I just got a laptop running XP home & my pc also runs XP home. I want to put a lot of date files on it, & some of them won't fit on a CD. Is there any way to conntect & send them with a USB cable?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use a USB Hard Drive to migrate some data between two computers running Windows XP Pro. I'm using the Windows XP files and settings transfer wizard. The drive shows up a local drive instead of a removable drive on the old computer. When I run the Wizard, it seems to do a quick job on processing the C: drive contents. Then it bogs down trying to also process about 30 GB of files that happen to all ready be on the external drive.
This old man has made a big mistake this time. I went and purchased a new retail version of Windows XP Home Edition sp2 for my newer computer which has a OEM xp
on it. Well i dont know what happened but i ended up installing it on my old p3 computer which i will hardley ever use anymore. My question is , can i somehow take it off the old computer and put it on my newer one? I have already activated it.
We are looking for a faster way to transfer user data to a new pc or hdd. We currently use winzip with wildcards to search the hard drive for specified file extensions. Depending on the number of these files a user may have, it can take over an hour or longer. This is mainly because of their .pst files (some have more than one and are up to the 2gb limit), that are on there harddrive and the network team will not let the .pst's reside on a network drive.What we do is either slave the old drive to the new or we'll map to shard drive on a pc connected to the network, we will start winzip having it search with the wildcards and create the zip file in a data folder on the new pc or hdd.

Should I expect trouble if I make a ghost image of the hard drive on the original notebook, image it on to the new notebook and install all the drivers for the new notebook? There are a few large programs and alot of critical data and settings, so if this method works, I would like to do it this way. The old notebook will have Mandrake installed, so the XP license will continue to only be used on one computer.

Couple of things came up: "Error TCP/IP adapter binding" and "TCP/IP not connected". Tech asked if I hit a keyboard key that shut it down. They referred me to Toshiba. Is it possible to take my current copy of XP that came with my computer, uninstall it / remove it onto a flash drive / cd (even transfer it to my laptop) and then use it on a new computer that I'm going to get? They are charging $80-100 for a copy of XP and this could significantly reduce my price. I would also need to know how to install it on this new computer if this is possible, which is unlikely.

So I bought a hard drive enclosure so I could transfer the files onto my laptop, the one I'm using right now. However I used to have a password for my account, and my files were marked private. I got blue screen of death on my laptop and it keeps on restarting before the window can actually boot up. It show's this message and reboots every single time when starting up Windows XP. I tried recovering the windows from the Recovery CD but it goes to the Gateway Symbol n freezes there and I have to restart the system every single time and try to boot from the recovery CD. it goes searching for recovery date on the hard drive and if not found any it will boot the recovery cd. but it goes to this scan and just freezes there with running the recovery data from the cd.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had a bad HDD failure which corrupted part of my WinXP OS with the result that I am unable to boot into Windows. I have reloaded Windows on another HDD and I will be able to recover most of my data from backups. However, there is still some recent data on the bad disk which I am frantic to recover. I am able to find the "Documents and Settings" folder where I believe the "Outlook Express" data is held
I am unable to get into the folder as my username on the computer was passworded (the password is known). Neither am I allowed to copy the folder to my new drive. I cannot access the folder from my new OS even when I password myself with the same username / password. I have attempted to repair the bad drive's copy of Windows but that wasn't successful. I don't want to replace the bad copy with a fresh as this would reformat the drive taking with it the folder I want (and can't copy). Any work on the folder would need to be on the bad drive, it seems. I have run out of ideas.
Can I install XP on a hard drive which has only one partition with data without destroying the data?
