I am running Win XP on a HP laptop. When I boot up a program always tries to load but it is one that I don't have or have tried to load. It always asks for the disk which I do not have. It is not located in the start folder, so I do not know where to go to delete it.

If you load a program in the start menu? startup folder? upon re-boot it will not start the selected program. My question is how do I delete the? startup?folder in my start menu? When I try it will not allow me to do so. This whole thing isn?t causing any problem. It?s just starting to grate on me.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi ran some pretty complicated malware-removal programs since my PC (on the office network) was showing loads of trojans and other malware. in the order of running, i ran Malwarebytes, MGTools, Combofix with the windows recovery option. Then, on not having found anything substantial, I uninstalled Combofix with the /u optiom and deleted C:Combofix and later, proceeded to delete C:MGTools.The PC allows me to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del log in, and once I hit Return after entering the password, it just shows me the blue background to the desktop - No items, no menus.Same thing happens in safe mode.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI didn't find an existing thread to the topic, so i apologize if the question has already been answered. at one point in time i had a mahjongg game installed on my windows xp run pc. i placed a shortcut on the start menu (above the frequent programs list). somehow or other, the shortcut was not removed when i uninstalled the program. my attempts to get rid of it since then are as follows:
1. when i right click on the icon, and select "remove from this list", nothing happens.
2. i attempt to run the shortcut and it says "the item you selected is not available. it might have been moved, renamed, or removed. do you want to remove it from the list?" i select yes, and nothing happens.
3. i attempt to rename the shortcut and it says "cannot rename file: cannot read from the source file or disk."
4. i open the properties and there is a message in the target type field saying "this is not a valid shortcut". i cannot change any of the fields without getting the error message in #3.
5. reinstalling the game doesn't change anything. i get the same error messages as above.
6. i searched through the registry for anything named "mahjongg", and it doesn't turn anything up.
If it is possible, and how to do it, to delete the My Recent Documents which shows up in the Start menu in XP. If that cannot be done easily, is it possible to delete the entries that appear there.

I can run task manager to get to all apps OK, but this is not very useful.I tried running from a previous known good state, but nothing changed. I noticed it when I rebooted after having defragmented system files using PerfectDisk 8. I assumed the list just got cleared, but it seems no matter how many programs I open, no new shortcuts are ever created. The space just remains blank.I'm not sure if this has any bearing, but I'm also running WindowBlinds 6. I've had WindowBlinds for a long long time and have never run across this issue. Also disabling WB doesn't seem to fix anything.I'm sure the solution is something quite simple

View 3 Replies View Relatedrecently my computer takes ages to get passed the Windows XP load screen. Sometimes the scrolling bars stop and it freezes before i it loads the desktop. It works if i safe boot it, but often it doesn't pass the Windows XP startup screen, or it takes a long time (approx 100s) to get passed it. Before it only took at most 10 seconds. It don't know why it's doing it. I've tried running a registry mechanic, prefetch cleaner and all that jazz.But it's still taking awhile to get passed that XP screen.

Running XP with 'CLASSIC' style menus. When I display PROGRAMS in the START menu, it only displays 3 or 4 items and then it has two Down Arrorws at the bottom of the menu, which I have to click to get the full menu. Is there some setting causing this to happen?

This then has the fly-out menu which used to open only the most recently accessed programs. Typically, after a boot it would show the items which opened in *Start-Up*, the rest were accessible only by hovering the mouse cursor over a button showing downward pointing arrows (more chevron like). This would then open the entire sub menu of programs to choose from. However, in the past week it now opens in that expanded view all the time. There is no sign of the little arrows anymore, and I always end up with a screen full of program lists whenever I go to Start/Programs.
