I have a Windows XP with an 80Gig Hard Drive, 75Gigs of which are being used. What is the easiest and clearest way to see what is taking up so much space? I have 3 users on the computer. Once I find out what is taking up the space, I'd like to "archive" the media to an external hard drive then delete it from the C Drive. Does that make sense?
View 5 RepliesI have a 5Gb partition purely for XP Pro. Its got to the stage now where that partition is completely full. I've tried clearing temp. internet files etc as the ballon suggests (baloon tells me I'm running out of space on that partition), but this only takes off a few hundred Mb at best, and the extra space is soon filled again.It then suggests removing windows components that aren't used. To be honest, there's very little to remove in here as most things aren't installed. I've had a look through a lot of folders on that partition to seeif there's much I can remove, but I haven't found much to clear out.Han anyone suggest why there is now so much room taken by XP Pro? When I first installed it, it took up about a Gb (I think), and also anyone think of what files I could look to removing?

View 19 Replies View Relatedi had to system restore and when i came back all my files where gone but i still ahd the same hard disk space left and then i ran my diskk defragmentor and i found some files that i had that are now fragmented and still takeing up large parts of my memory here is what the Analysis report for the defragmentor said and when i go in to USERDATA to try delte some files it says USERDATA is not assable ,acces is denied and i tryed goin in it on safe mode and im administator on my computer so idk y it wont let me in plase help i only got 4% disk space left and when i click run dick defragmentor it says i need 15% space to run efectively sould i still run it and c what happens?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am constantly finding my internet folders, temp folders, recent items and other folders filled with junk links which are taking up quite a bit of space on the drive.Before I did a complete rebuild, I managed to dump over a gigabyte of junk and obsolete files from the drive, and all this logging stuff just gets on
my nerves.
All you have to do is look at the links tool bar and click on the link you want to add, then drag it onto the start menu. Bam! It's as simple as that;p.
View 9 Replies View Relatedeasiest way i can capture video's off my DV Camcorder into windows movie marker and if i can, have it automatically split the clips up into 4.2 gig sized movies..(the reason being i have a movie thats 8 or 10 gigs long, and i want to cut it into slices that will fit just right onto a dvdr) there is a check box when your recording the movie that says "make clips when finished" or something like that and it just seems to split my movie in half i think? i'm not really sure...Also does WMM copy the information DIRECTLY from the tape digitally to the computer so what i have is an EXACT copy of what was on the camcorder? (i.e. the FPS and screen size and image quality are the EXACT SAME? no gen loss?)..

I've noticed that once defraged since a few weeks ago I HAVE GONE from over 70% free space down to only under 40%....I don't run any major software at the moment BUTDO use the internet on ADSL most days BUT not to any great extent. View 4 Replies View Relatedi wanted to copy a cd image 4.18GB ISO format from partition F: NTFS 9GB free to partition D: (FAT32 12GB free space) and windows gives me that crap there is not enough space and i should do a disk clean up.
I made a disk clean up to partition D: and there was 3GB of system restore files!!! maybe coz i deleted 6GB earlier anyway i deleted the system restore files
Only NTFS partions can have files with file size more than 4GB..i hope theres nothing wrong with my windows or my hard disk..and i wanna know if theres a way to move that ISO image..thanx in advance.
I've noticed sometimes that the Free Space on my harddrives won't reflect changes I've made. For example, on my 28.6gb F: drive, I had about 586mb free. I just deleted a video file of about 700 mb, so it should be up to about 1.2 gb. Oddly enough, its still at 586mb.

Much to my dismay I cannot figure out why this would occur. We did make recovery disks and removed our partition some weeks ago. It seems our C drive is using up space without any explanation. Well now, when I go to reinstall, it will not automatically start so I clicked on my computer and dvd-rw Drive (E and there are no files, in fact it states that my my file system is CDFS and the CDA Default - Full It says all space used 672 MB and Free Space 0 Bytes

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using an old Compaq Presario v2630US with WinXP SP2 running on it. Recently, I had trouble playing a .MOD file; this was when i didn't know i could just change the extension to .mpg, so I refreshed the codecs on my system. After that, explorer would freeze up every time i opened a folder with .avi files. So i uninstalled the codecs, didn't help, so disabled the thumbnail generation option in the registry. that helped somewhat. Explorer itself doesn't freeze up as much, but it still takes up humongous amounts of memory (upto 300 megs on a machine with 1 gig of RAM).

View 14 Replies View RelatedThis is not my pc, but my parents'. It is a Compaq Presario. It has a P4 3.06Ghz cpu, 1GB of ram, and runs XP Home SP2. I remember when my parents first got the pc it was very fast and stable, now however they complain of two problems.Firstly it is really slow, especially if your mouse pointer hovers over the taskbar or if you attempt to do most things with Explorer, like right-clicking. Sometimes this can lock the pc up for minutes at a time. The second problem is that it doesn't shut down no matter how long you leave it. The best it manages to do is remove power from the keyboard and mouse, and then only occasionally.I Have investigated the problems with the speed of the pc, and the problem seems to be to do with the system process. Task manager reports this process as using anywhere between 40% and 99% of the CPU all the time.My actions thus far have been to do a complete sweep with anti-spamware and ant-virus, and they didn't find anything. Next I ran process explorer, which showed that the system was using about 50% on deferred procedure calls, 20% on hardware interrupts, and 30% on the System process itself. Upon looking at the threads running in the System process, I discovered that the thread ACPI.sys+0x10b10using the entire 30%.
I must admit I don't really understand what ACPI is, but an internet search revealed it to be associated with pcs being unable to propperly shut down. For this reason I am now assuming that the two problems (unable to sut down and running very slow) are related. This is just an uneducated guess however.So can anybody suggest what the problem might be? Or how I might solve it?If you need any information that I have forgotten, I will gladly provide it.
I am using a Dell D610 laptop, Windows XP.I have a 40GB hard drive.I have several co-workers with the exact same machine.My Windows folder is over 21GB large and I am running low on hard drive space. My coworkers' Windows folders are all between 3 and 4GB. To my knowledge, I have not installed/downloaded anything different than my coworkers.I have checked the sizes of all the sub folders within the Windows folder, but none of them are unusual in size and they in no way add up to 21GB.I have also reduced my restore points and recycle bin size.There seems to be something invisible in the Windows folder taking up over 15GB of hard drive space.I contacted my corporate tech support team and they said get a bigger hard drive.That might give me more space, but it doesn't explain the 15GB of wasted hard drive!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI don't get it. the more i go on, the more and more disk space seems to vanish into thin air. xp usually takes a couple of gigs up on the hard disk, right? maybe 5 gigs at the very most. i've got 8 gigs taken up by videos in one folder. the programs i've got installed are negligable. the program files folder is 500mb. and yet my disk only has 20 gigs spare on a 40 gig hard disk. i've looked in every folder on the hard disk and i simply can't find any folders with anything of any great size in it. i've defragged the hard drive.

In those two years, I had to re-install Windows XP and everything else on my computer...for reasons unknown...I recently performed a New Installation of Windows XP on my computer. I don't have alot of things installed on my computer. The total space all the programs in my Add and Remove programs file takes up is only 1GB. Since I had to start over and re-install everything and my programs only add up to 1GB, Shouldn't I have more free space ?
how to expand the disk space that I have. The primary C drive has the OS on it and it is only about 14GB, and my entire disk is about 50GB, the unallocated space is about 34 GB. I have tried to expand the primary partition unsuccessfully. Do I have to reload the entire OS ? I do not have the origional disk to reload the OS. It is a sony PCG-CRT160 computer with 500 mb ram and approximately a 50 GB primary drive that was partitioned when I got it.

I can't browse, I have to constantly end svchost.exe so that I can sluggishly switch pages then in seconds it pops back again. Svchost.exe is somehow connected to my internet connection because i need it to use the internet yet its not letting me, its really frustrating, I've been beating my face on my desk because i cant figure out whats wrong. I've scanned my computer with AVG, malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, and Ad-aware.
View 3 Replies View RelatedHaving a major problem with svchost.exe. Everytime I restart the computer an instance of svchost.exe uses a new PID and takes up 95-100% of cpu. I have to find the instance and then "end the process" to use the computer. I have scanned with PCtools antivirus, PCtools spyware, AVG antivirus, Pctools maestro, registry booster 2. All spyware and malware have been removed according to those programs. Registry has been cleaned, defragged and compressed. Still have the same problem.
My Windows Explorer is taking to long before it closes, about 5 seconds or higher. This happens all the time even if my pc doesn't have any activity. I noticed that when I click the close button, my pc doesn't respond at once. Same with my Intenet Explorer, but not to other windows.
