View 3 Repliesmy cable is not working properly.Every 15-20 minutes my internet connection is broken even though the modem is online and there is no problem with the cable coming into my house. I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. I already talked to my ISP support but these guys are brain damaged or something and cannot even comprehend my problem and all 3 actually concluded that i had somehow contracted some killer virus immediately after connecting my computer and this virus was the root of my problems

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to connect to my home pc using a remote desktop connection. I have an adsl connection with a static ip address assigned to my home network which is behind a nat router or adsl modem. I have redirected the standard rdc port to aim at my pc when an incoming connection arrives. When i aimed a connection from my work pc to my static ip except one little thing domain called eletrironica and ntlanct my PC is not on a domain at all.
My main computer's (XP, SP3) Internet connection is shared among 3 other machines via ICS. However, one machine (XP, SP3) - which runs a couple of P2P programs - usually loses its connectivity (even file sharing) after a few days. I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security on the main computer. I've tried disabling it (for testing purposes) to no avail. I've also disabled Windows Firewall on both machines with no improvement. Using a router is pointless because it freezes after a few days (due to the P2P programs). I've tried 4 or 5 different routers (even the "good" brands).
Is it simply an overload in terms of the number of connections possible? Does ICS, in principle, face the same problems as a typical router? Because I've even tried reducing the number of P2P programs to just one and also limiting the number of connections it makes. (Not to mention "fixing" the 'tcpip.sys' limit on both machines.) Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it?
I have formatted 2 separate computers this past week and both of them gave me trouble with the Adsl internet connection. Both computers have been formatted with the windows xp cd (1 home & 1 pro version respectively) & formatted in dos -> ntfs file system
computer 1
win xp home sp1
this computer worked well until i installed sp2 on it showing me 'limited connectivity)
computer 2
win xp pro sp2 incl on cd
this shows 'limited connectivity'
the strange thing about this is that i could connect both computers to my network without the warning & everything works fine but when configured as standalones and connect the internet adsl modem into the nic they give me this error. tried winsockfx & microsoft repair tool from their site but to no avail. the prob could be from sp2 as the computers dont give me errors without it but i installed my own personal computer with sp2 & never had any problems with my nic or adsl modem. Could it also be that i primarily connected them to my network b4 i tried configuring them?
I just got a laptop running XP home & my pc also runs XP home. I want to put a lot of date files on it, & some of them won't fit on a CD. Is there any way to conntect & send them with a USB cable?
View 4 Replies View RelatedSuddenly I cannot access IE or Firefox. A double click does nothing. I am using a Dell C-521pc with Win Xp as OS. The cable connection is OK (it glows) and I have tried all control panel operations I am aware of. I have tried RESTORE 3 times but the computer will not restore seemingly at any date. All other applications work OK and my e-mail w/Outlook Express works OK. Problem appears common to both FF and IE browzers. I am using another household computer to access this website. Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated
View 13 Replies View RelatedI joined the cable for my Internet connection because it wouldn't tie up my phone line when I was online.Since doing so I find things I'm trying to download, say Stationary for example.I keep getting this Screen looking thing with a bkue band down one side and a red circle with a red line through it at the bottom.
In order to download, I have to right click and of course, nothing turns out and won't show up when I download.
What download speed does CNET support? I currently am running Windows XP SP2 and have a 3meg cable connection. I'm downloading 3DMark08 which is 576meg.The software is only downloading at 90k/sec. I did a download test at PCPitstop and got a strong 2.9meg. I feel like I've gone back to the old 56k modem days!
View 4 Replies View RelatedLaptop one running winXP home edit. Connecting to broadband via usb client device. Connecting via rj45 crossover cable to. Laptop two running winME. I got to the point where I could actually run the "set up a home or small office network" on both computers, which enabled me to tenuously connect to the internet via the crossover cable. However, immediately after running the "set up....." on the XP machine it disabled the driver GUI for the usb client card. I was still connected, but couldn't see what I was doing.
There are many tutorials available out there, but there are so many permutations of OSs, hubs, client devices, and routers, that it's hard to find something that makes sense for me. I downloaded the "Microsoft Networking Guide" from msn and throughout it states in no uncertain terms that you must NOT use a crossover type cable. Yet in the help notes on the very same site there are plentiful hints on how to use a crossover cable. I'd like to use the crossover since it is "supposed" to be the simplest methond. But if I must go out and buy a hub device, I guess I must.
I am running Win XP SP2 on a 2.8 GHertz Pentium system with 1 GB memory. I
am using the Hosts file from the MVPS web site. It's size is about 274KB. I
have a Comcast cable connection. The MVPS web site states that a Hosts file larger than 135 KB may cause Internet Explorer to slow down and suggests changing the Startup Type of the DNS Client service from Automatic to Manual. However, as far as I can tell IE's performance does not obviously change if I disable Hosts (by renaming it) or change the Statup Type of the DNS Client service. I would character IE's performance in general as good to very good.
I'm running Windows XP, and I've been having trouble with my Recycle Bin lately. Whenever I delete something some time later my recycle bin empties. Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove Files immediately when deleted is unchecked, and the maximum size of Recycle Bin is at 18%. I moved it to 100 to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. I couldn't remember what it was at before, so I just put it to 18. Would anyone know what my problem is?

I have used windows 98 and currently use 2000 and have the same problem. I have tried an external hard drive and saved the file and then disconnected the USB cable and the same thing happens next time i connect it. I have formatted hard drive a couple of times and problem reoccurred both times.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe problem I'm having has changed over the past week, and every time I thought I was getting closer to being fixed, it got worse. Mcafee anti-virus did an auto-update, and right after that, windows lost all of it's file associations. I'm sure I can give more information upon request, and I look forward to working this out and maybe learning something.

When I turned on the computer again the random deleting had stopped, but I had lost my music files and my mail files. If this wasn't a virus, what else could cause this to happen?
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn Friday, I allowed the computer to install a number of security upgrades as well as a malicious software removal tool from MS. Since that reboot, the following things have happened: Got warning about failure of write back cache Blue screen about kernel that MS reported was due to bad HD. Finally able to boot into safe mode and found no HD errors. Thought registry corrupted, so tried to redo with a reload on top of the XP Pro but the program said it is older than that on computer (probably SP2) and won't let me reload.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI changed from a dial-up connection to cable (Road Runner). Since then, my search engines have changed (when I search from the IE address bar, it uses MSN search now), and many pages that load, although faster, have the message "error on page" at the bottom. Outlook Express became my default email with the Road Runner email address, but most of the time it does not respond. Also, several games are slow to respond or do not respond at all (specifically CSI games and Hunting Unlimited). I run adaware and spybot at least once a week if not more, and defrag regularly. Are there extra precautions I should take with a cable connection?

My question regards one of the practices of a local computer repair shop where I am currently interning... This practice is just one of a handful of procedures that is known as our Performance Tune-Up. It involves checking the size of the Documents and Settings folder, if this folder is above say four or five gigabytes the source of the reported data is to be found and moved to another folder on the root C: drive (a shortcut is then placed on the desktop so the user may access their data).

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy PC has been having problems with internet connectivity for about the last 2 - 3 months, and I can't seem to find what is causing (caused) it or how to fix it.See profile for full system specs, but more specifically to this problem, Marvell Yukon 88e8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet controller (updated the driver today) plugged into Netgear WGT624 wireless router running through Motorola SB4200 cable modem. Another PC connected wirelessly is not having any problem with the router. so I don't think there is any problem with it or the modem.System declared clean by AVG Pro, MS Anti-spyware, Adaware, Spybot, Trend Housecall.
After booting, warm or cold, after about 10 mins the internet connection drops out. Local Area Connection Status shows packets being sent, but nothing will recieve. My strong suspicion is that XP firewall is somehow corrupted, as I can't turn it off. I've found a way around this though, and that is to start ZoneAlarm, which is able to turn off XP firewall. After starting ZoneAlarm, I can then close it down and XP firewall kicks back in without any further problem although the connection FEELS slightly slower than in the first 10 mins before it drops out.
My sister has one desktop with Windows XP, one laptop with Windows XP and on laptop with Windows Vista. She wants me to network all three. I asked her if they were all wireless or what and this is what she sent me via email. Both laptops are and I think the pc we just took in the basement is because it was connected to the printer wireless. Why do you ask?The modem and router that were attached to the pc that is in the basement are now under a table in my bedroom and the laptops are connected to them wireless.
