View 14 RepliesI ran into this problem in both WindowsME and XP. While in multiplayer mode in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I would get excessive page file activity which would get progressively worse. Map load times would constantly increase as each new map was loaded until the system reported WOLF.exe had caused and error and would shutdown the game. The solution for my system is to set both the Desktop AND game color to 16-bit. Also, set both to the same resolution. I like 1280 x 1024, but that may be too high for some systems. After this tweak, my map load times went from >1 min to between 10 and 20 seconds. Right where a P4 1.5 with 256 megs should be.

The computer was much faster before i downloaded these hoards of anti-malware programs such as SuperAntiSpyware, WinPFind3u, Avenger, HostsXpert, CCLeaner, and HiJackThis (in addition to Spybot S & D and AdAware which i originally had. I Once measured the time it takes for the computer to restart.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently developed a problem with very slow shutdown and startup both. With no programs running, it takes about a minute and a half to shut down, about two to boot up, and about five to load programs after I select user. During the program load, the hard drive is running like crazy, with Task Manager showing a lot of use by explorer.exe, ctfmon, and one svchost entry. At times, one of the two latter ones will jump as high as 98% usage. I tried disabling every startup program with Task Manager while disconnected from the net, deleted restore points, defragged, and the delay improved only slightly. In addition to AVG a/v, Spybot, and Adaware I have run CCleaner and the full version of Registry Mechanic with no improvement. I have gone down the HijackThis list using the cheat sheet in this forum and deleted a couple of suspicious items, that didn't help either. On the attached startup list, I have no clue what the fourth item with no command listed might be. I have recently added an external hard drive for storage and backup and a new monitor, fwiw, but the problem seems to have started at some point after that. The web sites in the HJT log are all legitimate.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI shut down my computer by holding down the power button, instead of waiting for windows to close the open programs and shut down properly When I got back, I turned the computer on, and the boot process was severely messed up. After the animated black Windows XP screen, it goes black for a few minutes, then the blue screen that says 'windows is starting up' (or something similar) appears, but stays for another 5 or so minutes. Then, the 'Welcome' blue screen comes up but stays for even longer. When Windows finally loads, the wallpaper loads, then the desktop icons (note programs' correct icons don't show, only window default 'exe' icon), then the task bar, but the task bar remains white and only has the start button, quick launch and clock no other icons show.It stays like this indefinitely, with the CPU light flashing and the computer seemingly loading. I left it on all night and it got no further. When in that state, anything I click on (including ctrl-alt-del) takes about 5+ minutes to do.I tried safe mode - it took so long to load I gave upI tried ERD Commander - not even that would load past a blank screen with a cursor.I tried booting from the Windows CD - the reinstall option isn't there and it doesn't spot the previous installation.I am using Windows XP Home SP2.Is there a solution or do I have to format and reinstall?

View 3 Replies View Relatedthink it all started 2 days ago. i had installed a game, but it would not start cause i needed some missing dll files. which i inserted. one of the things i did wrong however was that i tried to replace a faultrep.dll file. this was not the file i wanted to change. i read wrong on the error dll messege, but whenever i tried to replace it the old file would swap in, so no harm should have come from that. i also installed a missing direct x file: D3DX929.dll ..... thats the dll changes i have done. anyway the next day startup was weeery slow. i uslay can boot up my pc in 2 minutes, now it takes 5++ minutes, the destop appears in normal time. but the welcome tune is a good 2 minutes late, then programs that now are slow to start up are live messenger and zone alarm pro. also i have other problems. like i cant accses "my computer" by icon or other ways

View 1 Replies View Relatedmy pc is taking a lot of time 2 boot up. I have 2 stare at the welcome screen 4 a few secs, then the wallpaper and the taskbar applications come up, but no icons on the desktop. After maybe 20 secs the icons show up but then the wallpaper vanishes, and comes back a few secs later. After all this, the pc connects 2 the network. Why has it gone so slow? I just have avast! antivirus, the xfire firewall, the HP imaging solution center and Free Download Manager in the tray
View 2 Replies View RelatedI ran into a Trojan and finally after many attempts to remove, ended up using Microsoft's malicious software removal tool. (Free) and Norton's 2002 with updates. No slowdowns now while on the Web or local use. However It takes forever to shutdown. I went in and changed the normal shutdown time from 20000 to 5000 that seemed to solve it. The next day it slowed down again. I followed the instructions at Microsoft's website called Startup and shutdown trouble shooter. I went to msconfig and followed instructions. I found that if I disabled tfswctrl.exe, It would shut down fast. I read in a posting that the file is a HP file concerning DVD or Cd operations and isn't essential. PS I did run REG Organizer 1.4 in the automatic reg cleaner mode and it found additional problems that it repaired and some bad folders and links that were bad. That didn't solve the shut down length.
So my question is there a way to solve this dilemma, like an update? or can I just keep it from running without effecting my 2 CD/dvd units. both are HP one is Cd write and DVD read and the other is DVD/CD write both.
Lately my computer has been extremely slow, not just internet slow but onboard slow. For example, if I click on an application from the desktop it will sit there for 10-20 seconds before anything happens. Occasionally I'll click multiple times on something and nothing will happen then 30 seconds later it will open multiple instances of things. This delay has been happening with just about anything I click on, acting like the computer's busy doing something else when nothing else should be going on. I've looked in the task manager and the applications column will be blank
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm first going to post my Computer specs before I go into what's happening. My computer use to and still is(not as much for some reason unknown reason)just switches off completely, no Windows is logging off or anything. Sometimes when I put my computer into Hibernate, I get a BSOD and when I switch my computer off or on it takes awhile to get into Windows(I think that's because of Panda Internet security, kills system resources) Also, XP freezes..I can do everything with the keyboard like get to Task Manager but basically the whole desktop freezes.I'm not sure when it started to do all this, and I doubt it's a Virus or any other malicious content. It's just even with 3gbs of RAM, XP seems slow, I can feel how and when my computer is going fast from when I upgraded my RAM from 2-3gb but I'm not feeling it because of the hanging.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy sister's computer is running very slowly, particularly at startup (which seems to take forever). I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. To help me determine what's going on, could someone much smarter than myself take a look at this HJT log and see if you see anything of concern?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI've gone to msconfig and deleted some start up files, deleted some programs from add/remove, made folders for favorites. Everything I could think of to decrease startup time. Nothing seems to help. I still have to wait around 10-15 mins before IE starts up. I even installed firefox to see if that would help with start up. Nothing. I did a Diskeeper scan and found that there were alot of low system files (pink). Could this be the reason for a slow start up. Is there anyway that I can help this poor little computer. It really drags at startup.
