Recycle Bin Shows Full Even Delete Everything From It
Mar 7, 2005
Just deleted Norton System Works 2004, and installed Norton System Works 2005 Premier. Since that time my recycle bin shows full even though there is nothing in it. Went back to standard recycle bin from Norton Protected Recycle Bin with the same result.

I have gone into my recycle bin on many occasions, and there are never any files in there. At the bottom it also says "0" objects. As a novice, what have I setup wrong, and what can I do to remedy this?

My daughter is running win XP professional on a desktop Gateway P4 (about 3 years old) and after successfully cleaning up incredible amounts of spam (Look2Me- horrible!), I found that her recycle bin shows no deleted files. It doesn't even show that they are being deleted, yet they disappear. Of course I have all the usual checked off in both the Recycle Bin Properties and in Win Explorer like 'view hidden files and folders'. It's also set to '10% max size', '1 setting for all drives', and 'show delete confirmation' (which it does not do). Also strange to me is that there is only a Global tab available in her recycle bin properties. I run XP Home on my desktop and laptop, and there are 2 other tabs for both C and D drives. She has no windows login set so there are no administrator rights set which would prohibit me from deleting. I've searched through article after article online and even downloaded a recycle bin fix (restorerecyclebin.reg) from a reputable site. I then attempted to do a manual fix to delete the recycle bin and let Windows replace the bad component (Info2 - whatever this is), which suggested using the command prompt (CMD) and typing in a series of directions, but when I type each line in and press 'enter', it doesn't recognize the direction (I'm not too sharp in the DOS area!).

I have a download accelerator called DAP. DAP has an option to send a file that you downloaded to the Recycle Bin. I used that today and then emptied the Recycle Bin. When I emptied it, the Recycle Bin icon stayed the same (it looked like the Recycle Bin was still full). When I opened the Recycle Bin, it was empty. But the "Empty Recycle Bin" button in the Recycle Bin box

I have not had a problem for a while regarding my desktop icons not refreshing, but have recently had my recycle bin display as the full icon when it has nothing in it? When I click refresh in the recycle bin menu,it remains "full"(I have even checked to see if its full by opening the "bin, but nothing shows up after opening it),and I was wondering if anyone familiar with this particular problem might have an easy solution?

I have a folder that I can not delete. I had a bunch of folders with music files in them. I was re-arranging, renaming, and deleting them. At the end of the day, there was one folder that I could not delete from the recycle bin. When I tried to empty the recycle bin, it would delete files until it got to this one. Then I would get the message:(Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk). I would then have to go into the recycle bin and delete the remaining files manually. But this one would still not delete out of the recycle bin.

The error I get is: "Are you sure you want to delete these 55 items?" (Yes) "Cannot delete (long filename): the filename you specified is invalid or too long. Specify a different filename." The problem is, the recycle bin appears empty when viewed, and I've tried making sure all hidden files and folders are shown.I've tried ForceDelete (on the weird file/folder/whatever in c: ecycler) and it did not work.I've also tried removing and replacing the registry entry for the recycle bin, it did not correct the problem. Is there a way perhaps to do this in DOS? What would the exact command/location be? I've tried "deltree C:
ecycler" and "del C:

I've got Windows XP on my laptop. I recently created a file on my desktop with some Mp3's in it. I moved the Mp3's to my player and deleted the contents. Therefore, the folder remained empty. When I went to delete the folder, the recycle bin would not let me put it in there. I get a message saying: "Cannot delete (name of file): cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path or file name".

I'm using Windows XP - the other day I scanned a film negative into Adobe Photoshop, tweaked it then saved it. Yesterday I was tidying up and binned the file because I no longer needed it. Then, doing routine PC 'maintenance' I went to empty my Recycle Bin and couldn't remove this particular file. I get the message: "Cannot delete Dc4: It is being used by another program or person. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." The filename is actually Scans2. I know of no programs running that might be using this scan. I read some other help sites, downloaded a utility called Mboot but couldn't select the file to drag and drop into Mboot's space. I can't rename it, move it, restore it or delete it ! I give up - I know this isn't a major problem but I worry about viruses and the like - I have Norton Firewall and anti-virus etc. all up to date.

I deleted some large (2 to 3MB) Photoshop files in order to free up disk space, but two of them cannot be deleted or moved from recycle bin. "Empty recycle bin" command or "Delete command" yield the following error message; [error messages refer to the files as Dc2 and Dc8, respectively]: "cannot delete Dc8:it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." "Restore" command, attempting to cut and paste, or attempting to drag either file to another folder yield this error message: "cannot move Dc8:it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." This happens even when recycle bin is right-clicked from the desktop icon immediately after start-up and with no programs running.

There is an Adobe Illustrator file in my Recycle Bin (Windows XP Professional) that seems to be locked. When I try to delete it or restore it, I get the error message "Cannot delete Dc152: It may be in use by another person or program." I have no idea where "Dc152" comes from. That is not the name of the file. How do I troubleshoot this?

I use my D: drive exclusively as a backup. I would like for it to keep a few items in case I delete something by accident, but I want to be able to empty it. I can't figure out how to empty it. It does not have the trashbox icon like the "Recycled" folder on my C drive. It does not have an "Empty Recycle Bin" in the File Menu drop down like the one on the C: drive. I have tried several times to delete the items in it. They go away when deleted as expected by they keep coming back. They are like zombies, you can't kill them.

I recently had to reinstall Norton Utilities on XP SP2. Now deleted files get dumped into another folder 'within' the recycle bin. This folder is named: S-1-5-21-1708537768-175567821-839522155-1004 I am unable to delete this folder. To see any files now I have to open up Norton EuErase Wizard I do this by clicking on this unwanted folder (S-1-5-21-1708537768-175567821-839522155-1004) I have another drive - I have each drive independent - both create this folder.

Have an issue that I couldn't find a solution in Google or on these forums, so I am going to post. When deleting a file/folder from an WinXP desktop, typically it would go to the Recycle Bin, incase I need it for later. In this case, it isn't.its just deleting. Not ending up in the Recycle Bin, and no chance to recover.
Is there anyway to change so that they end up in the Recycle Bin first, before being deleted?

My system is set up with three harddrives and multiple partitions on each drive.I know that if I just delete a file, it's stored in the Recycle Bin and not actually deleted, even if I empty the bin. However, since the Recycle Bin is on the C: drive, if I delete a file from another drive's partition, and then I use Eraser on the Recycle Bin to overwrite the files inside, are the files still on the partition and the empty space on it now has to also be Erased?

I have a very large, corrupt disc image on my hard drive that I want to delete, but every time I try to delete it Windows displays the message "Cannot delete 'filename': it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." The disc image is not mounted with any program, and hasn't been for some time. I tried aborting random processes that I thought might have something to do with the file, as well as restarting. No matter what I do, there seems to be something using the file. Are there any tricks to getting around this so I can delete it? Can I check, somehow, to see what program is using it?

my recycle bin shows itself to be empty, but when i click to clear it, something weird happens, it asks if I want to delete WINDOWS. I'm assuming that this means the directory C://Windows, which would be catastrophic if I were to restart the computer. I have a Compaq Presario R3000 running WinXP Home. Today, I both CrapCleaned it, as well as used Registry Mechanic. I had not emptied my recycle bin since then, until now. I had also scanned it with Trendmicro PCcillin 2006, which found two viruses, which had been quarantined, and then I deleted the quarantined files. Remember, this was all prior to me emptying my trash can.

If you're like me, you appreciate the clean desktop that XP offers. Unfortunately, one item remains: the Recycle Bin. You can't get rid of it through any menus or anything like that. After much hacking around in the registry, I finally found the responsible key. Simply delete and restart. When you restart, the Recycle Bin is no longer on the desktop. When you delete stuff, it still prompts to send it to the Recycle Bin, as always. To fully delete something, just delete it from C:Recycled. or C:Recycler (name dependsĀ on file system). To view this folder, you have to have everything set to be seen, including hidden folders and procted OS files and all that.
