Svchost.exe Taking 100% Of Cpu: System Very Slow?
Oct 28, 2007
Having a major problem with svchost.exe. Everytime I restart the computer an instance of svchost.exe uses a new PID and takes up 95-100% of cpu. I have to find the instance and then "end the process" to use the computer. I have scanned with PCtools antivirus, PCtools spyware, AVG antivirus, Pctools maestro, registry booster 2. All spyware and malware have been removed according to those programs. Registry has been cleaned, defragged and compressed. Still have the same problem.

computer has been lagging like crazy so opened up task manager to see what was taking up my memory and cpu. i didn't see anything but then i noticed i had like 6 svchost.exe processes running. i looked it up and microsoft stated that svchost can run multiple times at once. the problem is one of them is taking up like 50,000 KB more memory than any of the others and this particular is also taking up a crapload of my cpu off and on as well

Every time I'm on the internet svchost.exe takes up half my CPU. I can't browse, I have to constantly end svchost.exe so that I can sluggishly switch pages then in seconds it pops back again. Svchost.exe is somehow connected to my internet connection because i need it to use the internet yet its not letting me, its really frustrating, I've been beating my face on my desk because i cant figure out whats wrong. I've scanned my computer with AVG, malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, and Ad-aware.

So whenever i start up the computer once it hits the Blue Welcome Xp screen it will stay there for atleast 30sec, i mean my mouse shows and i can move it but im just waitin there until it fully loads. Once it goes to the main screen everythin else loads with no problem. So, i have run many malware/spyware programs and nothing.

Gateway Pentium 3, 700 mhz - 256mb ram, 20gb hard drive.Until a few weeks ago my system booted up fine. Now it boots up to my windows desktop and then takes 20 minutes minimum to complete start up. The SVCHOST.exe hogs 99% of the CPU so nothing happens until it has completed its tasks.I have tried starting it without the start up items and this has no effect. I have cleaned it, defragged it, virus checked it, tuned it.

Something weird has been happening on my computer. It's been pretty slow to start up (despite limiting startup programs in the msconfig), and when starting up, before my desktop fully loads, it comes up with a message saying "Personalizing settings for C:Program FilesCommon Filesmscd.exe". Sometimes it will stick there and not finish starting up, other times it sits there for a couple of minutes, then starts up ok, but slowly.
I also have had issues with browser history getting wiped out what seems like every few hours even though the internet settings are proper. The Google toolbar will keep track of forms info, but I'm getting logged out of every site, and the history is gone. SuperAntiSpyware Pro has found numerous entries for unclassified svchost.exe, and has been blocking them, but more keep popping up. It seems like every time I lose the browser history and run SAS Pro, another unclassified svchost.exe is found.
What can I do to fix this?

I NEED urgent help, not THIS computer but the person I live with's computer is EXTREMELY slow, things take up to 10-20 minutes to open sometimes, it takes at least 15 minutes to start up or shut down, everything lags, we've tried EVERYTHING, virus scanning, spyware, malware, cleaning the registry, defraging the registry and harddrive, cleaning up, EVERYTHING, anytime you shut down after applying some sort of setting it says it's saving the settings and then you start it back up and it acts like it never saved it, it goes back to the OLD CRAPPY settings, puts every error back on that the program found, recently the boot.ini has become corrupt or invalid, there are two hard drives with plenty of space and we've had this problem for a couple of years! We can't figure out what to do, we both have the same computer, bought it at the same time, mine runs like a charm but their's does not at all, the cpu usage is sky high when you aren't doing anything and sometimes it is 0% when you ARE doing stuff. There is about 10 or more svchost.exe's running, two under a seperate username and none of which we can stop. There are diagnostic lights on the back BUT anytime there is anything wrong with the lights we look in the manual and on the offical website and NO ONE HAS THE LIGHT COMBONATION THAT WE DO!! It's a Dell Dimension 2400, right now it has both 512MB and a 128MB RAM memory stick, we can't upgrade the memory or it fails and starts beeping, Windows XP Home Edition,

One of our XP computers runs automated updates for Windows. However the last few days, there have been 10 updates installing, and the 3rd update is taking hours upon hours to install. I have never seen anything like that before. Is this normal? How would I go about approaching this? It will more than likely update itself later today

I am posting a computer problem of "The slowest computer of all"? It takes 5 to 6 minutes to boot and then takes on some dialog boxes when clicking 7 seconds to activate, (Show on Screen) and on others, takes 14 to 21 seconds to activate? Sometime you even see the searching flashlite on the screen when you click. The same thing happens with the right click context menu. This computer is a HP a430n running a AMD Athlon(B) XP 3200+ running at 2.20 GHz. It has 1Gig of ram, a GeForce4 MX440 (Raven) AGP 8x graphic card,Integrated AC97 audio and a Maxtor 250Gig hard drive.

Our family computer is running like a slug. It takes forever to startup and open programs and the hard drive activity light is always on. It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. I have another hard drive that is in a removable tray that I use, and that has all the same settings and everything, but that one is using a fraction of the RAM and runs pretty good!

Hardware: Compaq Presario x1000, Win XP Home SP1, 1.4 Ghz, 512 Ram.
Symptom: Lsass.exe is using about 60%, and svchost.exe is using about 40% (they move around up and down but are always using 100% together). Recently the computer semi died (after the login screen it would blue screen). I repaired to OS (the reinstall option for windows that leaves data and programs intact). Have chkdsk the HD (found and repaired errors), ran a defrag, ran diagnostics on the HD and RAM (all clean), and the computer still moves at a crawl. I've found a lot of articles about LSass.exe causing problems with win 2k domain controllers, but this is not win 2k, is not a domain controller, and is in fact not even on a domain. SVCHOST.EXE / SYSTEM is duplicated in running processes , and it's using all my CPU usage on startup/logon (this process takes several minutes).Never mind the same process for 'local service', and 'network service'. They don't consume CPU usage - see attached. This started when I upgraded to Defender, from MS Antispyware. To upgrade, I had to authenticate the OS , install SP 2 , then install the new app . Took over an hour I noticed too many new things changing in the appearance (and don't like Defender), so I did a sys restore for the day before the install. No problems at all, 'til the next day. Slow boot, slow authentication for logon, etc.

This is not my pc, but my parents'. It is a Compaq Presario. It has a P4 3.06Ghz cpu, 1GB of ram, and runs XP Home SP2. I remember when my parents first got the pc it was very fast and stable, now however they complain of two problems.Firstly it is really slow, especially if your mouse pointer hovers over the taskbar or if you attempt to do most things with Explorer, like right-clicking. Sometimes this can lock the pc up for minutes at a time. The second problem is that it doesn't shut down no matter how long you leave it. The best it manages to do is remove power from the keyboard and mouse, and then only occasionally.I Have investigated the problems with the speed of the pc, and the problem seems to be to do with the system process. Task manager reports this process as using anywhere between 40% and 99% of the CPU all the time.My actions thus far have been to do a complete sweep with anti-spamware and ant-virus, and they didn't find anything. Next I ran process explorer, which showed that the system was using about 50% on deferred procedure calls, 20% on hardware interrupts, and 30% on the System process itself. Upon looking at the threads running in the System process, I discovered that the thread ACPI.sys+0x10b10using the entire 30%.
I must admit I don't really understand what ACPI is, but an internet search revealed it to be associated with pcs being unable to propperly shut down. For this reason I am now assuming that the two problems (unable to sut down and running very slow) are related. This is just an uneducated guess however. So can anybody suggest what the problem might be? Or how I might solve it?If you need any information that I have forgotten, I will gladly provide it.

As my system is running very slow, I decided to look for the source of the problem. While looking at the system information details I noticed five processes under the name "svchost.exe" with the label "not available for all the information tabs (Path, Min working set, max working set, version, size) The same problem with a process called wmiprvse.exe. Please can you tell what is that and if this is a virus, worm or malware or is only a system process?
I have other for processes "svchost.exe" with the path determined "C:windowssystem 32svchost.exe. Is there any difference? I scaned my computer several time just yesterday.

my computer is running at 100% CPU almost all the time, erratically. I am SO frustrated-- this has happened to me twice before, and I could not figure it out, so I just reinstalled fresh copies of Windows each time.It runs fine for a while, then all of a sudden this same problem comes back. I am sick of having to reinstall all of my programs, and was hoping that maybe someone else was having a similar problem so I wouldn't have to reinstall everything again.

pc was very stable until I introduced new replacement tv card After a system freeze caused by a new pinnacle tv tuner I had to do a hard reset ( press power button for 4 secs ) When the system rebooted it stuck on the post screen, it auto detects my hardware and then stops. After about half an hour it moves on to the next bios screen (which would normally only show up for a second or two during boot up) and then stayed on that screen for 16 - 24 hours.I gave up, left it running & went to sleep (still displaying the same screen in the morning) & then work the next day. I came home from work to find the windows welcome screen on my monitor!!?? But on rebooting it takes nearly 24 hours to start up
