View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought Vista since I figure I need to do a reformat and used this as an excuse to jump on the vista bandwagon, but here is my challenge with XP.This started about 2 weeks ago...when I launch Adobe Photoshop and go to open a file the program locks up and I can sometimes end the program and other times I need to reboot. I deleted and reinstalled the program and the same thing happened during the installation process. I downloaded a free picture editor (Faststone) and the same thing is happeneing. I also had lockups using the add/remove programs in control panel.
Here are the startups of my comp. Which would I remove?

View 14 Replies View RelatedRunning XP on a HP/Compaq NC6000. Had a page from HP site bookmarked that told what registry key to modify. HP has removed the thread, can't find the answer elsewhere. Ideas appreciated. I've seen posts for other models directing user to enter BIOS to change but unable to get into it. The registry key modification worked earlier.

View 8 Replies View RelatedAlthough I am running Windows ME I could not find a group listed for that OS so I assumed that for this problem XP is comparable(?). The problem is that for some reason on startup my computer wants the run scandisk. There seems o be a problem with scandisk because about three-quarters of the way throught the sacn it locks up. If I cancel the scandisk my computer seems to be acting OK but if I don't hover over the computer on startup I have to do a hard reboot

I've tried 10 or more and all give me a similar problem: error during install. some say, that they do not have write access to "program files" dir, but that's nonsense, since the installer installs the directory and some files already.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI keep having applications hang when I try to search for image files. Apps that are hanging include Windows Explorer, Outlook Express, Adobe Photoshop, and Quark XPress. I've gotten the Dr. Watson debugger message whenever Explorer hangs. The applications hang as soon as I select the folder where my images are stored. It's not all folders, only some, and it seems to randomly pick when it will or will not work. I have tried rebooting and it seems to work sometimes, but then other times I reboot and have display issues, such as fonts not being recognized and email messages shown all in italics. As a workaround, I have rebooted and been able to go to Explorer, and drag a file to the desktop. Then it seems to be fine when I access from the desktop.
Is there a way to save all my Windows Update files so that I may use them again in the future, you know, like a .exe file?
View 10 Replies View RelatedWhen I right click to "Save Image as" on a graphic file, the "Save As" window pops up and it lets me go through all the motions of selecting a location and name for the file, but then it does not actually save it when I click the "Save" button. The file does NOT get saved. And the progress and completion window does not come up to confirm the save. This has happened once before about a year ago, and I somehow fixed it by accident. Now it has happened again, and for the life of me.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWindows XP Search can get slow if you have a lot of compressed files on your hard drive. Speed up your searches by disabling this. Open the Run command and type the following:
regsvr32 c:winnt\system32zipfldr.dll /u or
regsvr32 c:windows\system32zipfldr.dll /u if installed in the windows directory
To turn this feature back on:
regsvr32 c:winnt\system32zipfldr.dll or

I have Windows XP. When I download a file (WP, pdf, etc.), and it asks me to open or save it, it will only let me save it. If I try to open it, it seems to download, but then the relevant application never opens, and I get a message that I may not have the appropriate permission. So I have to save it, then open the application myself, then open the saved file.
