View 8 RepliesI got a virus a while ago which froze windows after startup. The only recourse was to reinstall windows on a different partition. The virus is now wiped out, but my old install of windows was ruined. I attempted several methods of troubleshooting, the latest being running a windows repair through the CD. The current situation of the old install is that it boots up to a black screen where I can manoever the mouse cursor as desired but without any other functionality (this is before the login screen, which never occurs).
View 10 Replies View RelatedI had a system crash related to installing xp sp3. The only way I could get the system back up was to reinstall windows. Is there any way to find the files that were in the previous windows installation's 'my documents' folder? I had a few important files lost thru this process, and wondered if there is any possibility of recovering them.

I tried different restore times but was unable to solve the problem. it all started when I installed Nero. When I tried to access my music folder. I then got an error message stating that the folder was not responding. I then had the bright idea to do a PC recovery. bad idea. it deleted all of my user files except for shared files.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a small domain with about 20 XP SP3 client machines. There are 25 or so domain members. One of my users had some files "disappear" from his My Documents Folder. After checking the recycle bin and searching for hidden files and folders with no luck, I logged in as admin and looked at his C:documents and settings'username' folder and found that it was created on his original hire date in 2009. View 1 Replies View RelatedI was not able to restore the system back to a previous state, nor was I able to back-up my documents, so I was forced to reinstall Windows XP Professional version 2002 and all of my other applications. A new Active Directory was created, giving me new user accounts, even though I used the same user names that had been created under the old installation. Under one of the old user accounts, I had a folder that was password protected, and it contained several important documents. Since the new Active Directory does not recognize that old user folder, I can not gain access to the folder to retrieve the files, even when logged on as the administrator. I get an error message that reads: Documents and Settings My Documents is not accessible.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAlrite, ive got an emachines notebook running xp home on it. We bought it from best buy, and i guess they registered the computer to a 'valued customer' and its really annoying. Idk how the user name stuff works, but i think a while ago(not 100% positive cuz it was like 2 years ago) when we first got the computer i changed the admin 'valued customer' name to my name. but the 'my documents' folder defaulted to 'c:/documents and settings/valued customer' still. i fixed it by making a folder on c: with my name and made that folder the target location for the My Documents folder.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI suffered a drive crash (I believe) on my Dell m1210 laptop and tried to use the Recovery Console to repair the corrupt files. When that failed, I swapped the bad drive with a new one. When I plug in the bad drive as an external one, all my folders show up except for "Documents and Settings." I tried various file recovery applications (Disk Inspector, Recover Files) and the Windows disk repair but I can't find the "My Documents" folder or any of the files that were in there.

The machine restarted ok and was able to login back in ok.However.. the client has now lost all user data within his users profile - mainly under My Documents, Outlook data files and outlook address book.I have looked all over his machine and these files do not exist anywhere now.

All the 'My Documents' folders for all users display as 'My Documents' rather than '<User> Documents' in My Computer, so it is hard to distinguish between them. Is there anyway to change them so only the current user's are displayed as 'My Documents?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently replaced my motherboard which because my new one is a different chipset than my old one, required me to repair my windows install. Rather than do that and possibly lose a bunch of stuff in My Documents folder and my extensive Favorites I opted to just do a new install on another partition. So far everything has worked fine but when I tried to get into my old Admin files in my "Documents & Settings" Folder it gave me a red x and said Access Denied.

I did a system restore which brought back the 'User' account, but none of the files.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a registry problem, in that when I booted up my laptop, it said a hive file for the SOFTWARE key was damaged. I fixed this by going into recovery console and restoring the registry backup. So now Windows starts again and everything is good. All of my files are still in tact. However, my settings are all gone. Even though my files are on the hard drive, the appearance of everything is as if Windows has just been installed. In Documents and Settings, the reason is revealed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had one machine that has gone out on loan during repairs and it now has several orphaned User folders under Documents & Settings, which did not have security set on them, have been emptied, but I would like to cleanup the mess. Logged in as Administrator and in safe mode I cannot delete these. I think this is one of those naming issues where the real name is not what's showing?? something like that. how do I ditch these I figure i might could slave it to a Win7 system, take over the files, then delete. that's a lotta work so if there's a quick way, that's better

Everybody can see Laptop in Network Neighborhood
Everybody can see the shares on Laptop -- and everybody sees the same list of shares
Everybody can browse Laptop's C-drive and E-Drive.
No one can browse either Laptop's main user's My Documents or the general Shared Documents folders.

I have a 120GB (split into 40GB/80GB partition), and 2 250GB HDDs. So it tells me I have a previous version of Windows installed. I say format that (I was on the phone to a friend while doing this, so I wasn't paying much attention, but I've done this hundreds of times before), then "Storage 2 (E Formatting"...I pulled out the power supply in haste, but it was to late, logged into Windows, and gone 250GB of files that would take years to recover, if they are even recoverable... and I just realised all my web development work was on the drive as well... I have back ups but not everything is backed up...I only did a quick format, so I don't know if that makes it easier to recover but I need a good, reliable, and possibly free program to get my stuff back.
microsofts website states that on your old machine if you un-install the drive before removing it, you should then be able to move it over to the new computer and everything should be dandy, now unfortunatly ive set up the new computer and the old computer isnt working for some reason and im not sure what happend along the way but thats another matter altogether.
my question is, is it possible for me to recover the information on this disk? xp is currently asking me to format the disk whenever i try to access it.
PartitionMagic and DiskManagement in XP both show the drive and its full amount of space but unfortunatly it doenst show up any partitions, it is however listed in PartitionMagic as a "dynamic disk".
I ran Secunia's scan and it found I needed to update Java. Apparently Java installs a new version and the old version remains. I used Revo Uninstaller to remove Java. However, in the last stage where a few more files were being removed, Revo crashed. Now when I look in Windows Add/Remove Programs or Revo - Java is not seen. When I run Secunia - it still says Java's outdated version is on the computer and shows it in the program files. I tried to delete the entire Java folder from the program files, but Windows tells me I cannot delete a .dll file. How do I get the Java completely off this PC so I can update to the "safe version? Oh... I tried System Restore, which never works (even after going thru all the steps to make system restore start working), and, of course, this time it did not work either. I have three computers and System Restore never works on any of them. But that's another rant!
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am going over to a friends house this morning and help them clean out her computer. The only program that I am sure they have is Norton. I am planning to run scandisk, and defrag. Also I will take a look at her startup list and compare it with sysinfo.org/startuplist and remove what I feel comfortable doing. If not installed I will install Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner (but uncheck the registry cleaner). They both no very little about keeping the computer cleaned out.
