which files/programs take up the most space on your computer? I've removed all of the unnecessary programs that I don't need or use or at least the one's that have an uninstall program or if I'm able to remove them from the control panel. What about .xls, .doc, .ppt, .mp3, .wav, etc? I have Windows 2000 Professional, Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and MS Office 2003.
View 8 Repliesi had to system restore and when i came back all my files where gone but i still ahd the same hard disk space left and then i ran my diskk defragmentor and i found some files that i had that are now fragmented and still takeing up large parts of my memory here is what the Analysis report for the defragmentor said and when i go in to USERDATA to try delte some files it says USERDATA is not assable ,acces is denied and i tryed goin in it on safe mode and im administator on my computer so idk y it wont let me in plase help i only got 4% disk space left and when i click run dick defragmentor it says i need 15% space to run efectively sould i still run it and c what happens?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am constantly finding my internet folders, temp folders, recent items and other folders filled with junk links which are taking up quite a bit of space on the drive.Before I did a complete rebuild, I managed to dump over a gigabyte of junk and obsolete files from the drive, and all this logging stuff just gets on
my nerves.
I have a 5Gb partition purely for XP Pro. Its got to the stage now where that partition is completely full. I've tried clearing temp. internet files etc as the ballon suggests (baloon tells me I'm running out of space on that partition), but this only takes off a few hundred Mb at best, and the extra space is soon filled again.It then suggests removing windows components that aren't used. To be honest, there's very little to remove in here as most things aren't installed. I've had a look through a lot of folders on that partition to seeif there's much I can remove, but I haven't found much to clear out.Han anyone suggest why there is now so much room taken by XP Pro? When I first installed it, it took up about a Gb (I think), and also anyone think of what files I could look to removing?

I have 3 users on the computer. Once I find out what is taking up the space, I'd like to "archive" the media to an external hard drive then delete it from the C Drive. Does that make sense?

I added a 4GB partition, dedicated to the paging file. At this point, I have my Master Drive's (C) paging file set to 2MB-50MB; the Slave Drive (D) has no paging file and the partition on the Slave (G) is set to 1536MB-3800MB.
The biggest memory hog is Firefox, which gets to around 200,000k if I let it. Spyware Terminator runs at about 50,000k, as does Thunderbird.Then, I have several programs that run in the 30,000k range (FeedDemon, Replay AV, etc).The rest (around 20 programs are fairly low users).What I'm trying to accomplish is, getting that little bit of extra performance so that when I'm running a program like Winamp and enjoying music, I don't get stutters in the performance when I open a browser or execute a function.
My computer is driving me nuts,, it takes slow long lately for anything to load on my computer. everything I try to open takes like 10 seconds or more. I get so impatient. Is there something I can do to make things open faster?

Programs like Sound Forge that opened almost instantly now take a minute or more. I ran a complete virus scan and found nothing. System Restore won't work - even in Safe Mode. It's like everything is in slow motion. The CPU is active even when I'm doing nothing.

It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. I have another hard drive that is in a removable tray that I use, and that has all the same settings and everything, but that one is using a fraction of the RAM and runs pretty good!

Sometimes I have to click on the file a second time at which time I get a(not responding) message on the folder bar.If I open the same file by starting WordPro and selecting the same file from among recently opened files it opens almost instantly. View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer has an EXTREMELY small Hard Disk and I want to make the most out of it.I have ran CCleaner many times, removed a few programs that I dont need/want and deleted some music & photos that I dont need/want. But I ran disk cleanup the other day and I really didn't bother cleaning up anything because 1MB wasn't worth it. Ecept I clicked on the More Options tab and I discovered I can free more space by removing all but the most recent restore point.So i did this and i was pleasantly surprised with my results.

Today I deleted some files totaling about 4 gigs in size (also emptying the recycling bin) and it did not free up any space on my hard drive (NTFS, SATA, 320GB, 16MB Cache, 7200 RPM, Western Digital WD3200KS). It reported the same free space as before I had deleted the files. When I select all the files and hit properties the size on disk is reported as 272 GB (292,118,638,592 bytes), but when I go to properties on the disk itself it reports used space as 276 GB (297,209,229,312 bytes). I was wondering if anyone knew a way to "reclaim" this space (I don't know if windows just didn't mark the space as free or what). This has happened to other drives of mine, reformatting fixes them

The problem I'm having is, every week I do a scan disk and defrag. I've noticed that once defraged since a few weeks ago I HAVE GONE from over 70% free space down to only under 40%....I don't run any major software at the moment BUTDO use the internet on ADSL most days BUT not to any great extent. This is not a very serious problem because I have discovered several work-arounds for it. But I am sick of it and I would like to know how to fix it.I am using Windows XP Home SP2. I like to use Windows Explorer to open all my files by double-clicking them. I also like to design actions for the context menu, such as "view" to open in Firefox or "edit" to open in Word. I keep having problems with files with spaces anywhere in the file path. I would like to be able to use spaces in my file names and store files in directories with spaces. For example, I have problems storing files anywhere in "My Documents" or "Desktop" because those folders are subfolders of C:Documents and Settings and Windows won't let me rename "Documents and Settings" because it is a system folder.
