Mar 25, 2005My guess is the router has a built-in firewall, which slows hemps download speed? I read 100Mbps with hard wired, and 54Mbps max with wireless.

Download Speed - 3meg Cable Connection
Aug 8, 2006What download speed does CNET support? I currently am running Windows XP SP2 and have a 3meg cable connection. I'm downloading 3DMark08 which is 576meg.The software is only downloading at 90k/sec. I did a download test at PCPitstop and got a strong 2.9meg. I feel like I've gone back to the old 56k modem days!

Apr 16, 2008I am using a DSL connection with a maximum download speed of upto 2MBPS but i usually recieve it for about 1-1.5MBPS. I have tried using Download Accelerator softwares to increase my speed but wuth those some spam also come into my computer so i am not using it anymore. Is there any way by which i can increase my internet speed by doing some changes in Windows internally. Also while using sharing sites my speed tends to fall to about 45KBPS.

Mar 12, 2005Although the tray icon says I am connected at 2.2MB ADSL, my download speeds are no better than when I had a 1Mb connection.All speed tests including Bts own show a download speed of only 126KB/sec.BT is unable to explain but believe its got something to do with my system rather than their service, which seems logical considering the tray icon shows 2MB connection.No antivirus running, only zone alarm.

The main reason it came to my attention was I've been downloading win updates from the catalog site to keep on my external drive for potential future use, and the download speed would randomly slow down.
I went into my Zone Alarm (free version 7.0.470.000) and looked at the programs currently granted permission to access the internet trusted zone. Among them was "Generic Host Process for win32 services". I changed the stauts to "Ask" and since then the intermittant activity has stopped, but I get the ZA popup asking for access by that svchost.exe executable
Cannot Configure Wireless Connection
Jan 18, 2007I have this one computer in my house that uses a Motorola wireless adapter to connect to an 802.11g network through a router. However, recently, the computer acted up. I reformatted it, and reinstalled the adapter software. However, i cannot access its control panel to configure any options. This i have no explanation for. I have no option to make windows use its own controls instead of the software's because i have no connection.

Hardwired Computer Into The Router
May 28, 2005I have 4 computers on a D-Link wireless router. My wife uses the wireless feature. All computers connect to the net flawlessly. The two downstairs computers are hardwired. One is a Pentium 120mh running Win98, the other is a P4 Running WinXP Pro. I started a Home network using the P4 and made up a Setup disk which I installed on the rest of the computers. The two downstairs computers and the wife's laptop all work with the network. A recently purchased Dell Dimension 3000 completes the system and it too was hardwired into the router but refuses to co-operate.It neither sees the work group or can be seen by the others. I have tried several things, including disabling the firewall, pinging seems to work fine. I tried contacting Dell, but that was a bust.

However, a windows disk didn't come with the computer so I used the one that came with my desktop (dell xps 400). It's running fine and all that jazz but I am clueless on how to set up my wireless connection. When I first bought the computer the first time I opened it it automatically picked up the wireless connection and all I had to do is type in a password and such. Now I guess I'm starting from scratch... There's no webcam software on it or anything like it came with. The resolution doesnt even fit the same after adjusting it. (It's close but still a little stretched out)

Oct 5, 2008XP has stopped connecting to my wireless connecter "Wireless Network Connection Not Connected" Device manager says everything is normal, and I can identify other local wireless networks. XP recognizes that the connector is there, but it won't hook up. I have disabled and reenabled the wireless connector and reloaded all of the Broadcom software. I tried to do an XP repair, but I am using SP3. The slipstream recovery disc that I made is asking for a password to get into XP, but there isn't any. I've verified this with three different password cracking programs. Everything else is working; I am on an Ethernet connection now.
how to force XP to connect or know what drivers I need to reload that are used to connect to the wireless connector besides the Broadcom's that I have already reloaded? I really don't want to do a complete XP reinstall.

Jul 23, 2009I reinstalled windows xp sp3 on a old laptop. Everything went fine except for internet connectivity. I have a wireless network to which I connect several computers and devices and everything works like it should.When I try to connect my laptop to this network, it fails.Every 5 seconds it goes from not connected to acquiring network address.I am sure that the key is correct, I am sure that my router is belkin router is wireless G and so is the Ralink RT2500 card. I am also sure that I have not white listed MAC addresses so my laptop won't connect. Basically I have done every simple thing that perhaps could be causing the problem.

It works fine that way, but when I plug the ethernet cable in directly to the DSL modem and shut down the router, I get the "page cannot be displayed" message, even though the icon shows that I am connected and the lights are green. Seems the only place he can connect to a wireless network is at his home.I now have the laptop trying to figure what the problem is. Here's what I found. I was able to connect to the internet via a wireless at my place. First on another friend's wireless unsecured connection. I was also able to connect via my own connection a WEP secured connection. Connectivity lasted for about 30 minutes. I was suddenly disconnected with a message saying the there was no connectivity via my WEP connection. I then tried the unsecured connection and was able to connect to the net at least for a few minutes. Since that time I've had some trouble connecting. I've opened a command prompt and entered ipconfig / release, then ipconfig /renew. It works on the unsecured wireless connection, but not on the WEP network.

Nov 15, 2007Computers are 2 identical Dell Latitude D600 with XP Pro.Dell #1 was given to me. It had never had ANY updates applied, had 56 Trojans and a bunch of other problems. I took it to the local library and used their WiFi connection to download Grisoft AVG, Ad-Aware and Microsoft Malware Removal to clean it up. I then was given an identical used Dell #2. it was at the SP2 level, so I again went to the library and updated this one with 85 XP updates.Then, as a learning experience, I restored XP Pro on Dell #1 from a Dell CD, P/N 1R594 and then installed SP2 on it. All went well.I then tried to use WiFi on Dell #1. I tried to create a new connection, but when I clicked on finish nothing got created.I looked at Dell #2 which has a working WiFi connection and noticed that when I click on All Programs I see an entry for Dell Wireless, containing 2 itemsDell Wireless WLAN card Readme and Dell Wireless WLAN card Utility This entry does not appear on Dell #1 even though I used it on a Wireless network prior to the XP PRO CD restore today.
