Laptop one running winXP home edit. Connecting to broadband via usb client device. Connecting via rj45 crossover cable to. Laptop two running winME. I got to the point where I could actually run the "set up a home or small office network" on both computers, which enabled me to tenuously connect to the internet via the crossover cable. However, immediately after running the "set up....." on the XP machine it disabled the driver GUI for the usb client card. I was still connected, but couldn't see what I was doing.
There are many tutorials available out there, but there are so many permutations of OSs, hubs, client devices, and routers, that it's hard to find something that makes sense for me. I downloaded the "Microsoft Networking Guide" from msn and throughout it states in no uncertain terms that you must NOT use a crossover type cable. Yet in the help notes on the very same site there are plentiful hints on how to use a crossover cable. I'd like to use the crossover since it is "supposed" to be the simplest methond. But if I must go out and buy a hub device, I guess I must.
my cable is not working properly.Every 15-20 minutes my internet connection is broken even though the modem is online and there is no problem with the cable coming into my house. I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. I already talked to my ISP support but these guys are brain damaged or something and cannot even comprehend my problem and all 3 actually concluded that i had somehow contracted some killer virus immediately after connecting my computer and this virus was the root of my problems
I seem to have a problem sharing the Internet between 2 pcs. The Internet connection lasts for a while & then, later on, it doesn't work. Is there any reason why this might be? The 2 pcs have Windows XP & they are both configured using the Network Connection Wizard. They should both work fine but they don't.
i try to share internet connections to play my xbox. Let me tell you what i am trying to do first and the error and i am getting. I have my internet connected threw USB dirctly to my modem. Then i have my crossover cable plug into my Xbox and the other end in my ethernet port.. And when i trying to bridge the connections i get a error on my xbox something about the DNS sever i try to fix that but i think its because I am not sharing my internet connection.. This is the error i get when i try. An error occurred while internet connection sharing was being enabled. The specified service does not exist as an installed service And here a screenshot of the error you can make it bigger for you can read it..
1. When I go to access my firewall I get an error saying "Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because of the associated service is not running. do you want to start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ics) service?" I then hit yes and "windows cannot start the windowsfirewall/internet connection sharing (ics) service"I went to microsoft and found info on it but as I read all it seemed to say was "blah blah tech talk tech talk blah blah blah" I got no where...I really did try! Did something take over my firewall should I be scared?
I joined the cable for my Internet connection because it wouldn't tie up my phone line when I was online.Since doing so I find things I'm trying to download, say Stationary for example.I keep getting this Screen looking thing with a bkue band down one side and a red circle with a red line through it at the bottom. In order to download, I have to right click and of course, nothing turns out and won't show up when I download.
I do not have an "Internet Connection Sharing" section when I go into the wireless network selection properties, and then click on advanced. All that is showing up is the windows firewall. I am using a Linksys Wireless G PCI network adaptor. I am on Windows XP, professional, 2002, SP2. Someone I know has the same system, but it is the media center edition and it has the ICS section under the advanced tab... I'm not sure if the media center edition has anything to do with it or not. Am I missing a driver? Is there anything that I can do about this?
i want to share a broadband internet connection between 2 computers. One is aready connected. what is the cheapest way to share the internet connection?
I'm trying to set my desktop up as computer that would allow others to connect through it. The desktop is upstairs and connects wirelessly to my router downstairs. I've loooked at some guides that explain how to set it up for sharing and they say to right click the connection, then go to properties, then advanced tab, and there will be the options for internet connection sharing. However, there are no options there that relate to "Internet Connection Sharing" only Windows Firewall with a "Settings" button.
I am doing volunteer work at an organization that is all volunteers. Since I have some IT skills they have asked me to manage their workgroups network of 8 computers. (This is really out of my field of expertise which is Oracle DB administration, but I enjoy the challenge of getting through the learning curve.)
To build up some hands-on knowledge and experience, I have acquired an extra computer and have installed Windows XP from scratch, i.e. on a completely re-formatted disk. I now want to connect it to our LAN in order to use printer and file sharing and our internet connection which is via a router (?residential gateway?).
How to config Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP but the instructions do not seem applicabale to our configuration (please see the last paragraph above). I have also tried wokring with the chapter "Setting Up a Workgroup Network" in David Pogue's book, "Windows XP Pro, The Missing Manual". After all is said and done on the client as an administrator or non-administrator, any time I try to go to a webpage via Internet Explorer, I get the message "The page cannot be displayed".
How do i stop a particular computer(client) from accessing internet from host computer running internet connection sharing? i have shared Internet by Internet Connection Sharing on Windows XP SP2. i have other computers running windows 98SE, at first the computer didnt get configured automatically, i had to create a network disc and run it on each PC to get internet access on those machines. Now i want one of those PC to be not able to acsess internet.
I had accidentally created a LAN connection, disabled, removed it, and had discovered the Internet Connection Sharing had disappeared, under the advanced tab of "Wireless Internet Connection". I have looked, and looked for a solution to this problem but can not find one. I had found a workaround, tried it, but it just caused my computer to freeze up.
I'm trying to share my internet connection with another connection. It's a wifi dongle for a wireless handheld. In order to get connectivity on this dongle, I need to share my connection. But when I attempt to do this, I recieve an error: "An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled This specified service does not exist as an installed service."
I'm using WinXP SP2 and I've searched on the Windows.com site for a while and downloaded some help files. But, it gives no indication on how to get ICS if you are getting this error. Does anyone have any tips or ideas on what I can try or how to get ICS? I've also reinstalled SP2, but I'm still not able to share my connection and recieve the same error. In Services I have Windows Management Instrumentation and Remote Access Manager but I don't have Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing listed.
My main computer's (XP, SP3) Internet connection is shared among 3 other machines via ICS. However, one machine (XP, SP3) - which runs a couple of P2P programs - usually loses its connectivity (even file sharing) after a few days. I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security on the main computer. I've tried disabling it (for testing purposes) to no avail. I've also disabled Windows Firewall on both machines with no improvement. Using a router is pointless because it freezes after a few days (due to the P2P programs). I've tried 4 or 5 different routers (even the "good" brands).
Is it simply an overload in terms of the number of connections possible? Does ICS, in principle, face the same problems as a typical router? Because I've even tried reducing the number of P2P programs to just one and also limiting the number of connections it makes. (Not to mention "fixing" the 'tcpip.sys' limit on both machines.) Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it?
Right after my computer is finishes booting, suddenly there's a prompt telling me that Internet Explorer wants to change my Internet Protection settings. Then it asks me if I want to give IE permission to change these settings. Of course not (I think?). And the problem is still there. I connect with Verizon DSL, but when I go on Internet Explorer, the browser doesn't work properly- it says "Web Page Unavavailable While Offline"- what's up with that?! I even checked the status of my connnection- "Connected"! It's just retarded.
Suddenly I cannot access IE or Firefox. A double click does nothing. I am using a Dell C-521pc with Win Xp as OS. The cable connection is OK (it glows) and I have tried all control panel operations I am aware of. I have tried RESTORE 3 times but the computer will not restore seemingly at any date. All other applications work OK and my e-mail w/Outlook Express works OK. Problem appears common to both FF and IE browzers. I am using another household computer to access this website. Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated
What download speed does CNET support? I currently am running Windows XP SP2 and have a 3meg cable connection. I'm downloading 3DMark08 which is 576meg.The software is only downloading at 90k/sec. I did a download test at PCPitstop and got a strong 2.9meg. I feel like I've gone back to the old 56k modem days!
I am running Win XP SP2 on a 2.8 GHertz Pentium system with 1 GB memory. I am using the Hosts file from the MVPS web site. It's size is about 274KB. I have a Comcast cable connection. The MVPS web site states that a Hosts file larger than 135 KB may cause Internet Explorer to slow down and suggests changing the Startup Type of the DNS Client service from Automatic to Manual. However, as far as I can tell IE's performance does not obviously change if I disable Hosts (by renaming it) or change the Statup Type of the DNS Client service. I would character IE's performance in general as good to very good.
After a power surge last night, I cannot bring up my cable internet. We've tried reinitializing the cable modem, restarted the computer multiple times, and tried everything else that seems logical. When we ran the command prompt c:>ipconfig/renew we got the error message:An internal error occurred: The system cannot find the file specified. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help. Additional information: Unknown media status code.
I have two computers at home which has both WinXP installed. One has a internet connection(host)(DSL) and i wanted my other computer(client) to onnect through host internet connection. My host has 2 lan card installed one supposed to be for internet sharing. I already run WinXP Network Setup Wizard on both computers and both has same range of IP buth still i cannot share my internet connection. If I will be using cross cable connection, still anything else i need to configure aside from running Network setup Wizard and checking the Allow others to connect to this internet connection? Is it possible to use a hub to share internet connection, since I dont have a broadband router? How about using a wireless network because i do have one, how can i share internet using access point. How can i configure it? Is it also possible that i use hub so that i have my access point connect to it and i still have ports to connect using utp cable network.
i once used the snails route (dialup). Now I use charter comm. costly for its connection (384K DOWN/128kup)cost per month almost 50.00..Any ofyou folks out there know of a better deal? no tv line needed.
I was on here about 2 months ago and got my computer running really fast with the help here. I just want to know if you guys could help me out to clean it to make it run faster.
I changed from a dial-up connection to cable (Road Runner). Since then, my search engines have changed (when I search from the IE address bar, it uses MSN search now), and many pages that load, although faster, have the message "error on page" at the bottom. Outlook Express became my default email with the Road Runner email address, but most of the time it does not respond. Also, several games are slow to respond or do not respond at all (specifically CSI games and Hunting Unlimited). I run adaware and spybot at least once a week if not more, and defrag regularly. Are there extra precautions I should take with a cable connection?
my pc broke down so i reinstalled windows xp with a disc, i lost all the files on it (not a prob) but i cant get my internet to work on it. its says there is no connection but i know there is cos i have it running on this one. its a cable modem for virgin media. i get a message saying registry for internet is corrupted?
I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home on a friends computer, but when I went to create their dialup connection to the internet, I couldn't.I went into the 'Internet Connection Wizard'. Told it that I was connecting directly to the internet. Then I told it I was going to set up the connection manually. But whenever the option comes up to setup a dial-up or broadband connection, the dial-up option is greyed out and unselectable. In device manager, it shows my modem as being fine. It's installed with no conflicts.
At present I connect to my broadband ISP using a wireless router. So that I can keep a previous email address active I need to log on to an old Pay As You Go dial up connection at least once every 60 days . I have set up the the connection in 'Network connection' in the control panel but get the error " no dial tone " when i try to use it, Should i be disconnecting the router and plugging in the phone cable to the PC directly as we did in pre broadband, dial up only days . Advise please on how to best ' cable ' the set up
I'm trying to help a mate set up a wireless network to share his new adsl connection between 2 desktop pc's in different parts of the house. He has a modem/router and a switch/wireless ap device, and a usb wireless dongle each machine. Have had all sorts of problems, solved one by one, but for this last one. One of the pc's works fine (Win XP Home), while the other one times out with any internet access attemp (Wn XP Pro sp2). He doesn't need the pc's to talk to each other, only to the internet. one is his and the other his wifes, and they both have work stuff on their machines and don't do lan parties etc. He just wants to get online at the same time. From the machine that doesn't work, I can ping the other pc, the AP, and the modem router fine, but it can't find anything beyond the modem.
If I ping a domain name rather than ip address, it can't even find a dns server to resolve the name. I have spent hours going over and over all the settings. Both machines are set up identically in every respect (relevant to the network that is) but for the fact that one is XP Home and the other XP Pro. Both use only Windows Firewall, and in fact for testing, I've disabled firewall completely on the recalcitrant machine. Both use the same AP, switch, router and modem, and get their IP from the same dhcp server in the modem. I can't figure out why one is working, and the other isn't. My last "long shot" is some difference between XP home and XP Pro. I've never used Pro before, but figured that there shouldn't be a difference for the simple stuff I need to achieve here. but hopefully, I might be wrong?
I have four computers on a LAN (Local Area Network)Three of them are on Windows XP Professional, the other is in Windows 2000 Yesterday, The Windows 2000 system ceased connecting to the internet. I went and checked all of the TCP/IP Information in it and I can find nothing wrong with it. About fifteen minutes later my XP ceased connecting to the net, I checked all info there and as far as I can see there is nothing wrong with my system settings nor hardware.
I got a Toshiba with windows XP.. Its an older laptop and runs slow.. which is fine for what i need it for.. It is connected through a Dlink Cable modem. Recently moved and had a DSL connection of 3 years no problems. Had to switch to cable broadband. The lights all light up solid no problem. Network cable connected to no problem. Problem : NO internet
