One of our XP computers runs automated updates for Windows. However the last few days, there have been 10 updates installing, and the 3rd update is taking hours upon hours to install. I have never seen anything like that before.Is this normal? How would I go about approaching this? It will more than likely update itself later today
View 1 Repliespc was very stable until I introduced new replacement tv card After a system freeze caused by a new pinnacle tv tuner I had to do a hard reset ( press power button for 4 secs ) When the system rebooted it stuck on the post screen, it auto detects my hardware and then stops.After about half an hour it moves on to the next bios screen (which would normally only show up for a second or two during boot up) and then stayed on that screen for 16 - 24 hours.I gave up, left it running & went to sleep (still displaying the same screen in the morning) & then work the next day. I came home from work to find the windows welcome screen on my monitor!!?? But on rebooting it takes nearly 24 hours to start up
View 2 Replies View RelatedTired of being constantly nagged by reboot requests after installing XP updates I went to the wsindows update folder in Group Policy and enabled the "No automatic restart for scheduled updates" option, clicked apply and forgot about it. Untill my computer installed the automatic update for .Netframework, when, without any warning it went into reboot mode causing me to completely lose the data I was working on. The only other option in the update folder is to delay the restart but as this only allows you to stretch it to a max of 30 minutes it's not much help.

It is to the point where it is installing files and I can see that each individual file (dll's, exe's, etc.) takes about 30-90 seconds to install! It has been installing like this for many hours now - almost half a day. There is no option to cancel and roll back the installation (buttons are all grayed out), so I'm just going to patiently wait for it to end.Does anyone know why this would happen?
xp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

It seemed, with my last computer, the updates created more problems than they were worth. Does anyone have an opinion on how important it is to get these updates or am I just as well off not receiving them? View 6 Replies View RelatedIve got some burning software by the name of MySonicDVD on the PC but when trying to load it up comes up DMA disabled, well ive done everything to enable it no joy so thought ive got Nero 5 somewhere, dug that out installed it and tried to use that, but it first came up couldnt be used as not correct bundle package (or something similiar), then manage to get sort of somewhere but it didnt like the fact it was an .avi.Now nearly 7 hours to burn a dvd hmmmm, ive not got much of a life but a little bit of one to not waste 7 hours a time.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem where my computer will spend anywhere from 5-10 seconds switching to a different window. It doesn't matter whether it is loaded or not. For instance, I'll have 2 MSN conversations open where I can see both at the same time, and no matter what I'm doing, it will take the same amount of time just to switch over to say "lol".
This is very annoying, because if an error comes up (in any program) that requires opening a new window, it will take 10 seconds to load, and then 10 seconds to respond to me clicking "ok". I am wasting so much time waiting, and it is becoming one of the most aggravating issues I've ever had.
This also applies to clicking on anything on the start bar at any time, minimizing, maximizing, or changing size to any window ever. It doesn't effect anything that happens within any programs itself that aren't window related.
I'm using XP and have 2 gb of RAM.

This problem just started occurring today. Whenever I lock the computer, then unlock it, automatic updates turns itself off and the red alert pops up in the taskbar. Same goes for when I restart the computer.
How can I fix this? I never turned them off and when I try to re-enable them, the security center tells me that it can't re-enable them for some reason, so I have to do it manually. However, the problem persists even after I turn them back on.
Can anyone help me to understand the following behavior I have seen on my system regarding Windows auto updates.On 2 different occasions there have been 20+ recommended windows updates. Initially there were just 2 (Windows Installer 3.1 and KB898461). I noticed there were 20+ after opening Outlook Express for the first time (which auto loaded windows messenger and put itself in the registry to run before my security programs). I changed my settings on outlook express, and messenger (and removed it from the registry). After changing this and rebooting my recommended updates went back down to 2.Again I noticed that my updates jumped back up, after I downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 8.1. I ran ccleaner, checked my registry and rebooted - they were gone again (back down to the same 2 I started with). I am not installing these updates, and am now wondering if I really should be installing them or not. Why are they appearing and then disappearing? How do I know if they are safe? Is it possible that a virus or hijacker could be creating these false updates. or am I being too cautious. I am definitely a bit suspect to lots of behavior on my computer now as I am recovering from a nasty virus that somehow took over my system while I was running Norton Security. I used to do automatic updates, but have now changed it to notify me. I am also running better security progams.

I had problems with validating Windows, but that's solved now. Now, it seems, after about ten or twenty minutes, IE will not work, and I'll have to restart, to do it all over again. I haven't tried installing Mozilla to see if it works too, but I do know that the Automatic updates won't work either. It just hangs and never does anything.

View 9 Replies View RelatedA lot of people already know about Automatic Updates and how to disable them by selecting the appropriate option from within the Automatic Updates tab in My Computer. A lot of you might not realise this, but the Automatic Update service still runs even when you select to disable it here. To turn it off completely and for good do as follows:
1. Go into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
2. Highlight the service called "Automatic Updates". You will know when you have the correct one because you will see a description about it telling you what it does.
3. Right click once highlighted and click stop to terminate the service.
How do I remove an automatic update that's been downloaded but not installed, and block it from being downloaded again in the future? I had installed SP3 for Internet Explorer 6, but it caused problems, interfered with my burners,so I restored to just prior to the installation. But now it's been downloaded again, and although I unchecked it under custom install, I now find it's trying to install it everytime I go to turn off or reboot.

I managed to turn automatic updates on, which told me there were 24 updates due, so i let them download and install, at the end it said updates complete and succeeded (apart from sp3), but straight away the balloon popped up saying there were 24 updates due - exactly the same ones that i had already installed. I checked add/remove programs and realised they hadn't actually installed. I have tried again wth the firewall turned of - didn't work. I have also changed BITS to automatic. View 12 Replies View Relatedwhen I tried to update the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software, my notification/system tray area loses its little "Hide Inactive Icons" functionality and the only way to return things to normal is by performing a System Restore. Obviously I already tried going into Start Menu And Taskbar settings, and it didn't make any difference at all.
I also had an issue where Automatic Updates had to be manually jumpstarted, as in, I'd need to go into the settings, disable it, click apply, and then re-enable the option to notify me before downloading or installing (because this way, I at least know it's working). I don't know when this started, or what I did to cause it, but the only way to get THAT back was the ol' "nondestructive repair install." Of course, during these so-called jumpstarts, I still didn't have any icon in the system tray and for all I know the updates weren't being downloaded at all. I put this OS on this machine TWO DAYS AGO and I've installed nothing besides the PCI USB 2.0 card, Avast Antivirus, Windows Defender and my network adapter....

When I have Automatic Updates enabled, svchost uses 100% of the CPU. I disabled svchost and am able to use the computer.
With svchost disabled, I can not use Automatic Update. With it enabled, the computer freezes.

This usually happens as I shut down, when I have notification that updates are being downloaded and installed and the computer will shut itself off afterwards.All has been well until this week. I found that there were still 2 updates waiting for installation. I checked the little sheild and tried to download and install manually. I had a 'failed' notice.The two updates are - Microsoft excel 2003 KB955466 and Microsoft Outlook 2003 junk email filter KB957257.I am not too worried about these as I do not use Outlook, and rarely use excel. click on my ISP Icon to go online. I have went into User Accounts and have found NO WAY to remove my Name. I have recently set my computer up to go on my DSL online automatically and it won't until I click O K on the user box.
