I have a compaq computer and have a problem with the restore cd from compaq. I needed to reformat the hard drive because of some crup files. When I put the restore cd in the computer is says the cd's are not for this compaq. I taked to compaq and gave them all the information they ask for and was told that I had the correct cd and it must be a bad cd set. They had me order a new set of cd's from there online store which I did with the part number they gave me after I double checked the number to see if they were correct and I got them in yesterday and still had the same problem. I talked to hp again last night and was told that the mother board most likely needed to be tatoo to match the cd's. I was told to take it to one of there repair stores to have this done. Never heard of a mother board changing it's self.

The computer is working but I can't get sound or USB services The computer doesn't even seem to know that sound hardware exists on this new motherboard for some reason... The USB, I have no idea why its not working other then the fact I can't get my USB printer or camera to work... Do I have to "Reload" XP? I don't want to loose what's on my hard drive... What should I do to get this right??? In all the years I've had computers I've never had a motherboard die before so I'm not sure how to proceed!!!
So recently I got a new monitor assuming that something is wrong with my old one. But the same problem occurs, my monitor still goes blank! Well, ever since I switched my video card (same time I got my old monitor) I was experiencing that problem. People at the store are no help at all since they are so clueless!
So I came to this conclusion, its either my video card that's experiencing problems or my mother board is getting out dated or whatsoever. (I got it back in 2003 and its Pentium 4 hyper-threading) My current mother board doesn't have a monitor slot on the pentium, only has a slot where the video card is. I don't think that could be a problem because when I had my old video card,

I am trying to use a USB Hard Drive to migrate some data between two computers running Windows XP Pro. I'm using the Windows XP files and settings transfer wizard. The drive shows up a local drive instead of a removable drive on the old computer. When I run the Wizard, it seems to do a quick job on processing the C: drive contents. Then it bogs down trying to also process about 30 GB of files that happen to all ready be on the external drive.

We are looking for a faster way to transfer user data to a new pc or hdd. We currently use winzip with wildcards to search the hard drive for specified file extensions. Depending on the number of these files a user may have, it can take over an hour or longer. This is mainly because of their .pst files (some have more than one and are up to the 2gb limit), that are on there harddrive and the network team will not let the .pst's reside on a network drive. What we do is either slave the old drive to the new or we'll map to shard drive on a pc connected to the network, we will start winzip having it search with the wildcards and create the zip file in a data folder on the new pc or hdd.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI need to transfer data, settings and programs from one notebook to another. Should I expect trouble if I make a ghost image of the hard drive on the original notebook, image it on to the new notebook and install all the drivers for the new notebook? There are a few large programs and alot of critical data and settings, so if this method works, I would like to do it this way. The old notebook will have Mandrake installed, so the XP license will continue to only be used on one computer.
