my computer is running at 100% CPU almost all the time, erratically. I am SO frustrated-- this has happened to me twice before, and I could not figure it out, so I just reinstalled fresh copies of Windows each time.It runs fine for a while, then all of a sudden this same problem comes back. I am sick of having to reinstall all of my programs, and was hoping that maybe someone else was having a similar problem so I wouldn't have to reinstall everything again.
I have just reinstalled XP, and just installed SP2 for the first time, now the one glaring thing I have noticed immediately was my browser has slowed to an almost crawl. While sometimes, not often, the pages will load quickly, they usually take at least 10-15 secs, normally pages drop quite fast 2-4 secs for most as a guesstimate.
Please can someone tell me why my PC has slowed right down & takes ages to open programes? It's driving me mad. I have got AVG & Zone Alarm running, also Spybot & Acronis Spyware Shield. Even with these I still keep getting spyware & adware but because Spybot runs every time I log on I get rid of them straight away.I don't know why things have slowed so much.
I loaded SP 2 for XP home edition on my Dell insperion laptop and the machine slowed down. So much that it takes 24 minutes to boot-up. When I first got the laptop 96months ago)I was prompted to download SP2 I did and had the same problem. Dell walked me through restoring and said I should not install SP2.
My system uses Intel 810 Motherboard and Penitum -3, 800MHZ processor. I have Windows XP Professional installed. My problem is that the system has slowed down very much. It takes a very long time to even load the interface fully. Most of the programs in Startup (MSConfig)also do not load. I have recently installed Norton 2005. I have scanned the system for Trojans, viruses, SpywareAdware etc. But nothing shows up. Is it because of NAV?? MSConfig/Startup also does not have any unknown entries.
Most of the time my desktop pc runs fine, but about once a week when I click on a link or a page is loading in IE the system will virtually freeze.I don't do a lot of surfing (it's a work computer) so I don't venture into dangerous territory (sites with popups and redirects etc). I also keep my cache and cookies pretty clean, so it's not because that gets clogged up. The sites that cause the problem don't seem to have anything in common and are work related or news related sites. I also DON'T have any 3rd party toolbars installed and DO have all the latest updates to XP Professional. When the lockup occurs, if I do Ctrl-Alt-Del and open the Task Manager (this can take a minute or 2 to load because of the problem) I can see the Internet Explorer is taking 98/99% of the cpu usage. I can try to cancel IE, but it won't cancel. I can't click on anything in the IE window because it's locked up. If I try to switch to a different open window, that could take from 2-4 minutes to refresh. I tried to lower the priority of IE in the Task Manager, but this makes no difference.
I have a Toshiba Satellite with a Celeron M, 1.4Ghz, 1.5Gb RAM, and XP Home. In the past few days, it has slowed down to a crawl. Programs like Sound Forge that opened almost instantly now take a minute or more. I ran a complete virus scan and found nothing. System Restore won't work - even in Safe Mode. It's like everything is in slow motion. The CPU is active even when I'm doing nothing.
im using xp and ive run avg antivirus, adaware, spybot, regcleaner, and looked for things myself. i think ive worked out most of the viruses but timezone.exe is still taking up most of my resources including ram and processor<--my processor usually jumps between 50% and 100% constantly i heard that its a windows app but if it is it hasnt run on my computer very much before for me to notice it and it probably shouldnt be taking up so many resources
My system now takes about half an hour to boot up. I gets to the desk top pritty quick but I cant use anything for about 30 mins.So far I have deleted some old programs ran disk clean up on both drives. There is not much on my computre and and my C drive is less then half full. I ran a full virus scan and it was all clear. I only have one anti virus and no firewall.

I'm using XP service pack 2 on a Fujitsu-Seimens laptop. The system has slowed down so much now that it can take 5 minutes to refresh a webpage. It has only recently happened. Im not sure whats going on my computer is just going slow. It started about a week ago, I installed a second hardrive about 3 weeks ago but everything was ok.Its slow to open programs clicking on anything all that.I ran spybot and Adadware, panda online scan and trend micro and no viruses some spyware I removed. XP refusing to log me on to my system as my Profile was corrupt or missing. For a while I could log off the temp Profile and get my Profile loaded but not at all now. I tried creating a new user Profile and copying over my existing Profile but Windows failed to do that. Now running a new Profile and have manually copied over various bits and settings etc. That was the first signs of problems.

A couple of weeks ago I was searching the net and everything froze. Trying to shut down properly, NOTHING would work, including the power button. I removed and reconnected the battery to shut down and restart.Well, since then my computer has been unbearably slow. Every task from start-up (20 minutes, if at all) to loading Firefox (10 minutes) in awful. There are times where nothing even loads, all I see is my background and a cursor, nothing more.On the lucky chance that I do get everything up and running, it is slow to the point where even the clock is behind other clocks around me (cable box, other laptop) by 8-20 or so minutes.

I just recently upgraded to xp pro fromWindows ME. On windows me, when yu right click on my computer under properties, you can see how much resources the system is using. Where in XP PRO can I see how much resources my system is using. I believe i ran into it by accident but I don't remember where now.
How do you view system resources in Windows XP? Windows Me had a resource meter. I can't find that in XP. The Help system did not offer any help. Doesn't Microsoft have a resource meter for XP? If so, where is it?
Whenever I pop in a CD, my computer freezes over, and if I happen to get into the Windows Task Manager screen, it tells me that the System Idle Process is using 99 of my computer. What is happening here? This also happens when I leave the computer on for too long

Have"Iomega Automatic Backup Pro Software" and the Iomega 80gb usb external hard drive This software works great for backing up data The only way I can get it to work for a complete system restore on my C/Drive is in safe mode! Tried it on another computer had same problem. One of the computers has Windows Xp Pro (media adtion) the other windows XP home.The Windows Pro is HP that has the recovery backup on seperate partion D/Drive , installed as fat32,. Normal system is on C/drive . I can do a back up the on the D/drive Fat32 but not the C/drive which is NTFS. This appears to be great software very simple to use nothing like Ghost 2003 . only problem it doesn't work for doing a complete system backup. (The reason I bought it) Was wondering if anyone has used this software and had similar difficulties ? Or if anyone has any idea what could be causing the problem?
How can I stop some processes from running when I start up Windows and how do I know which ones are critical and which ones aren't. The image names don't make much sense to me.
I have been quite happily using my laptop without any probblems for the past 4-5 months. Well, it appears that I am having a common problem: I seem to be running out of system resources on a regular basis. I have a Dell Latitude D531, Turion 64 X2 mobile TL-60 2 GHz, with 1.87 GB of RAM.I mainly use outlook (with a several hundred GB .PST file), firefox 3.5.1 with google toolbar and IE tab add-ons, the newest version of foxit and a proprietary office-based software simultaneously.About three months ago, I recollect seeing a distinct performance lag with the computer and started to run out of system resources on a regular basis. Programs wouldn't launch without a message (or sometimes a system resource message appeared) and running apps would crash after hanging. When this starts to happen, I can close all of my applications and still see hang-ups and apps crash.
I archived my PST, run fewer apps at once, restored XP, cleared up HD space and run several different anti-virus/malware/adware programs with limited success. I have also attempted to remove as many non-essential applications, in case of a conflict that I was unaware of. At this point, I think the problem is software-based but beyond my comprehension.
When I've been using my computer for a while and try to place it in 'Hibernate', I get a message that states the there are not enough resources. Is there a way to free up resources so it can go into hibernate

Symptom: Lsass.exe is using about 60%, and svchost.exe is using about 40% (they move around up and down but are always using 100% together). Recently the computer semi died (after the login screen it would blue screen). I repaired to OS (the reinstall option for windows that leaves data and programs intact). Have chkdsk the HD (found and repaired errors), ran a defrag, ran diagnostics on the HD and RAM (all clean), and the computer still moves at a crawl. I've found a lot of articles about LSass.exe causing problems with win 2k domain controllers, but this is not win 2k, is not a domain controller, and is in fact not even on a domain. HijackThis log is clean as a whistle
