View 2 Replies View RelatedI had Windows Explorer open while running my compter today and noticed that C:Program Files and C:Windows folders was growing. They must have started out at about 1GB or so and by the time they had stopped growing the C:Program Files folder was a little over 3GB and the C:Windows folder was a little over 4GB. I don't know if this is normal or not but am including the text from a HiJackThis log. I am running Windows XP Pro. Can someone tell me if there is a problem or if this is normal?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a five year old dell dimensions 8200. Three years ago, I added a 250 gig. D-drive. My computer has been so slow that I wanted to reinstall windows. So, erased and formatted my D-drive and put windows on it. I then added a program called "Wipe Drive" in order to erase my C-drive. (I was thinking to use my d-drive mainly and c-drive for backup). I closed my computer, then when I went to reboot, i first got the message "ntldr is missing press control alt delete." So, I did this. I soon did not get the ntlrd message and got a message saying failure to boot and press contol, alt, delete to restart. I tried to instal windows again and it did not boot. I did the f2 thing and made sure my cd-rom was first. I did the f12 thing and tried to open cd. Nothing has worked to help boot or get to the blue screen that lets me choose drive.I think I erased important start up info on my c-drive.

Two times now, at a seemingly random times (both times round about 11:00AM), all of a sudden, loads (and I mean tens of thousands) of TMP files, looking like 0fb149fbcb12b2799cfd1c55fc08b4e9.TMP are pumped into my system32 folder. In a matter of 15 or 20 minutes, this may generated as much as 5GB of used diskspace. Some are 0K, some are 91K, but other than those tow, sizes seem to be constant.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently noticed that my free space on hard drive has been eroded and my used space has been increasing. I have not added any software. Much to my dismay I cannot figure out why this would occur. We did make recovery disks and removed our partition some weeks ago. It seems our C drive is using up space without any explanation. Ran many different anti virus and spyware software and they did not detect anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt all started when I noticed that my bootup time was about 30 seconds slower than it should be. For 30 seconds after the BIOS post screen, my monitor is black and the computer sits there HD LED going full bore. Then it goes to the normal WINXP bootup screens, blah blah blah, then I'm in windows. I ran a safe mode startup and I noticed that the bootup would hang for 30 seconds on windows/system32/config/system. What the heck is that file? I'm certain this can't be normal behavior. What's the problem? The size of my system32/config folder is now 70.3 MB.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy computer is growing tired. Below this message are some stats about my setup that might be useful. The computer is 5 years old now. I know, ancient by today's standards, but it's what we have right now. Over time, between installed software, uninstalled software, etc., it seems to have gotten slower. I've heard that every once in a while, it's not a bad idea to initialize the hard disk and reinstall the software.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows XP sp2. Problem is, my C drive fills up. I have removed all but the latest restore point, reduced the max amount of restore point storage to 5%, and removed all of the programs that I don't use very often, moved all of my files to the D drive, clean the cache and remove cookies regularly, and use disk cleanup a lot. After all of this, I only have 1.25GB left in C drive. Not even enough space left to defrag the drive. Anyone have any suggestions? Before long I won't have ANY programs left. I don't use a TV card or anything like that, although I do have the capability to record but never use it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedLately my computer had been getting slower and slower, so I decided that I would "reformat" it. I got my compaq recovery cd and restarted my computer and brought up the setup. Apparently I made the mistake of pressing the restore defaults option because now my computer won't boot up. It will show the compaq thing and then it brings me to a black screen that says "Starting Windows 98" and then lists some information that doesn't pertain to rebooting the computer and then gives me this A:> and then the option to type somthing. So far I can't find out what to do. I also can't find a way to use my recovery cd either. Is there anyway that I can get my computer back again by either setup, the disk, or the A:> function? If so can someone please help me?

im using windows xp, there is only one drive, which is C:i have 74.52 GB capacity,
Today I deleted some files totaling about 4 gigs in size (also emptying the recycling bin) and it did not free up any space on my hard drive (NTFS, SATA, 320GB, 16MB Cache, 7200 RPM, Western Digital WD3200KS). It reported the same free space as before I had deleted the files. When I select all the files and hit properties the size on disk is reported as 272 GB (292,118,638,592 bytes), but when I go to properties on the disk itself it reports used space as 276 GB (297,209,229,312 bytes). I was wondering if anyone knew a way to "reclaim" this space (I don't know if windows just didn't mark the space as free or what). This has happened to other drives of mine, reformatting fixes them
