My Computer Is Growing : System Getting Slower
Jun 29, 2005
My computer is growing tired. Below this message are some stats about my setup that might be useful. The computer is 5 years old now. I know, ancient by today's standards, but it's what we have right now. Over time, between installed software, uninstalled software, etc., it seems to have gotten slower. I've heard that every once in a while, it's not a bad idea to initialize the hard disk and reinstall the software.

i've been running dvd2svcd to convert my dvd's and since i stopped (yesterday), the system cache in the task manager keeps sucking up all my ram.i restarted-nothing i ran a ram optimizer-reset to 500mb free, then system cache swallowed it up again my page file is set for 1150mb. before, the system ran at about 300-400 mb free with normal programs running (int explrer, solitaire, movies, music, etc).

I've noticed the my comptuer is getting extremely slow. DUring game sessions I used to leave firefox running, now if I leave firefox running the fps drops dramatically. I end task everything that isn't required for my system to run on but always had that. If I have more than 1 window open, it freezes and nothing works for about 1 - 10 minutes.

XP Pro; 1Gb RAM, Pentium III/700. USB 2 On a separate thread I asked for help because I got a speed trouble in relation with chkdsk of my external 80 G disk (after what I restarted the PC interrupting the process). But now I want to tell that, absolutely sure, my system got slower after that "adventure": openings of columns, AGAIN the opening of the task bar with fugitive blue square windows instead of icons, trembling of desk icons at the start, clear longer time with the "blue welcome", etc. Before I had the "bright" obsessive idea to run a chkdsk, my PC was peforming more than very well. I am already convinced that a PC is a wonder, but with more than good-for-the-health nightmares, every other day.

My laptop is a little over a year old, and has gradually gotten slower to both start up and shutdown. I have hardly anything running at start up, and the disk has been defraged. On the other hand, my 5+ year old desktop boots up in LESS than half the time, running less RAM and a slower processor. The only difference is that the desktop was reformatted a few months ago, but it has not slowed down. Here it is Toshiba Satellite A-105 1.7 Dual Core 1Ghz RAM XP SP2 Start up Items:AVG Anti virus Zone Alarm Firewall Toshiba Hot keys (The Fn Function keys) Toshiba Touch pad (Mouse)Intel WirelessI've done several scans and there are no viruses or spy ware. I have also used both Crap Cleaner and Norton Utilities (No, Norton is NOT installed and found no registry issues. I did run Hijack This, and here's the log.

I bought a computer that has SP2 already installed so I can't get rid of it. It blocks all the pop-ups I need to get to and makes my computer slower.I hate SP2.

I used bootvis to try to increase my computer's startup time. However it actually did the opposite. I tried to do a system restore, but it failed. I even tried to use the bootvis again, but still the same startup times. The initial startup to the login screen is fine, but after login, it takes an additional 2-3 minutes just for the startmenu bar to appear. All that shows at first is my picture that I have set as a background. Now mind you I never had this problem before using bootvis.
Is there anyway to go back to the original configuration?

my computer had started to restart or completely shut down on its own randomly when i was using it. The computer has gotten slower over the years (its about 5 years old) and when i shut down on its own again today i decided that i would just reformat the whole thing. So I just finished doing the disk recovery thing and i transferred over some old files that i had backed up from before onto another hard drive and I was just installing a game back onto the computer
a few moments ago when the computer restarted by itself again! when it came back i started my browser and it did it again a second time. Anyway I was wondering what the hell is going on with this thing, could it be some of the files i backed up and transferred over? Im running windows XP any additional info you guys need about the PC or what i have on it ill tell you, but please I really need some help I cant have this happening over and over again.

one of my svchost instances just keeps on growing and growing. after 2 days of uptime it is about 70mb. i have used process explorer to determine that it is the RPC service that has started the instance of svchost from the Network service account. is it normal that this process keeps growing like this, usually when people have a problem with svchost it is because i hogs the cpu but in my case it is hogging the pagefile. i dont experience any XP slowdowns so i dont know if this actually is a problem. but i want to solve this before it becomes a problem. one time the svchost process was 100mb and kept growing

It all started when I noticed that my bootup time was about 30 seconds slower than it should be. For 30 seconds after the BIOS post screen, my monitor is black and the computer sits there HD LED going full bore. Then it goes to the normal WINXP bootup screens, blah blah blah, then I'm in windows. I ran a safe mode startup and I noticed that the bootup would hang for 30 seconds on windows/system32/config/system. What the heck is that file? I'm certain this can't be normal behavior. What's the problem? The size of my system32/config folder is now 70.3 MB.

I had Windows Explorer open while running my compter today and noticed that C:Program Files and C:Windows folders was growing. They must have started out at about 1GB or so and by the time they had stopped growing the C:Program Files folder was a little over 3GB and the C:Windows folder was a little over 4GB. I don't know if this is normal or not but am including the text from a HiJackThis log. I am running Windows XP Pro. Can someone tell me if there is a problem or if this is normal?

I recently had to reload Windows XP on my computer. Since I have done that, my computer has been running very slow. When I scroll down on the screen, it takes a few seconds to refresh the screen rather than being a smooth flow. Also media download speeds are slower. Is there a way to speed up my processor or something, or something I can reset to speed it up? I have a Broadband connection, but I don't think the connection is the problem because there is the same slow speed when I am not on-line.

Intel DQ963FX motherboard and mated it with a Intel E2200 Dual core processor. I have 3 gig memory and a NVidia 9400 GT graphics card w/1 gig memory. The machine is not used for gaming but for everyday on line tasks. The on board graphics are disabled. I updated the Bios to the latest version and am running XP Pro SP3. I have the usual antivirus protection enabled, Purchased Zone internet suite, Nortons (kept disabled in case zone craps out)and malware bytes, Super anti malware, Spybot S&D and ad aware.Sometimes when I start this machine and go to Firefox,(or IE for that matter) the system will slow to the point that even audio is stunted. I have the latest java enabled so I don't think that is the problem. This motherboard has very little in the bios to tweak so that hasn't been tampered with too much (latest bios update was installed after the slow started). Whenever the slow down occurs if I restart the machine it will run up to speed for awhile then eventually slow down again. My old P-4 3.02 was sooo much faster that I regret ever having built this new clunker. . Is there a known problem with this mb or proc that I haven't found yet?

I was having problems before, but came to this site, did a search for hal.dll and found exactly what I needed! So, I did Bootcfg /Rebuild to fix the issue that I was having, but now since I have done that my computer takes a little bit longer to load, and when I am turning it off, it shuts off but never powers off. It has this "it is now safe to turn off your computer" thing on the screen and I need to push the button to turn it off. Is there a way to make it so it can just turn off after it shuts everything down?
