View 3 RepliesI am running XP Pro but it seems that with every day my start up takes longer and it takes longer to open documents and attachments. How can I clean up and speed things up? I have quite a bit of free space on the hard drive, I run CCleaner, sophos antivirus, defrag, etc. I try to keep the system clean but am not sure if there is anything I can do to improve the performance.
View 7 Replies View RelatedLately when I have several programs running, I have to go to Windows Task Manager in order to switch between them, because only one thing (the current program) has a space on the task bar showing it is open. I used to have a whole bunch of windows down there and could click on them to maximize. Don't know why this happened or how to fix it.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am using XP on my PC at home and am having a problem with keeping open programs available on my task bar. I can open a website ok but if I need to open a second website the first one no longer appears accessible on the task bar. The only way I can get back to website #1 is by using the back arrow. Also if I close the second website the first one closes at the same time. I frequently need to go between two or more websites when working online and not having the link available is inconvenient at best. How can I set my computer so that all open websites will appear on the taskbar?

View 2 Replies View RelatedComputer runs on Windows XP Home SP2. Since the last two or three monthly Window updates, that yellow shield icon - the Windows Update icon - no longer shows up in the system tray. I tried to locate it under "previous elements" (I'm translating from German since my computer language is in German), but it's not there. I only know when Window updates have been downloaded when I want to shut down the computer and I have the option to either first install the updates, after which the computer will shut down automatically, or shut down the computer without installing the updates.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWindows Task Manager shows my CPU usage at 50% when my computer is idle. The only process it shows running is the last one on the list "System Idle Pr..." What is going on here? Also sometimes Windows won't shut down the normal way and I have to just turn the power off. Could these problems be related?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently put my hard drive back into my laptop that had been damaged. While the laptop was being repaired I used an enclosure to access my data and changed the permissions on it several times and I think that may be part of my problem. When I first put it in I could access everything okay, but first I had to change my permissions which I did. After that I tried installing new software (itunes) and it said I didn't have proper access, so I went in and messed with the permissions again. Now after I log on I'm greeting with a black screen. I can access the task manager, but nothing else
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy latest reformat of XP Home SP2 and loading of all my programs (Word was installed through MS Works 6.0) and all latest updates has somehow caused the clock to now show the day of the week in the taskbar, under the clock. Have tried reducing size of the Task Bar -- have checked customize under TaskBar settings, but it doesn't include anything obviously jumping out at me and saying "day of week".

View 8 Replies View RelatedHas there been a new Windows update that locks the text and document files from people in other accounts from opening them? When I place a text or document file from my account into any other account, they cannot open them as they used to be able to. The last file that I can open between accounts was created on 11/29/2006.This is not just limited to Microsoft Word for Windows, but for files made in Excel, WordPad, and NotePad txt files as well. I think it should be easy to check, for it's probably a recent Windows Update, but the trouble is that I recently had to format my hard drive and start over, so I don't know which of the 200 or so it is that I had to download. I am hoping that all I need to do is to uninstall it.If this was an Windows Update, then I need to uninstall it because I need to be able to send people files and have them be able to read them. The exact error message for a document created in Word is: "Word cannot open the document: User does not have access privileges (C:...MyDocuments(name of file).doc)".I am running Windows XP Professional on a home made computer with 1024 MB RAM, and an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor.

How do I find out what programs are running other than using Task Manager which shows no programs running?
View 14 Replies View RelatedMy browsers, particularly IE (6) dont always respond when I try to open them. With IE about half the time when I click the icon nothing happens. If a then check task manager IE is indeed running and taking up about 14K of memory, but it never opens. If I try opening it again another instance will just open under task manager and nothing will show up. Now if I end all the IE processes in there and then start IE again it'll be fine. But I need to get this fixed.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using winXP and have been for a while without problems. In an instant, while online, doing a file transfer my PC manfested the following problems:
1. Booting up takes alot longer now and once im at the login screen it takes an even greater amount of time to load my profile. it sticks at the loading personal settings message for a while, then once it gets past there it takes a few minutes to load my desktop.
2. I can not open some programs like Media Player. The Error ' can not perform operation-memory too low' appears. In addition i can not access any system tools or programs eg. Help and Support
My data files seem to be fine along with all the other non-system related content on my computer.
3. I can not open my internet connection. It seems to be stuck in connected state even after restarting my computer.(I use a dial-up)
To try and solve ths i tried to get into my network places and modems in the control panel but when i tried i got error messages -something to do with 'network places and telephony services may not be activated, activate them and try again.'Another intersesting issue is that my taskbar has changed and looks like a windows 2000 taskbar now and functions slightly differntly than before. In fact my whole OS looks a bit differnt now.
When I choose to minimize anything on my desktop it used to drop down to the single click startup bar area and wait to be recalled. Now, when I minmize anything, the only way I can recall it is to open Windows Task Manager and and launch it from there.

View 12 Replies View RelatedMy Windows XP (Home Edition) Internet explorer (ver 6.x) does not launch. In addition any process that requires explorer will not launch. This includes "My Documents", "Control Panel", and of course Internet Explorer. When I click My Documents, it thinks about it, then all the icons on the desktop disappear for a moment and all that I have is the background image. Then the icons return and Explorer does not open. The error message I get indicates that there is a problem with the ole32.dll file. I’ve run a virus scan and
spyware scan with no luck.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I go to my documents the document is listed there but when I click to open it, it won't load. It will however load if I am already in the program which usually opens it. Beside them it says SIG file, which I have no idea what that means. Also, it is just a blank box beside the file name (in my documents list) when usually there is a mini icon showing which program will work to open it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter a recent major cleanup, Windows XP's special folders will not open properly when I double-click them on the desktop. I get a "File does not have a program associated with it ..." error instead. I can still access the folders by rightclick and selecting 'Explore', I just can't double-click from the desktop. it seems that Window's special folders (i.e. My Documents, My Computer, Control panel and the Recycle Bin), are not really files or true folders - they are called 'Special folders'. Also, the problem is self-induced and not the result of a virus or spyware issue - I have done it to myself. Too bad I don't have a recent registry backup or System Restore point I can use.So, my question is how to I fuss with the default associations on the 'Special folders'?

I thought I would run scanner but apparently that command does not work.
