Cable Internet Connection Wont Allow To Download?
Dec 22, 2005
I joined the cable for my Internet connection because it wouldn't tie up my phone line when I was online.Since doing so I find things I'm trying to download, say Stationary for example.I keep getting this Screen looking thing with a bkue band down one side and a red circle with a red line through it at the bottom.
In order to download, I have to right click and of course, nothing turns out and won't show up when I download.

What download speed does CNET support? I currently am running Windows XP SP2 and have a 3meg cable connection. I'm downloading 3DMark08 which is 576meg.The software is only downloading at 90k/sec. I did a download test at PCPitstop and got a strong 2.9meg. I feel like I've gone back to the old 56k modem days!

my cable is not working properly.Every 15-20 minutes my internet connection is broken even though the modem is online and there is no problem with the cable coming into my house. I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. I already talked to my ISP support but these guys are brain damaged or something and cannot even comprehend my problem and all 3 actually concluded that i had somehow contracted some killer virus immediately after connecting my computer and this virus was the root of my problems

Laptop one running winXP home edit. Connecting to broadband via usb client device. Connecting via rj45 crossover cable to. Laptop two running winME. I got to the point where I could actually run the "set up a home or small office network" on both computers, which enabled me to tenuously connect to the internet via the crossover cable. However, immediately after running the "set up....." on the XP machine it disabled the driver GUI for the usb client card. I was still connected, but couldn't see what I was doing.
There are many tutorials available out there, but there are so many permutations of OSs, hubs, client devices, and routers, that it's hard to find something that makes sense for me. I downloaded the "Microsoft Networking Guide" from msn and throughout it states in no uncertain terms that you must NOT use a crossover type cable. Yet in the help notes on the very same site there are plentiful hints on how to use a crossover cable. I'd like to use the crossover since it is "supposed" to be the simplest methond. But if I must go out and buy a hub device, I guess I must.

Suddenly I cannot access IE or Firefox. A double click does nothing. I am using a Dell C-521pc with Win Xp as OS. The cable connection is OK (it glows) and I have tried all control panel operations I am aware of. I have tried RESTORE 3 times but the computer will not restore seemingly at any date. All other applications work OK and my e-mail w/Outlook Express works OK. Problem appears common to both FF and IE browzers. I am using another household computer to access this website. Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated

I am running Win XP SP2 on a 2.8 GHertz Pentium system with 1 GB memory. I
am using the Hosts file from the MVPS web site. It's size is about 274KB. I
have a Comcast cable connection. The MVPS web site states that a Hosts file larger than 135 KB may cause Internet Explorer to slow down and suggests changing the Startup Type of the DNS Client service from Automatic to Manual. However, as far as I can tell IE's performance does not obviously change if I disable Hosts (by renaming it) or change the Statup Type of the DNS Client service. I would character IE's performance in general as good to very good.

After a power surge last night, I cannot bring up my cable internet. We've tried reinitializing the cable modem, restarted the computer multiple times, and tried everything else that seems logical. When we ran the command prompt c:>ipconfig/renew we got the error message:An internal error occurred: The system cannot find the file specified. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help. Additional information: Unknown media status code.

I changed from a dial-up connection to cable (Road Runner). Since then, my search engines have changed (when I search from the IE address bar, it uses MSN search now), and many pages that load, although faster, have the message "error on page" at the bottom. Outlook Express became my default email with the Road Runner email address, but most of the time it does not respond. Also, several games are slow to respond or do not respond at all (specifically CSI games and Hunting Unlimited). I run adaware and spybot at least once a week if not more, and defrag regularly. Are there extra precautions I should take with a cable connection?

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home on a friends computer, but when I went
to create their dialup connection to the internet, I couldn't.I went into the 'Internet Connection Wizard'. Told it that I was connecting directly to the internet. Then I told it I was going to set up the connection manually. But whenever the option comes up to setup a dial-up or broadband connection, the dial-up option is greyed out and unselectable. In device manager, it shows my modem as being fine. It's installed with no conflicts.

My guess is the router has a built-in firewall, which slows hemps download speed? I read 100Mbps with hard wired, and 54Mbps max with wireless.

After long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.

I have a number of XP computers (all SP2) connected to the Net via a wireless modem/router. Everything was fine until a few days ago when my connection speed dramatically slowed after being online for a few hours. This happens to all of the PCs in my home - so it's nothing internal to my PC. I tried to transfer a large file across the wireless network and it transferred fine (5Mb in 10 seconds). I can also connect to the router's web management software without problem. So it's not the wireless connection. Which leaves either my modem/router or my broadband connection. The router's "DSL" light is always on which infers that my broadband connection is OK. So that leaves my modem/router.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. I had Internet Explorer 7, and for about a month I would get a "Error: Operation Aborted" every now and then and I would have to open a new window, so Friday morning I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 Beta to see if it would remove the problem. It didn't, so I tried Firefox, but I found both IE 8 and Firefox to be annoying, so I decided to remove them both and go back to IE 7, but this caused a whole different problem. I think that I might have done something wrong while removing the programs because now IE doesn't work at all. Now whenever I click on IE, the IE screen will flash for about a second and then disappear.

One of the most frustrating things to have with a computer is a slow internet connection and 56K is about as slow as it gets these days. I feel the pain that 56K users have and hope that by following this thread they can experience a faster more reliable internet connection. There are a few things that one must understand prior to tweaking their 56K connections. The first is that it is actually a 53.3K connection since that is the speed that the FCC limits you to, on top of that most dialup users actually connect in the 40,000 – 50,000K range, which is excellent by dialup standards.

However, since the install i have been unable to establish a continuous connection. It starts and stops for no reason at all. I have been online and it loses connection saying there is no dial tone. A connection can be lost/found for no particular reason.
