I am using Windows XP. When I download certain things to the desktop, they don't actually save to the Desktop, but rather to a folder called "Recent." When I search for these files using the Windows search tool, I can find them, but I don't know how to (a) open the "Recent" folder or (b) re-route it so they actually download to the desktop.

View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter downloading the most recent firewall update to Mcafee personal firewall plus the computer kicked me out and rebooted. I contacted McAfee support and was - after numerous attempts - able to load their latest DAT file on the system and run a DOS scan which took 55 minutes. It found at least one trojan (the Multidropper .F trojan). I thought this would solve the problem. No. Went into SAFE MODE and was able to remove Personal Firewall. Rebooted the sytem. Bam! Once my desktop loaded, the computer rebooted again. McAfee's Security Center is still on my system, but the firewall has been uninstalled. The Computer is still rebooting continuously. Even SAFE mode takes forever to boot up. Before I take the computer into the local PC shop what can I do

Also I went to the registry and did the following under and in the entry NoRecentDocs History put the value to 0 and it still would work. I don't think I have the Tweak UI program on my Machine, I did not see it in my control panel, still I removed a app. called Power Toys for win, having this still no effect on the situation

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am constantly finding my internet folders, temp folders, recent items and other folders filled with junk links which are taking up quite a bit of space on the drive.Before I did a complete rebuild, I managed to dump over a gigabyte of junk and obsolete files from the drive, and all this logging stuff just gets on

I downloaded Sony Vegas Movie Studio and clicked the installer as I would normally do with any program I would download and a window comes up telling me that my Temp folder (CDocuments and Settings/"name"/Local Settings/Temp) is write protected. I can't do anything >.< I right clicked the Temp folder and unchecked 'Read Only' and applied it, right clicked it again, went back to properties to see if it worked and the box is rechecked again I'm stumped.

I tried going back but it's still the same thing. So I went to my desktop and clicked on some other older PDF file I had and I don't get know error message or anything, it doesn't open.

When I try to unzip a zip file winzip reports an error. I have ran ScanDisk on my hard drive and there are no errors, I have also swaped out my IDE cable and that didnt help. I also installed a new network card and different Ram, I still get the same errors on almost all my downloads.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe registry on one of my computers is corrupt and if I try to copy the files from the WindowsRepair folder using the windows system repair tool, I'm told the files cannot be found. One possible solution I thought of is using the registry files from my other computer running Windows XP. I don't even know if this is possible, but if it is, how can I transfer the files. I would put them on a CD but the CD drive won't open when the system repair tool is running, and they're too big to fit on a floppy disk, even one at a time (the system and software files are both over 2mb.)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI made a mistake when I moved into a house that doesn’t have high speed Internet. I signed up for netzero to get me through the months that I will not have high speed. I installed their software then their software downloaded some more software that is still locking my computer up on occasion, even after I have uninstalled their software. It doesn't lock it up totally it just doesn't let me run any other programs and it doesn't let me log off (even through CTRL ALT DEL). This virus i driving me crazy, my flash usb create folders that i didn't create by my self and i can't delete the folder's even the folder's i create by my self. i did a virus scan today and had to delete 5 files which are infected with something called Trojan. i cannt really remember all the file names, but im sure 2 of them called rundll32.exe and notepad.exe.now i cant open anything. whatever i click on, it will show up with a big error sign, saying cant find the perspective exe. eg. if i open explorer, it will say it cannt find explorer.exe.

I have used it for many years in Windows 98 without problems, both in my home and at work. Recently my office updated the OS system from 98 to Windows XP2 Professional edition. The "Find it" program does not work with the Windows XP2. I have 2 laptops with Windows XP Home edition. "Find It" works fine in those laptops. TheWindowsXP search program is not as good as "Find It." Can anyone suggest how I might be able to get "Find It" to work with XP2 Professional Edition?

I tried booting in safe mode and that worked fine a minute ago, but now I am trying safe mode again and it hangs at a file called Mup.sys and will not proceed with the boot.

Each time I open "my recent documents" from the Start menu and delete an item, the whole list closes and I have to open again, and go through that each time for multiple deletes. View 3 Replies View Relatedfirst off, never under any circumstances use a laptop in a machine shop to listen to music. ever. after a fall off a mill and onto the floor hdd failed. installed new one, put xp pro on it, began to get the updates and such from gateways website, first off, it still has no network connections other than my sprint air card, and my 1394 port. so i am missing my local network and wireless network. second massive problem, is have no sound. under the sounds and audio devices window in the volume tab, it says no audio device. under device manager it says audio codecs and legacy audio drivers (twice) none have any error. when i clicked on the troubleshooting tab it gave the question of weather the the volume was muted, i clicked on volume link it brought up an error stating no mixing devices were found.

How do you clear the list of recent files? My wife is copying some old audio cassettes to CD. When she is done with each cassette, she deletes the files from the computer but they still show up on the files menu. This bothers the heck out of her so she is bothering the heck out of me to get rid of the file listing.

Open your registry and find the key below.
Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called 'NoRecentDocsHistory' set the value to equal '1' to enable the restriction.
Exit your registry, you may need to restart for the changes to take effect.
My wife has a new notebook with Win XP Pro (SP2). I'd like to add My Recent Documents to the Start Menu, but I've looked everywhere, and I can't find that option.
