I have a laptop on which windows xp home is installed on c drive. It has a hard didk of 160gb all on c drive. Whenever i reinstall windows on my laptop all my data get erased. Is it possible to make another drive and allocate some 80 gb to it so that on reinstalling the data does not get erased.
View 8 RepliesI decided to "reinstall" Windows XP on my laptop. I stuck the reinstall disk into the computer and let it go. After about 1 hour of "reinstalling", the computer restarted, after that, the window was only one half the size and I couldn't change the monitor resolution size. (but, it showed the old desktop information so I knew right away that I hadn't actually reinstalled to the original state, but just reinstalled over the current desktop).
I restarted the computer to see if the window screen would enlarge to the full size. It did return to the full screen size, but Now, it freezes at the part of startup where the screen says "Windows is starting up". I left it on for 20 minutes and it was still frozen. SHould I insert the Windows XP disk again, to start over or what? Or click reboot after hitting the F2 button??
I have a five year old dell dimensions 8200. Three years ago, I added a 250 gig. D-drive. My computer has been so slow that I wanted to reinstall windows. So, erased and formatted my D-drive and put windows on it. I then added a program called "Wipe Drive" in order to erase my C-drive. (I was thinking to use my d-drive mainly and c-drive for backup). I closed my computer, then when I went to reboot, i first got the message "ntldr is missing press control alt delete." So, I did this. I soon did not get the ntlrd message and got a message saying failure to boot and press contol, alt, delete to restart. I tried to instal windows again and it did not boot. I did the f2 thing and made sure my cd-rom was first. I did the f12 thing and tried to open cd. Nothing has worked to help boot or get to the blue screen that lets me choose drive.I think I erased important start up info on my c-drive.

For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.

So, unhappy with the amount of processes from HP and also vista taking up the laptop's performance, I decided to re-install Windows Xp 64 Bit OS. The first thing I do is pop in the install CD, which takes me to the "WIndows setup starting.. etc, and says loading drivers, etc, and as soon as it gets to "Windows setup is starting up.. (the one after it loads the neccessary files) I immediately bluescreen with this message : A problem has been detected.......

In the past when I have needed to wipe an installation, I have just pulled the drive and put it into another of my machines to clean the hard drive to start all over and proceed that way. I try to repair it with boot CD but it NEVER finds a previous version of windows to repair. So I try stuff in recovery console such as replacing my ntfs file (was told to do this by someone) but that doesn't help. Then I attempted to chkdsk but 30 minutes later it's only at 20%. May as well just reinstall!
2. My laptop often just cuts the power. I think this is due to overheating but to be honest when it cuts sometimes it's hot and sometimes it is not. I have ordered a cooling mat and in the meantime I have a big office fan blasting it on full power, seems to help. I'm also considering buying compressed air can.................

It would get to the Windows 2000 start up screen and just stop responding after the status bar reach about 3/4 way. I tried booting into last known good config with no success and tried booting into Safe Mode with no success so finally I just decided to re-install windows from scratch. I was able to boot from CD and re-format the drive but now I get the blue screen of death after getting about 3/4 of the way through install stating something about a possible hardware change. There have been no changes to the hardware and I have tried several times with the same results.

I turn it on, see the Gateway Screen with it's options, then it goes to a black screen. I have my startup disk and i'm FULLY prepared to reinstall windows and erase everything on my computer, but when I get to that screen to do so (choosing destructive reformat or whatever) it starts, but then never finishes. I gave it to my tech people at the college, but they're seemingly incompetent, so I've come to you guys looking for an answer.

It won't boot from the CD - it just tells me that the operating system is not found. I had that much figured out. I'm no computer whiz, but it looks to me like the drive IS recognized in the BIOS. I even loaded the XP onto a flash drive and tried to boot from that.

I got blue screen of death on my laptop and it keeps on restarting before the window can actually boot up. It show's this message and reboots every single time when starting up Windows XP. I tried recovering the windows from the Recovery CD but it goes to the Gateway Symbol n freezes there and I have to restart the system every single time and try to boot from the recovery CD. it goes searching for recovery date on the hard drive and if not found any it will boot the recovery cd. but it goes to this scan and just freezes there with running the recovery data from the cd.

(I got the "Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility" message).I changed the order to the disk drive under the setup utility and was able to get it to recognize the Windows XP Install CD but that's where I'm unsure what to do. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a very screwed up Win XP computer and am trying to reinstall XP from the CD. I changed the boot order to boot from CD and everything goes fine, files load etc. It asks a few questions during the loading which I answer and all goes fine. Then after it loads the files it finally asks 'are you sure you want to proceed' but at that point everything USB fails including the keyboard, so I can't tell it Yes to proceed. There is no other port to plug in an input device other than the 6 usb ports. Is there a way to get around this?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 5100. Its sevice tag # is H65WK31. It's been running really slowly and had a bunch of stuff on it. When I tried to dfragment and stuff it shut down. In the end, I decided to just strip the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP (which is what it had.) The reinstallation went surprisingly well since I don't know the first thing about computers. At first it wouldn't play sounds or let me add or update Adobe flash or anything. I went into Device manager and found yellow exclamation points beside several thing and updated drivers and that fixed everything except beside Other Devices, it has the yellow exclamation mark. Underneath that, it says Video Controller (VGA compatible) and has a yellow exclamation mark beside it. It won't let me update the drivers. It says "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software." I have a CD that I may or may not have come with this DELL (I have several over the years.) It says it's from ATI. I tried to put it in and go through the cd to update the drivers. I get a message that says the same thing. When I got my computer, it seems like I had an upgrade on the video card, but all that was done before my computer left the factory. As it stands, I have a picture, but it looks like I'm in safe mode.

Earlier I had installed windows XP on the first hard drive (40GB) and was using second hard drive as additional storage. I had partitioned my second hard drive into 5 partitions P, Q, R, S, T. Recently I reformatted my first hard drive and reinstalled windows XP. However this has also affected my second hard drive. Now Windows shows only two drives C: (my first hard drive) and D: (second hard drive) as only one partition each. Moreover it is not showing any data on the second hard drive. I want to get back my parition info and data on the second hard drive. I thought that formatting my first drive will not affect second drive and therefore didn't take back up of the second drive. What shall I do to get back my data and partition info.

I had to reinstall windows after a virus took out all of the essential .dll files and the computer wouldn't start up, I now have a problem with some of my hardware not working. When I go into device manager the following have yellow question marks beside them:
ethernet controller
multimedia audio controller
video controller (VGA compatible).
The computer itself is an XC cube edition (not sure if that's a brand or not). It was supplied for a disabled student if that helps? It runs windows XP service pack 2.
