uncheck Fast User-Switching but not Welcome Screen. This will leave you with the beautiful XP start-up and shut-down screen but also give you the professional lock box.
I have windows xp home and I am having a problem with my pc locking up constantly I am always using cntr alt delete to free it up I have a dell intel pentium 4cpu 2.53 ghz 1gig memory 300gig hd I have plenty of space the pc seems to run ok except for the freeze ups I am a rookie on the computer.
I'm not sure exactly how to explain this, but here goes. something is locking everything I download. I download zip files, and cant extract them, because its locked. I cant delete some of these files, because they're locked. I have an unlocker program, but its not any use when I want to extract zips. It often tells me that there is no locker present, but when I try to unzip, file is locked. I have no clue what is causing this. I am using a dell 2350 running xp. Thanks in advance for your input, and any other info that will be helpfull I will be happy to provide.
I am operating Windows 2000 XP on an almost new Dell and my computer keeps locking up. I can be in the middle of a program and suddenly the screen will turn blue with diagonal lines all over it. There are no error messages that come up nor have I had any in the past. The power button will not respond when I push it so I have to physically unplug my hard drive from the wall outlet to reboot. It used to only happen once a month but lately it's been once a week.
I need to further limit the user accounts on a number of XP machines. Something in the lines of GP would be nice but I think that can be done only in domain environment? Anyways my questions is what are my options. I am looking for ways to lock the desktop, user preferences/customization etc.
I have a dual monitor setup on my PC. Today, when I boot it up, the main monitor displayed all theboot information and startup stuff, however, when the system SHOULD have gotten to the user login screen, the main montor came up with "no signal." The secondary monitor at this time will still show my mouse moving around on it, and I'm able to move the mouse over to the main monitor but I can't see anything.I've gone through a few basic manuevers to see what was wrong. I booted in safe mode and logged in to my mai account and attempted to change the other monitor to the main one; However, Safe Mode does not appear to supoort multi-monitor and I couldn't change this. After that, I attempted to VNC into my computer with the notebook I'm on now. When I came to the login dialogue box, the only account I could log into was the invisible "Administrator" account. My main account, as well as a temporary account I created for testing, both came up with an error "Cannot access due to user restrictions." My theory is that because all of the accounts which are actually visible on the login screen seem to not be working, the login is bugging and not outputting anything to my main monitor (since I have verified both monitors and connections to be working properly).
