I deleted some large (2 to 3MB) Photoshop files in order to free up disk space, but two of them cannot be deleted or moved from recycle bin. "Empty recycle bin" command or "Delete command" yield the following error message; [error messages refer to the files as Dc2 and Dc8, respectively]: "cannot delete Dc8:it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." "Restore" command, attempting to cut and paste, or attempting to drag either file to another folder yield this error message: "cannot move Dc8:it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." This happens even when recycle bin is right-clicked from the desktop icon immediately after start-up and with no programs running.

I use my D: drive exclusively as a backup. I would like for it to keep a few items in case I delete something by accident, but I want to be able to empty it. I can't figure out how to empty it. It does not have the trashbox icon like the "Recycled" folder on my C drive. It does not have an "Empty Recycle Bin" in the File Menu drop down like the one on the C: drive. I have tried several times to delete the items in it. They go away when deleted as expected by they keep coming back. They are like zombies, you can't kill them.

Have an issue that I couldn't find a solution in Google or on these forums, so I am going to post. When deleting a file/folder from an WinXP desktop, typically it would go to the Recycle Bin, incase I need it for later. In this case, it isn't.its just deleting. Not ending up in the Recycle Bin, and no chance to recover.
Is there anyway to change so that they end up in the Recycle Bin first, before being deleted?

They are in the Windows directory, at the beginning. This is Win/xp sp2.
I think they are some sort of uninstall file for MS fixes. But I don't honestly know. I have several pages of these files. Does anyone know what they are??
Can I safely delete these files????

I've been unable to delete a folder and subfolder that appeared out of nowhere in October of 2003. The folder is named C:502371470d48710f4f and contains a subfolder named sp2. The subfolder contains 0 files. Both folders are read-only. I go to Properties and uncheck the read-only attributes; however when I try to delete I then find that the attributes have returned to (grayed-out) read-only. Access, of course, is denied.

I've got a machine running Win XP Home SP 2. Ther is a folder containing files in the Program Files folder that I want to delete. When I attempt to delete any of them, either to the recycle bin not, I get an error "Access Denied - ...". I am the computer administrator. The only help I could find on Microsoft site tells me to have the administrator change my privileges or the permissions on the files. Well, since I am the administrator, it seems like I should be able to do it myself.

For some reason,I have about 200 temporary files in the WindowsTemp folder that look a lot like registry entries. They are hidden files, and I have been unable to delete them. They all begin with CS, and have a time-stamp that coincides with bootup. Here is one:CS2F1A1E2B-3FE4-44EE-80E5-22C16FD91008.tmp I get an error message that the files are in use, but I can't figure out what is using them. I also tried to access them from Safe Mode command prompt. They don't show up there.

I recently reinstalled XP but I didn't format the hard drive during the process. My hard drive is now almost full because the files and folders were not deleted...and they are nowhere to be found. I vaguely remember an option somewhere to delete files from a previous installation in xp but I can't seem to find it anywhere.I even tried Googling it but can't find it. Does anyone know how I can get rid of these old files.

Using XP SP2 and I can not move, rename or delete any folders. For example - I create a New Folder and try to rename it - it stays as New Folder. I try to move ANY folder and it does not move - stays where it is. Even when copying contents of a USB stick - folders will not move, be renamed or deleted. I CAN however, move files and rename and delete files - just not ANY folder!I can delete the folders from the command prompt though.

I have a folder that I can not delete. I had a bunch of folders with music files in them. I was re-arranging, renaming, and deleting them. At the end of the day, there was one folder that I could not delete from the recycle bin. When I tried to empty the recycle bin, it would delete files until it got to this one. Then I would get the message:(Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk). I would then have to go into the recycle bin and delete the remaining files manually. But this one would still not delete out of the recycle bin.

The error I get is: "Are you sure you want to delete these 55 items?" (Yes) "Cannot delete (long filename): the filename you specified is invalid or too long. Specify a different filename." The problem is, the recycle bin appears empty when viewed, and I've tried making sure all hidden files and folders are shown.I've tried ForceDelete (on the weird file/folder/whatever in c: ecycler) and it did not work.I've also tried removing and replacing the registry entry for the recycle bin, it did not correct the problem. Is there a way perhaps to do this in DOS? What would the exact command/location be? I've tried "deltree C:
ecycler" and "del C:

I've got Windows XP on my laptop. I recently created a file on my desktop with some Mp3's in it. I moved the Mp3's to my player and deleted the contents. Therefore, the folder remained empty. When I went to delete the folder, the recycle bin would not let me put it in there. I get a message saying: "Cannot delete (name of file): cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path or file name".

I'm using Windows XP - the other day I scanned a film negative into Adobe Photoshop, tweaked it then saved it. Yesterday I was tidying up and binned the file because I no longer needed it. Then, doing routine PC 'maintenance' I went to empty my Recycle Bin and couldn't remove this particular file. I get the message: "Cannot delete Dc4: It is being used by another program or person. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." The filename is actually Scans2. I know of no programs running that might be using this scan. I read some other help sites, downloaded a utility called Mboot but couldn't select the file to drag and drop into Mboot's space. I can't rename it, move it, restore it or delete it ! I give up - I know this isn't a major problem but I worry about viruses and the like - I have Norton Firewall and anti-virus etc. all up to date.

There is an Adobe Illustrator file in my Recycle Bin (Windows XP Professional) that seems to be locked. When I try to delete it or restore it, I get the error message "Cannot delete Dc152: It may be in use by another person or program." I have no idea where "Dc152" comes from. That is not the name of the file. How do I troubleshoot this?

I recently had to reinstall Norton Utilities on XP SP2. Now deleted files get dumped into another folder 'within' the recycle bin. This folder is named: S-1-5-21-1708537768-175567821-839522155-1004 I am unable to delete this folder. To see any files now I have to open up Norton EuErase Wizard I do this by clicking on this unwanted folder (S-1-5-21-1708537768-175567821-839522155-1004) I have another drive - I have each drive independent - both create this folder.

Recently I have RB.tmp files in my recycle bin. They are coming after turning the computer on, or after deleting a file. It can be RB8, RB9 or any other RB with numbers or letters. The worst part is - all content of the recycle bin is disappearing next day (except this files).Click on "proprties" of these files gives: 0 bites, origin: recycler. The mistery started (at least I noticed it) soon after I switched from Norton to Rogers Protection (wrong move?).

My computer's deleted files don't go to the bin, but are directly deleted. I have fixed the problem temporarily by renaming the c: Recycle folder and then letting Windows create a new bin, then deleting the renamed folder. This lasts for a day or two then the problem returns. I'm looking for a more permanent fix short of reformatting.

When I delete emails in Outlook Express they move over to the Deleted file ok.
When I try and empty Deleted file I get an error message saying they can not be deleted and there may be some damaged section on the main drive. It then says I should run Scan Disk or similar.
There is no ScanDisk but I went control Panel, c drive, properties and ran Ckdisk.
It takes a while to run and I have done it several times, as well as Disk Cleanup
Colin.
