View 1 RepliesI have not been able to use my recycle bin on my XP machine for a long time. I can delete things, but cannot see the contents of the bin or clean it out. It always says it contains 44 items, but I have no clue what is currently in it or what happens to files that I delete at this point. If they are being somehow put somewhere or in the recycle bin, but I cannot empty it, so I could have megs and megs of stuff I have deleted floating around now. Can I reinstall the recycle bin software from scratch somehow?
View 14 Replies View RelatedMy computer takes a long time when I try to delete a file (doesn't matter what size or kind of file). Once I click on the file and hit delete the hard drive starts going and after a while I get a confirmation message "Are you sure you want to send file.ext to the recycle bin?" I click yes and then it's hung up again for a while as I watch pieces of paper float accross the screen from a file folder to a recycle bin, and then it finally deletes. This is a new problem on my old machine.I also can't open the recylcing bin, but I can empty it. When I click on the recycle bin it opens a window and shows the "flashlight" icon, the hard drive goes, and it never finished it's process, never displays the recycling bin contents.

When I click refresh in the recycle bin menu,it remains "full"(I have even checked to see if its full by opening the "bin, but nothing shows up after opening it),and I was wondering if anyone familiar with this particular problem might have an easy solution?
View 1 Replies View RelatedEssentially the symptoms are this:1.Opening files through Windows Explorer results in a 20 to 30 second pause before the files open. This happens on local and network drives.2.Executable files or applications open immediately. Also files open immediately from inside the application e.g. from Excel open dialog box.3. In explorer, right-clicking on files results in a 20-30 second delay in bringing up the menu, while with executables the menu comes up immediately.

While using explorer to open a folder and display the files in it, the illustrator (ai) files (hundreds of it in one folder) were shown with the generic/windows system icons first and gradually been transform to the Illustrator files icon. The process took so long and made a system in hold/freeze. It happens as well when tried open files using File Open in Adobe Illustrator or Design in the very same folder and files. I've tried solve it using Display Appearance Effect as well as using regedit to modify the value on Max Cached Icons in registry but didn't work.

First, booting up takes a long...time. When I finally log in, I get an error message: HP AiO Device Object failed: hRes = 0x800706BAThe RPC Server is unavailable.Maximum retry attempts exceeded.I click ok and it brings up my desktop, but originally would not bring up my Start button and taskbar. After messing with it all day yesterday, I finally got a taskbar, but not my usual one. I can open some programs, but can't save any files to floppy or CD. Everything is very slow...and I do mean very! Most of the time the Task Manager will show "Not Responding", sometimes it will eventually start running again and sometimes I just have to "End Process".
when I try to open a Lotus WordPro file (*lwp) inside a folder it can take 30 seconds or more to open. Sometimes I have to click on the file a second time at which time I get a(not responding) message on the folder bar.If I open the same file by starting WordPro and selecting the same file from among recently opened files it opens almost instantly. Other types of files don't seem to be affected the system crashes when I right click on a folder to try and display properties.

The default settings is normally huge as disk drives are so big.Users end up with 10s of thousands of files in this folder than can take 20 minutes to clean out. Many IE issues are also resolved by deleting temp internet files. We default the setting "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" on all systems but this does not seem to always delete everything.

It took longer than usual to start up, it took longer after clicking on the start menu, and it took longer for the start menu to load up. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an external HD 500GB (USB and eSata interface), originally formatted with NTFS on Vista, probably half used with files of all sizes (small / large). While connected via USB it crashed i.e. got corrupted somehow, and Windows was having trouble recognizing it (tried on Windows XP, Vista, 2k3 Server); Hence i tried the eSata interface, and upon bootup, Win2k3 detected errors, and prompted to run CHKDSK which i allowed it to. Note this is before it has loaded Win2k3 proper, and is running in cmd line mode.
Went thru the 3 stages really quickly (about 10 mins), after 3rd stage complete (security descriptors), next line says "Correcting Errors in the Upper Case File". And has been running for more than 5 days or 120 hours now (and counting)!! WTF? Few questions:.........

View 2 Replies View RelatedLast week i turned my computer on and windows xp took so much longer to boot up. when the windows xp loading screen (with the blue progress bar) appears, its there for a few minutes, it used to be a few seconds. I scanned for viruses with Norton, scanned for spyware etc with Ad-Aware and Microsoft's Anti spyware, everything is all clean. All programs are up to date in definitions too. I cleaned my registry(registry mechanic), defragged my drives, done disc cleans, i have 2 programs in my start-up (norton and mcafee firewall) and still no joy. I have also used winxp manager and tried optimizing and xp still takes a long time to load.

View 2 Replies View RelatedCurrently when I log onto my computer, it takes more than 5 minutes to load. I have already browsed through many threads and have minimized the number of start-up programs. It was a little better but it still wasn't like how it was before. The computer in general appears to be running smoothly once everything is loaded into the computer except for when I want to add/remove any programs where there is a huge lag after uninstalling a program! These problems started occurring about a couple days ago. I haven't been doing anything differently nor have I installed any new programs onto the new computer. I have scanned for viruses using Symantec Endpoint Protection (and no results) and also used CCleaner to clean everything else.
My WinXP Pro SP2 P4 desktop takes a very long time to boot. The time seems to be spent in a routine MBA (Managed Boot Agent) V4.30, which is provided by LAN Works Technology Co. of 3M Corp. The process identified is a boot execution executive named PXE V2.20. Since there is no LAN present on which a boot file is located, the process completes with "No boot file found." The booting process proceeds with the OS file located on the C drive. Is there a way to safely eliminate the MBA step?
