Feb 3, 2008I bought a new laptop with Windows XP in it, I wanted to transfer some files from my Desktop PC which has Vista to my laptop with XP, I bought a Belkin USB Data Transfer Cable to transfer files with help of Windows Easy Transfer but when I installed the software provided with it, it seemed that I can only transfer files from XP to Vista.

Dec 10, 2008I am trying to use a USB Hard Drive to migrate some data between two computers running Windows XP Pro. I'm using the Windows XP files and settings transfer wizard. The drive shows up a local drive instead of a removable drive on the old computer. When I run the Wizard, it seems to do a quick job on processing the C: drive contents. Then it bogs down trying to also process about 30 GB of files that happen to all ready be on the external drive.

Dec 3, 2004We are looking for a faster way to transfer user data to a new pc or hdd. We currently use winzip with wildcards to search the hard drive for specified file extensions. Depending on the number of these files a user may have, it can take over an hour or longer. This is mainly because of their .pst files (some have more than one and are up to the 2gb limit), that are on there harddrive and the network team will not let the .pst's reside on a network drive.What we do is either slave the old drive to the new or we'll map to shard drive on a pc connected to the network, we will start winzip having it search with the wildcards and create the zip file in a data folder on the new pc or hdd.

Should I expect trouble if I make a ghost image of the hard drive on the original notebook, image it on to the new notebook and install all the drivers for the new notebook? There are a few large programs and alot of critical data and settings, so if this method works, I would like to do it this way. The old notebook will have Mandrake installed, so the XP license will continue to only be used on one computer.

My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.

Dec 31, 2006I had a bad HDD failure which corrupted part of my WinXP OS with the result that I am unable to boot into Windows. I have reloaded Windows on another HDD and I will be able to recover most of my data from backups. However, there is still some recent data on the bad disk which I am frantic to recover. I am able to find the "Documents and Settings" folder where I believe the "Outlook Express" data is held
I am unable to get into the folder as my username on the computer was passworded (the password is known). Neither am I allowed to copy the folder to my new drive. I cannot access the folder from my new OS even when I password myself with the same username / password. I have attempted to repair the bad drive's copy of Windows but that wasn't successful. I don't want to replace the bad copy with a fresh as this would reformat the drive taking with it the folder I want (and can't copy). Any work on the folder would need to be on the bad drive, it seems. I have run out of ideas.
