Stop Logging Of History - Recent Items Internet Files Taking Space
Dec 16, 2004
I am constantly finding my internet folders, temp folders, recent items and other folders filled with junk links which are taking up quite a bit of space on the drive. Before I did a complete rebuild, I managed to dump over a gigabyte of junk and obsolete files from the drive, and all this logging stuff just gets on
my nerves.

Internet Explorer has a couple of history items that will not go away when i delete my history. it is really bad cause when i start my browser it starts to open a whole bunch of sites that i dont like. ive ran my alwarebytes and my hjt. and it still dont go away.does it really matter if i run a full scan on alwarebytes? if i cant get this stuff to go away i may have to reformat.

Normally when you open or access a document or file it is added to the list of recent documents on the Start Menu. This tweak will stop files from being added to the list.
Open your registry and find the key below.
Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called 'NoRecentDocsHistory' set the value to equal '1' to enable the restriction.
Exit your registry, you may need to restart for the changes to take effect.

which files/programs take up the most space on your computer? I've removed all of the unnecessary programs that I don't need or use or at least the one's that have an uninstall program or if I'm able to remove them from the control panel. What about .xls, .doc, .ppt, .mp3, .wav, etc? I have Windows 2000 Professional, Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and MS Office 2003.

im trying to customize Windows XP Pro to my liking very strictly and for some reason i just cannot delete the History and Temporary Internet Files folder, i 100% do not want them there but if i try delete them it comes up with History is a Windows system folder and is required for Windows to run properly. It cannot be deleted.iv'e tried booting into Linux and deleting it off their but when i booted back into windows it replaced them again, i also logged in as the SYSTEM user and deleted them but to no avail. I seriously do not want them folders their, and to my knowledge they ARE NOT required for windows to run properly.

What are the recommendations for "Temporary Internet Files".In large environments should we default the size limit? The default settings is normally huge as disk drives are so big.Users end up with 10s of thousands of files in this folder than can take 20 minutes to clean out. Many IE issues are also resolved by deleting temp internet files. We default the setting "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" on all systems but this does not seem to always delete everything.

1. Goto > Start > Run2. Type regedit - click ok3. Navigate to - HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMediaPlayerPlayerRecentFileList4. Look at the window panel on the right - delete all that you wish removed from media player recent list5. Right click on RecentFileList and goto Permissions..6. Check the deny access box for any account on the machine. This should make it so nobody on the machine has read/write accesss to recent file list so it will never save any media played in this folder. WMP works fine with this.

I have a 5Gb partition purely for XP Pro. Its got to the stage now where that partition is completely full. I've tried clearing temp. internet files etc as the ballon suggests (baloon tells me I'm running out of space on that partition), but this only takes off a few hundred Mb at best, and the extra space is soon filled again. It then suggests removing windows components that aren't used. To be honest, there's very little to remove in here as most things aren't installed. I've had a look through a lot of folders on that partition to seeif there's much I can remove, but I haven't found much to clear out.Han anyone suggest why there is now so much room taken by XP Pro? When I first installed it, it took up about a Gb (I think), and also anyone think of what files I could look to removing?

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but my XP switches to the 'switch user' setting every time the screen saver comes on. It gets really annoying so I wondered if anyone could tell me how to turn it off.

I have a Windows XP with an 80Gig Hard Drive, 75Gigs of which are being used. What is the easiest and clearest way to see what is taking up so much space? I have 3 users on the computer. Once I find out what is taking up the space, I'd like to "archive" the media to an external hard drive then delete it from the C Drive. Does that make sense?

I am using Windows XP. When I download certain things to the desktop, they don't actually save to the Desktop, but rather to a folder called "Recent." When I search for these files using the Windows search tool, I can find them, but I don't know how to (a) open the "Recent" folder or (b) re-route it so they actually download to the desktop.

Windows is taking 13GB of the 20GB space on my hard drive. I think this is the source of my slow processing and inability to burn DVDs.

I also am having an issue with 100% of CPU usage being used. I have years of backups from using Registry First Aid and wondered if I can delete these. Maybe I should not have it checked to create a back up each time it is run? Also should I run a hijack this report because of CPU usage or are they even related. If someone could send me a link to a list of programs that need to be running maybe I can shut some of them down.

is there a way i can look up what sites i've been to online within the last few days? i saw a video on Internet that i flagged and i want to be sure it gets deleted - actually, it needs something more than just being pulled from Internet, it needs police involvement. i think. i'm so worried about what i saw that i've been up all night trying to retrace my steps, no luck. i can't remember what search i used that led me to the video so i have to rely on something on my computer that'll get me back there.

Internet Explorer keeps track of each URL that you type in the address bar as a convenience to save you from typing the next time that you visit that site. However, any user that uses your computer can find out what addresses you typed in as well so some may be interested in clearing the address bar addresses. Just clearing the browser history will not do this as a registry modification is needed

So, what I want to do is look and see if I can find into our computers and view who, what, when & where. without going to the History icon in Internet Explorer, what can I do. I already baught an application that would print logs, but not info logged before I downloaded the app.

I correct that deleted Recycle Bin files still remain unseen on the hard drive? If so, is there any way of removing the deleted "Recycle Bin" items without affecting anything else on the Hard Disk? My original and now #2 computer has a very small Hard Disk (15 GB). I have cleaned out everything but the OS and installed programs. I would like to remove the one GB of My Documents files I put into the Recycle Bin and then further deleted from there, if indeed they are still resident on the Hard Disk. My intent is to hopefully increase performance of that machine, which also has a very slow processor and only 190 MB RAM. Right now the OS and programs occupy one-half of the Hard Disk. I am running "XP Home" on that computer. I will only use C #2 for reaching the Internet should my #1 computer "go down. (I would be lost without that daily exercise!) C #1 is fully backed up weekly to an external Hard Disk.

I recently did a google search and when I entered one of the websites a prompt script
download appeared, worried about what it was doing I unplugged the computer and rebooted. I started up IE and when I entered the search menu under the history toolbar the internet shortcut "what I searched" - google search could not be deleted I even ran a history cleaner and yet it was the only thing that remained in the history toolbar under the search menu.

Okay this is driving me nuts. I know about adding a key to the registry as described
here:http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1202672,00.asp
What it doesn't tell you is if you DO have something that says DWORD in the registry.
I'm not sure if I should add NoLowDiskSpaceChecks or not

Every time I'm on the internet svchost.exe takes up half my CPU. I can't browse, I have to constantly end svchost.exe so that I can sluggishly switch pages then in seconds it pops back again. Svchost.exe is somehow connected to my internet connection because i need it to use the internet yet its not letting me, its really frustrating, I've been beating my face on my desk because i cant figure out whats wrong. I've scanned my computer with AVG, malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, and Ad-aware.

Most of the time my desktop pc runs fine, but about once a week when I click on a link or a page is loading in IE the system will virtually freeze.I don't do a lot of surfing (it's a work computer) so I don't venture into dangerous territory (sites with popups and redirects etc). I also keep my cache and cookies pretty clean, so it's not because that gets clogged up. The sites that cause the problem don't seem to have
anything in common and are work related or news related sites. I also DON'T have any 3rd party toolbars installed and DO have all the latest updates to XP Professional. When the lockup occurs, if I do Ctrl-Alt-Del and open the Task Manager (this can take a minute or 2 to load because of the problem) I can see the Internet Explorer is taking 98/99% of the cpu usage. I can try to cancel IE, but it won't cancel. I can't click on anything in the IE window because it's locked up. If I try to switch to a different open window, that could take from 2-4 minutes to refresh. I tried to lower
the priority of IE in the Task Manager, but this makes no difference.

In all cases, it is taking very very long, if at all, for any of the accounts to come up. That is, the icon and account name stay on the screen and the window behind the account never appears.. If the window behind the account does appear, visuscan may or may not complete startup (after minutes). If it does, aim.exe does not. I also have Radio.netscape
