I've been having performance problems in xp. It took longer than usual to start up, it took longer after clicking on the start menu, and it took longer for the start menu to load up. And even when the windows are closed, I sometimes hear the hard drive loading something and slows down the performance a bit. Can this be fixed (short of a reformat)?

A friend of mine got a newly built computer from a guy with a repair business. It takes over ten minutes to start up. HE tells thats normal. IT has 1.8 Ghz dualcore cpu, 2 GB RAM, Win XP pro, Norton and Acer logo flashes on the startup screen. I'm guessing some major hardware problems? Maybe something not compatible?

Our family computer is running like a slug. It takes forever to startup and open programs and the hard drive activity light is always on. It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. I have another hard drive that is in a removable tray that I use, and that has all the same settings and everything, but that one is using a fraction of the RAM and runs pretty good!

when I turn on my computer Windows take an extremely long time to finish loading. It seems to hang right at the end before explorer loads or finishes loading. I have Windows XP Pro SP2 with the latest versions of ZoneAlarm Security Suite and Spy Doctor and didn't find any spyware on my pc. I used CCleaner to look at my startup programs and removed any unneeded programs on the list. After Windows finishes loading, it runs fine. I'm just wondering if there is something wrong and how I can fix it.

I have an external HD 500GB (USB and eSata interface), originally formatted with NTFS on Vista, probably half used with files of all sizes (small / large). While connected via USB it crashed i.e. got corrupted somehow, and Windows was having trouble recognizing it (tried on Windows XP, Vista, 2k3 Server); Hence i tried the eSata interface, and upon bootup, Win2k3 detected errors, and prompted to run CHKDSK which i allowed it to. Note this is before it has loaded Win2k3 proper, and is running in cmd line mode.
Went thru the 3 stages really quickly (about 10 mins), after 3rd stage complete (security descriptors), next line says "Correcting Errors in the Upper Case File". And has been running for more than 5 days or 120 hours now (and counting)!! WTF? Few questions:.........

I have not been able to use my recycle bin on my XP machine for a long time. I can delete things, but cannot see the contents of the bin or clean it out. It always says it contains 44 items, but I have no clue what is currently in it or what happens to files that I delete at this point. If they are being somehow put somewhere or in the recycle bin, but I cannot empty it, so I could have megs and megs of stuff I have deleted floating around now. Can I reinstall the recycle bin software from scratch somehow?

Last week i turned my computer on and windows xp took so much longer to boot up. when the windows xp loading screen (with the blue progress bar) appears, its there for a few minutes, it used to be a few seconds. I scanned for viruses with Norton, scanned for spyware etc with Ad-Aware and Microsoft's Anti spyware, everything is all clean. All programs are up to date in definitions too. I cleaned my registry(registry mechanic), defragged my drives, done disc cleans, i have 2 programs in my start-up (norton and mcafee firewall) and still no joy. I have also used winxp manager and tried optimizing and xp still takes a long time to load.

About a year ago a friend gave me her old Dell Dimension XPS-550.I added a second hard drive of 160Gigs, CD Burner and boosted the memory up to 640Megs.Then I formatted the hard drive that was on it.I bought a full version of XP but when I tried to install it it required Windows 98 first. So I installed my 98SE then installed XP.When it is turned on it comes up with the DELL logo, which I understand is burned into the chip, then a black screen giving the option of hitting ALT C to get to SCSI setup.I have no scsi devices. It has always taken a long time to boot but today is the first time I have put a stop watch to it 4 mins, 37 seconds. My wife's Dell takes less than a minute.I have installed all the WINDOWS UPDATES and SP2.But the very slow boot time is nothing new but has been a pain since the beginning.I run ad-aware and spybot S&D often and nothing out of the ordinary there.I have Bell South DSL and use AOL.

Currently when I log onto my computer, it takes more than 5 minutes to load. I have already browsed through many threads and have minimized the number of start-up programs. It was a little better but it still wasn't like how it was before. Also, when I want to shutdown my computer, I have to wait 10 minutes before I will hear the "Windows turning-off sound" and it will shutdown. Does anyone have any clue about how to fix this?
The computer in general appears to be running smoothly once everything is loaded into the computer except for when I want to add/remove any programs where there is a huge lag after uninstalling a program! These problems started occurring about a couple days ago. I haven't been doing anything differently nor have I installed any new programs onto the new computer. I have scanned for viruses using Symantec Endpoint Protection (and no results) and also used CCleaner to clean everything else.

My WinXP Pro SP2 P4 desktop takes a very long time to boot. The time seems to be spent in a routine MBA (Managed Boot Agent) V4.30, which is provided by LAN Works Technology Co. of 3M Corp. The process identified is a boot execution executive named PXE V2.20. Since there is no LAN present on which a boot file is located, the process completes with "No boot file found." The booting process proceeds with the OS file located on the C drive. Is there a way to safely eliminate the MBA step?

Ran a boot-time defrag of my primary HDD this weekend. It seemed to complete successfully, however, I now takes literally 5 minutes or more for the PC to move from the Dell splash screen to the point where I can select the user profile. This is a Dell 8100 with a 50MB C: drive and a 250MB drive I am using for backup. Can I get by with reinstalling XP home and patching as needed, or do I need to reformat?

I have noticed lately that my computer seems to take an excessively long time to boot up completely - almost 5 minutes. Also when clicking on desktop icons, they seem to also take much longer to load. Windows Explorer (the folder and file management tool, not to be confused with Internet Explorer) is agonizingly slow to rename and open folders and files, sometimes taking close to 2 minutes just to open a 56 KB file. I have done all the usual things like running a virus and spyware scans (I have AdAware, Spybot, Malwarebytes and ATFCleaner, CCleaner as well as my ISP's Computer Associates Antivirus, Firewall and Spyware protection installed), emptying temp files and recycle bin, and defraging the hard drive and I've unchecked "Automatically search for Network folders and printers".
I also did a chkdsk scan and a system restore to before when the problem started. Nothing seems to help the slow response, especially when working with folders and files through Windows Explorer. I have not downloaded or installed any programs recently (only AdAware, Spybot and CA updates), but I did have a new power supply and a new cable modem installed recently. Even the tech that installed the new power supply said he was concerned at how long it took for my computer to boot up, however he only repairs hardware and could offer no suggestions as to what the problem is. If it's any help in diagnosing my problem, my system is an HP Pavilion 750n with a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor and 768 MB RAM. Used disk space is 16.8 GB, unused space is 57.6 GB....

i'm facing as current is the incredibly slow loading speed. It passes the "Dectecting IDE drives" screen quickly, but on the next screen it holds, for atleast an hour. On this screen it pretty much says:
It holds on this screen for a very very long time. I've tried changing some of the Bios but with absolutely no change or effect. On the next screen when it does actualy move, it's the Windows 2000 loading screen(With the row of bars showing how much it's loaded), it holds here again for a long time, again atleast an hour. I'm not sure exactly how long as I went to sleep out of bordom of waiting for it. Has anyone got any suggestions or any idea at all whats the matter with this. The RAM, Graphics card, Processor and Motherboard were all bought brand new and suggested by the store owner that I went to, he said that everything will all be compatable with each other componant.
