Disc Running Almost Every Time At Startup
Jan 13, 2007
Almost everytime when iam starting my laptop, its running chkdsk(see attachment), which takes about 5-7 minutes.I recently removed bitdefender antivirus and installed AVG as the earlier one had slowed my system. Also, to clean the registry i download RegSupreme Software from macecraft, could it be the culprit?

Our family computer is running like a slug. It takes forever to startup and open programs and the hard drive activity light is always on. It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. I have another hard drive that is in a removable tray that I use, and that has all the same settings and everything, but that one is using a fraction of the RAM and runs pretty good!

I want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.

Like many PC owners, I am running low on disk space. My once seemingly massive hard drive capacity of 185gb is now reduced to around 18gb, which has now prompted me to have a serious clear out.
Problem is, I honestly can't work out where all the used space has gone!
O.K. so, I have trawled through My Documents and held my mouse over all the folders that are likely to contain the most files - like, for instance, My Music, which shows at around 30gb, or, My Pictures, which has a filesize of approx. 20gb.
I have also looked at all the other folders in My Documents, none of which seem to exceed a few dozen, or a few hundred megabytes.
I have also looked at my installed software to see if any programs are swallowing up excessive space. But again, none seem to individually exceed more than a few hundred megabytes, at most.
So, were has all the rest of my missing 100gb gone?
My question is simple.
Is tere any easy and fast way to determine exactly what proportion of the HDD is taken up by what software?
Is there a software program available (preferably freeware) that will scan the drive and tell me exactly whats taking up space, and to what degree?
I have tried a few programs that say they will do exactly this, but after a scan all they seem to display is a pie chart showing whole sections lumped together, such as My Documents - total filesize 40gb etc. But this isn't really that helpful. It needs to be more thorough and broken-down than that.
For all I know, there may be a huge amount of space occupied by some long-since archieved files, of which I am totally oblivious. But, with the average PC holding millions of such files, how could I ever locate the possible cause unless I have software to do it for me?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200. Recently I have noticed that it was running very slow. The task manager shows that the CPU is always running at 100% and there are at least 70 processes running. I cannot use any program as it runs so slow that I have to wait a very long time before anything happens.I have also noticed that the fan on the computer is always running which was not the case before this problem surfaced.Any one have any suggestions or help to find the problem and fix it? I would really appreciate anything.

I have an external HD 500GB (USB and eSata interface), originally formatted with NTFS on Vista, probably half used with files of all sizes (small / large). While connected via USB it crashed i.e. got corrupted somehow, and Windows was having trouble recognizing it (tried on Windows XP, Vista, 2k3 Server); Hence i tried the eSata interface, and upon bootup, Win2k3 detected errors, and prompted to run CHKDSK which i allowed it to. Note this is before it has loaded Win2k3 proper, and is running in cmd line mode.
Went thru the 3 stages really quickly (about 10 mins), after 3rd stage complete (security descriptors), next line says "Correcting Errors in the Upper Case File". And has been running for more than 5 days or 120 hours now (and counting)!! WTF? Few questions:.........

I've been having performance problems in xp. It took longer than usual to start up, it took longer after clicking on the start menu, and it took longer for the start menu to load up. And even when the windows are closed, I sometimes hear the hard drive loading something and slows down the performance a bit. Can this be fixed (short of a reformat)?

I am using Windows XP, Explorer 6.At times I can hear something running and slows down or even stops what ever I am doing at the time.Sometimes just for a couple seconds but sometimes longer.Last night it ran for a longer period of time so I went Ctr/Alt/delete processes.I found that the svchost.exe system memory usage was running around 50,000 and normally it is around 19,500.I do not have any scans set to run automatic and the only thing that I have running all the time is Super Anti Spyware.

I bought a computer with XP Pro loaded. Recently discovered that the XP Pro is not "legal" so I went and bought XP Home (all I needed anyway). Loaded XP
Home but now when the computer starts up I get the choice to either run XP Home in safe mode or XP Pro as before. Bascially I want to run with XP Home and discard XP Pro so that I am legal and can register for updates etc. Err, what should I do?

here's what's up - after about 10 minutes of being on the computer it slows down significantly, particularly web browsing. i usually notice the problem when using firefox 2.0 to check out videos on Internet. after watching 2 or so videos, the videos become very choppy and the system starts coming to a halt. checking out the task manager - i find that the cpu hits 100% during these episodes and per the processes the cpu is being gobbled up by firefox. a similar thing happens when i run itunes.
i installed a browser to monitor cpu speed/temp etc. i found that i have tons of ram available (at least 600 mb) even during the slow periods. i also found that the cpu temp is pretty reasonable (53 c) but then i found that my cpu is running at 600 mhz (most of the time, irregardless if plugged in or not). i can't seem to make my system run at full cpu capacity and am not sure why or if this has anything to do with my problem.

Is there a way that I can look up the time and date of the activity on my computer? I am curious about both Internet activity, such as "at 3:43am on sept. 9, 2005 the page stumbleupon.com was being visited" and/or any computer activity such as "at 8:00pm the windows media player was being utilized" or "added files at 8:05pm". I guess what I am hoping for is a time-stamp log.I have Windows XP v.2002 SP2. I am connected to the Internet using Qwest DSL 7meg bandwidth max. I have MSN Premium as part of this package. And I am using Norton anti-virus 2004.

Dell XPS laptop filled with junk software and is running an average of 72 process which is crazy since most of the pc's are tweaked out so their only running about 30 processes at a time. Even if you exit out of all of the programs in the system tray, there's still like 69 processes going. And besides that lately he's been having tons of network issues so we're just going with a clean install. Besides, it was never reinstalled to begin with so it still has all of the Dell crap that came with it from the start.
the Dell Media Direct thingy. I'm not sure if my dad still has any of the disks that came with the laptop. We have plenty of XP Pro cds. I can find places on the web for instructions for doing this, but I'm open to suggestions because I've never installed any of Dell's crap. I'm not using an XP cd that has SP2 installed. But I don't think it's a problem since I'll be loading SATA drivers, right? Should just be plug and pray after that right? I'll get updates immediately. Also, is there anything special that I need to be warned about before I do this? Hopefully someone has reinstalled XP on an XPS before to help guide me through this. I've installed windows so many times but this seems like a different kind of project...

IT has 1.8 Ghz dualcore cpu, 2 GB RAM, Win XP pro, Norton and Acer logo flashes on the startup screen. I'm guessing some major hardware problems? Maybe something not compatible?

This is all fine except that after reboot it would show me the same prompt all over again. Is there any way to stop this from happening? (I don't want to install Cakewalk anymore). My OS is WinXP SP2.

I am posting a computer problem of "The slowest computer of all"? It takes 5 to 6 minutes to boot and then takes on some dialog boxes when clicking 7 seconds to activate, (Show on Screen) and on others, takes 14 to 21 seconds to activate? Sometime you even see the searching flashlite on the screen when you click. The same thing happens with the right click context menu. This computer is a HP a430n running a AMD Athlon(B) XP 3200+ running at 2.20 GHz. It has 1Gig of ram, a GeForce4 MX440 (Raven) AGP 8x graphic card,Integrated AC97 audio and a Maxtor 250Gig hard drive.
