Cannot See Other User Documents Folder
Aug 7, 2005I share computer with my wife. Both we have administrators rights.When I opened "My computer" view in Windows Explorer I used to see items like:

User Profile Corrupt, Lost My Documents Folder?
Jun 21, 2005when I booted my XP Pro system, my user profile admin) was corrupt and all my user settings were lost.Then I found that my documents were gone too.The files do not appear anywhere on my hard drive. no docs & settings folder has them. btw, no viruses found on my pc.When I use a undelete file utility, I can see the files at cdocuments & settings/temp, but windows explorer does not see this folder. Nor does explorer see any *.doc, *.xls, *.jpg, or any other file that I had saved in "My Documents" The file resoration free ware that I downloaded (to usb drive) does recover some files that have not been written over. Dec 24, 2005To begin with. My Hal.dl file ended up missing, so I got an error and had to reinstall windows, bla bla bla bla. i didn't lose all my data, and just reinstalled windows. I had to reinstall all my programs again, and everything went swell, untill I hit one problem. I had a ton of data (over 15 GB of pictures/music, etc) on my desktop. Since it was on my desktop, I now have my previous user folder in my documents, and I am un able to open it, delete it, rename it, etc. I know that the data is still there because when I check how much of my drive is taken up, it is obvious. I would like all users to have a view of their 'my documents' folder.Also, the administrator can see these folders, but sometimes they are called 'User's Documents' and sometimes, just 'User'!

Feb 6, 2009In previously highlighted issues regarding backing-up shared documents to my Seagate Freeagent hard drive, I simply decided to move the My Music Folder from the shared documents folder, but Windows is disallowing me from doing this stating that My Music is a Windows system folder & cannot be renamed or removed? Apr 2, 2007I made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.
However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".
The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".
This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.
In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find
For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open
Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?
Accesing Old User Documents & Settings?
Mar 14, 2006I recently replaced my motherboard which because my new one is a different chipset than my old one, required me to repair my windows install. Rather than do that and possibly lose a bunch of stuff in My Documents folder and my extensive Favorites I opted to just do a new install on another partition. So far everything has worked fine but when I tried to get into my old Admin files in my "Documents & Settings" Folder it gave me a red x and said Access Denied.

After checking the recycle bin and searching for hidden files and folders with no luck, I logged in as admin and looked at his C:documents and settings'username' folder and found that it was created on his original hire date in 2009. (nearly a year ago)

Dec 28, 2004I had a registry problem, in that when I booted up my laptop, it said a hive file for the SOFTWARE key was damaged. I fixed this by going into recovery console and restoring the registry backup. So now Windows starts again and everything is good. All of my files are still in tact. However, my settings are all gone. Even though my files are on the hard drive, the appearance of everything is as if Windows has just been installed. Jul 13, 2005I was not able to restore the system back to a previous state, nor was I able to back-up my documents, so I was forced to reinstall Windows XP Professional version 2002 and all of my other applications. A new Active Directory was created, giving me new user accounts, even though I used the same user names that had been created under the old installation. Under one of the old user accounts, I had a folder that was password protected, and it contained several important documents. Since the new Active Directory does not recognize that old user folder, I can not gain access to the folder to retrieve the files, even when logged on as the administrator. I get an error message that reads: Documents and Settings My Documents is not accessible.

Everybody can see the shares on Laptop -- and everybody sees the same list of shares
Everybody can browse Laptop's C-drive and E-Drive.
No one can browse either Laptop's main user's My Documents or the general Shared Documents folders.

Aug 12, 2005Alrite, ive got an emachines notebook running xp home on it. We bought it from best buy, and i guess they registered the computer to a 'valued customer' and its really annoying. Idk how the user name stuff works, but i think a while ago(not 100% positive cuz it was like 2 years ago) when we first got the computer i changed the admin 'valued customer' name to my name. but the 'my documents' folder defaulted to 'c:/documents and settings/valued customer' still. i fixed it by making a folder on c: with my name and made that folder the target location for the My Documents folder.

Oct 23, 2007New user, first time post here. I've got a problem with Windows XP. So a friend of mine gave me a copy of norton ghost 2003 to try out. Well, it must have been a bad copy because when I tried to run it, the program just hung up and did not start the dos ghost, despite waiting for an hour. I shut off the power to the computer, and then it was stuck in this loop of going to pc-dos whenever I turned on the computer. It would not bypass this despite picking the option to skip ghost and go straight to windows. Both children can access internet, but only 1 can access printer. I actually figured out the problem that's huge as I'm a network idiot. Jul 30, 2005Is it better to have the MyDocuments folder outside the local C: drive or to use the default MyDocuments folder that is a subfolder to the local C: drive? Why? I have been using a MyDocuments folder that is at the same level as MyComputer in the directory tree, because I was told that there is a limitation to the size of the MyDocuments folder. However, it also was mentioned that the size limitation does not exist with WinXPpro.
