I completely reformatted my HD and reinstalled windows. I added the drivers and just a couple of aps. Now my computer is SO slow. Aps take a good 30 seconds to open as do web pages. There is the odd time where something will open quickly (seems random) but not too often. I ran Hijack this, spybot and adaware and found nothing nothing to find.

For several months I have had a problem with windows xp restarting - a stop error - caused by- according to Microsoft (when I report the error) - a device driver. the only device with new drivers that I have added is the video card. The problem has recently gotten worse - the computer now either restarts or freezes after 20 - 25 minutes (it even did this when I was operating in Safe mode). HP tech support suggested that I remove the video card and see what happens - result was the same. I suspect some type of hardware problem. Hp support receommends I do a system restore and that if the computer shuts down during the process I will know it's not the operating system
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just finished a re-installation of windows on a fairly old computer. got windows installed through the original windows cd, but i have lost the drivers and applications cd. I cant do anything without any drivers. cant even hardwire to the router to d/l drivers.....any help??? anyone know where I can get a copy of the drivers/app cd? Its a gateway, so old, they dont really care enough to help.......any help would be much appreciated.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently reloaded windows xp from scratch in a 2004 dell inspiron laptop using Dell cd's. It was working fine with sp2, but later I added sp3 and now computer takes about 5 minutes to open an application (anything from MSOffice apps to web browsers to anything else. After it finally comes up, it works slow but doable.
I would like to know what are the things I should be looking at that could be slowing the process so much. Is sp3 related? I'd rater not remove sp3 since all the applications were loaded after sp3 was installed
Could someone please help look to see what is making this computer so slow to respond to commands. I added RAM and it still seems busy doing something most of the time.It is my Mom's computer and I'm trying to help her with it. Just got it on high speed hoping that would help by letting the programs update in the background.

Setup a nice wide screen desktop, remember selecting something in the CP about don't show the icon's and the rest is history. Menu wise all is fine, window apps work fine, ex. start -> run -> notepad, yet a start -> run -> will show the black window open, then disappear. Same with taskmgr, if you do 2ce, you get the taskmgr is already running yet you don't see it, nothing near the time, <ctrl>-<alt>-<del> shows nothing. I can however do a start -> run -> edit <enter> and get the edit screen. Somewhere there must be a setting to just say, desktop, stay behind! Even created a new user, logged in as that new user (default desktop, etc.) with the same results.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy computer is acting up.. right after i finish starting up, before I even launch an application, the cursor will show a flickering hour glass (like it's processing something), however nothing is running. And when I do try to launch an application (something as simple as IE) it takes forever to load. I clicked "control-alt-delete" to see my task bar -- it shows no tasks being performed, but on the performance tab it shows CPU at 100%. I thought maybe I had a virus, so I did a scan using Trend Micro PC-cillin, but no viruses were detected.

I have watched it with Task Manager and Process Explorer and I don't see anything out of the ordinary running. So far I have watched Ad-Aware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy, Nod32 and Sonicstage omg. lock up while in use. Is there some way to set up a log file that will tell me what is happening when XP locks up. I would like to have more info on the reason for the problem.I can reinstall but I would really like to understand what is going on. This has never happened to me before.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running a newly built system and am having an issue when running graphics-intensive programs, specifically a full system freeze. I don't believe I was having this problem at first, as I didn't notice anything unusual with a graphics-intensive game (Guild Wars) when the system was first up and running. Now, though, I can't run graphics intensive tasks without the system freezing. I updated a whole host of drivers in between, so I can't pinpoint a change or two that might've done it. System restore is acting a bit odd, telling me it can't restore to X point and no changes were made (but unfortunately offers no additional info on why).

View 1 Replies View Relatedi recently began to experience slowing typing in all apps on my laptop the typing speeds are fine at the log in screen (when i type my password).i already checked msconfig for PCMService.exe, it's not there so that shouldn't be the problem.my system performance is how it has always been, i tried to play a large movie and it worked fine.as i type about 5% of the time typing speeds are fine. sometimes if i type a long phrase and wait it will quickly fill in what i have typed after stalling for a second.another forum post i read suggested deleting the keyboard driver and let it install again but i haven't tried that yet.

For example, if I click on an application from the desktop it will sit there for 10-20 seconds before anything happens. Occasionally I'll click multiple times on something and nothing will happen then 30 seconds later it will open multiple instances of things. Applications are then corrupted and PC slows down. with that other problems occur requiring the unit to be reimaged. Quick fix has been to delete the NTUser.dat and the user's profile. This does not always correct the problem. My questions are: What causes the file name to go from black to blue? What causes the applications to be slow or not to work or work properly?

Rather, when I start an application that would normally use a bit of CPU, it now spikes the CPU.In particular, 5 year old game called Neverwinter Nights is now unplayable and spikes up to 55% CPU usage on both cores even though it should only hit one core. The Earthsim program also does the same. So do other applications.

I don' know what file that is. there are two files that were not deleted: mon000.log and one named Dat.File pefib Perfdata Also ran ATF-cleaner
