System Slowed To A Crawl - Is This A Registry?
Mar 17, 2007
I'm using XP service pack 2 on a Fujitsu-Seimens laptop. The system has slowed down so much now that it can take 5 minutes to refresh a webpage. It has only recently happened. I use a good anti-virus but cannot now complete a scan in sensible time. The CPU seems to be working 100% all the time. I'm pretty sure the problem is down to something I've downloaded recently. I've used system restore but no luck there.

My computer is slowing down to a crawl. The other night it was working fine. The next day a after work it was running slow so I cleared the temp files cache files, history files, scanned for spyware but the more I did the slower it got. I defrag it and it got slower. It's gotten to a point now that it will take forever to open anything and even when it does finally open it's soooo slow. It seems like it's running out of memory. Even when I click start to reboot it will take forever to open and when I click on shut down it will take forever to open too.

After getting this downloader virus which was picked up by norton and dispensed with, the personal computer began to slow up to a crawl. I am wondering if damage or sorts was done before it was removed. The available physical memory dropped to around 30M and the virtual memory is to the max and that seems to help. The operating system is XP pro with service pack 2.

I have always had Norton but accidentally deleted a file so that it no longer worked. I downloaded EZ Armor which is the freebie from Road Runner (My new ISP). I haven't been able to move around very much since that time.
My PC shuts down all by itself from time to time and I can no longer connect to OE to get my email. The computer seems so slow all of a sudden. I primarily use Firefox 1.5. On occasion I use IE. All of this started after I deleted the remainder of the

my computer is running at 100% CPU almost all the time, erratically. I am SO frustrated-- this has happened to me twice before, and I could not figure it out, so I just reinstalled fresh copies of Windows each time.It runs fine for a while, then all of a sudden this same problem comes back. I am sick of having to reinstall all of my programs, and was hoping that maybe someone else was having a similar problem so I wouldn't have to reinstall everything again.

Im not sure whats going on my computer is just going slow. It started about a week ago, I installed a second hardrive about 3 weeks ago but everything was ok.Its slow to open programs clicking on anything all that.I ran spybot and Adadware, panda online scan and trend micro and no viruses some spyware I removed. It looks like Explorer.exe and java are taking up the most of it but even with the java is off and Im disconnected from the internet its still very slow.I have a Dell Dimension 2400 2.4ghz processor 512 megs ram, geforce fx 5200 and windows xp. a forty gigabyte hardrive and 8 gigabyte hardrive I added. I used cables from a older computer to hook up the two harddrives dont know if that matters or not. Ive tried defragging both drives too It didnt help.

I started having problems with Internet Explorer, it would crash very frequently and I would have to clear temp files and cookies for it to work properly. I posted a HJT log and was advised to update to SP2 (whoops, only had broadband 3 weeks so I didn't know
I also started using Firefox and it worked fine where IE crashed out. I think i'll stick with it.
Now I have problems with my connection, IE and Firefox often time out and take 20seconds or so to load a new page. My dads laptop on the same wireless connection works fine (I have PC with wireless card on BT 2meg co

XP refusing to log me on to my system as my Profile was corrupt or missing. For a while I could log off the temp Profile and get my Profile loaded but not at all now. I tried creating a new user Profile and copying over my existing Profile but Windows failed to do that. Now running a new Profile and have manually copied over various bits and settings etc. That was the first signs of problems.
Now The PC takes ages to boot, several minutes - sits on the WinXP splash screen (with animated blue loading bar) for a long time, that clears to a blank screen where it sits for ages, Desktop finally loads but System Tray apps then take ages to load as well. The system generally runs slow once XP is fully loaded

A couple of weeks ago I was searching the net and everything froze. Trying to shut down properly, NOTHING would work, including the power button. I removed and reconnected the battery to shut down and restart.Well, since then my computer has been unbearably slow. Every task from start-up (20 minutes, if at all) to loading Firefox (10 minutes) in awful. There are times where nothing even loads, all I see is my background and a cursor, nothing more.On the lucky chance that I do get everything up and running, it is slow to the point where even the clock is behind other clocks around me (cable box, other laptop) by 8-20 or so minutes.

I bought my laptop through the university and it came with XP Pro preinstalled on it. I did not receive any cd's with it and was wondering how to go about getting it back to a freh copy of windows. I think my registry is buggered now and wouldn't mind starting afresh. I did some digging and found a thing called sysprep that has the option to prepare the machine for the end user.I'm wondering if I pushed it that would take it back to the state

I know that just exporting and importing the Registry does not put the Registry back to as it was before any new entries were made.
I've been told that doing a System Restore does not wipe out all new entries either.
I was told that the only way to put a Registry back as it was before new entries,is to do a System State backup using the Microsoft Backup utility.
Is the correct, and if not what method puts a Registry back, wiping out any and all new entries, the way it was

I have a brand-new computer, put together by a relative with almost all new parts. It's running Windows XP. Occasionally it crashes, sometimes I get error messages about the registry, and every once in a while the clock is wrong. I understand a bit about stop errors (because of Microsoft's nice error-reporting service) but I don't know how to find out what is causing them. Something about a driver, but how do I know which driver?
The computer seems to crash randomly, not with any discernable pattern or regularity.I suspect there's something wrong with the DVD player- music sometimes skips if I'm playing from a CD, and once the computer crashed while I was playing a large video file. Then again, I've played DVDs with no problem quite a few times and I've always been able to copy and burn. When the computer blue-screens, it shuts down before I can read any of it.

I followed the link from other threads to the microsoft site explaining repairing the registry using the installation disk. I got the computer from my brother in law and do not know where the installation disks are. Also it was factory installed and the microsoft instructions say they do not work with OEM software. Is there a way to fix this without the disk? If I find the disk Dell supplied will it work since it it was not a XP install disk?

After cloning one HD to another I noticed that the icons to many programs were not showing up. By that I mean the icon for say my PaintShop pro short cut was not showing up. When I manually try to set it that does not work either. A couple "registered" or unlocked programs had to be redone...in particular WinXp (home) was asking to re-register and song show plus wanted the unlock key again.
This is a minor annoyance, however after upgrading the MB, CPU and memory I ran Registry mechanic and it listed a ton of registry errors. In some cases, like the default icon for Paintshop pro it's looking for a C:/Windows/Installer folder that does not exist in either my new drive or the drive that was my source. I don't want to go ahead and fix all the errors, most of which now seem to be part of the missing icon issue I had to begin with. I might just end up having to reinstall the OS and all the other Apps we use for this projection system that doubles as our recording PC. My problem is that I just don't know how much of a problem these registry errors are going to be down the line. What got me thinking of scanning the registery was after the upgrade to the new MB I notice that on shut down the OS is hanging and won't complete the shut down.

Bit of a long story but here are the highlightsAdded spare memory stick and PC booted up OK Closed down PC, fixed cover on, tried to reboot but failed, got message from Windows saying system files corrupt Found process on Microsoft KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/en-us and carried this out. Only difference being that I was able to use XP from a second drive to do some of the copying which saved me from going in to Recovery Console all the time Last step in the process is to do a system restore but I get a message that this was not able to complete Tried several restore points
