Internet Connection Sharing Via ICS - Loses Connectivity
Dec 3, 2009
My main computer's (XP, SP3) Internet connection is shared among 3 other machines via ICS. However, one machine (XP, SP3) - which runs a couple of P2P programs - usually loses its connectivity (even file sharing) after a few days. I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security on the main computer. I've tried disabling it (for testing purposes) to no avail. I've also disabled Windows Firewall on both machines with no improvement. Using a router is pointless because it freezes after a few days (due to the P2P programs). I've tried 4 or 5 different routers (even the "good" brands).
Is it simply an overload in terms of the number of connections possible? Does ICS, in principle, face the same problems as a typical router? Because I've even tried reducing the number of P2P programs to just one and also limiting the number of connections it makes. (Not to mention "fixing" the 'tcpip.sys' limit on both machines.) Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it?

I have formatted 2 separate computers this past week and both of them gave me trouble with the Adsl internet connection. Both computers have been formatted with the windows xp cd (1 home & 1 pro version respectively) & formatted in dos -> ntfs file system
computer 1
win xp home sp1
this computer worked well until i installed sp2 on it showing me 'limited connectivity)
computer 2
win xp pro sp2 incl on cd
this shows 'limited connectivity'
the strange thing about this is that i could connect both computers to my network without the warning & everything works fine but when configured as standalones and connect the internet adsl modem into the nic they give me this error. tried winsockfx & microsoft repair tool from their site but to no avail. the prob could be from sp2 as the computers dont give me errors without it but i installed my own personal computer with sp2 & never had any problems with my nic or adsl modem. Could it also be that i primarily connected them to my network b4 i tried configuring them?

I seem to have a problem sharing the Internet between 2 pcs. The Internet connection lasts for a while & then, later on, it doesn't work. Is there any reason why this might be? The 2 pcs have Windows XP & they are both configured using the Network Connection Wizard. They should both work fine but they don't.

1. When I go to access my firewall I get an error saying "Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because of the associated service is not running. do you want to start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ics) service?"
I then hit yes and "windows cannot start the windowsfirewall/internet connection sharing (ics) service"I went to microsoft and found info on it but as I read all it seemed to say was "blah blah tech talk tech talk blah blah blah" I got no where...I really did try! Did something take over my firewall should I be scared?

I do not have an "Internet Connection Sharing" section when I go into the wireless network selection properties, and then click on advanced. All that is showing up is the windows firewall. I am using a Linksys Wireless G PCI network adaptor. I am on Windows XP, professional, 2002, SP2. Someone I know has the same system, but it is the media center edition and it has the ICS section under the advanced tab... I'm not sure if the media center edition has anything to do with it or not. Am I missing a driver? Is there anything that I can do about this?

I'm trying to set my desktop up as computer that would allow others to connect through it. The desktop is upstairs and connects wirelessly to my router downstairs. I've loooked at some guides that explain how to set it up for sharing and they say to right click the connection, then go to properties, then advanced tab, and there will be the options for internet connection sharing. However, there are no options there that relate to "Internet Connection Sharing" only Windows Firewall with a "Settings" button.

I am doing volunteer work at an organization that is all volunteers. Since I have some IT skills they have asked me to manage their workgroups network of 8 computers. (This is really out of my field of expertise which is Oracle DB administration, but I enjoy the challenge of getting through the learning curve.)
To build up some hands-on knowledge and experience, I have acquired an extra computer and have installed Windows XP from scratch, i.e. on a completely re-formatted disk. I now want to connect it to our LAN in order to use printer and file sharing and our internet connection which is via a router (?residential gateway?).
How to config Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP but the instructions do not seem applicabale to our configuration (please see the last paragraph above). I have also tried wokring with the chapter "Setting Up a Workgroup Network" in David Pogue's book, "Windows XP Pro, The Missing Manual". After all is said and done on the client as an administrator or non-administrator, any time I try to go to a webpage via Internet Explorer, I get the message "The page cannot be displayed".

Laptop one running winXP home edit. Connecting to broadband via usb client device. Connecting via rj45 crossover cable to. Laptop two running winME. I got to the point where I could actually run the "set up a home or small office network" on both computers, which enabled me to tenuously connect to the internet via the crossover cable. However, immediately after running the "set up....." on the XP machine it disabled the driver GUI for the usb client card. I was still connected, but couldn't see what I was doing.
There are many tutorials available out there, but there are so many permutations of OSs, hubs, client devices, and routers, that it's hard to find something that makes sense for me. I downloaded the "Microsoft Networking Guide" from msn and throughout it states in no uncertain terms that you must NOT use a crossover type cable. Yet in the help notes on the very same site there are plentiful hints on how to use a crossover cable. I'd like to use the crossover since it is "supposed" to be the simplest methond. But if I must go out and buy a hub device, I guess I must.

I had accidentally created a LAN connection, disabled, removed it, and had discovered the Internet Connection Sharing had disappeared, under the advanced tab of "Wireless Internet Connection". I have looked, and looked for a solution to this problem but can not find one. I had found a workaround, tried it, but it just caused my computer to freeze up.

I'm trying to share my internet connection with another connection. It's a wifi dongle for a wireless handheld. In order to get connectivity on this dongle, I need to share my connection. But when I attempt to do this, I recieve an error: "An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled This specified service does not exist as an installed service."
I'm using WinXP SP2 and I've searched on the Windows.com site for a while and downloaded some help files. But, it gives no indication on how to get ICS if you are getting this error. Does anyone have any tips or ideas on what I can try or how to get ICS? I've also reinstalled SP2, but I'm still not able to share my connection and recieve the same error. In Services I have Windows Management Instrumentation and Remote Access Manager but I don't have Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing listed.

Right after my computer is finishes booting, suddenly there's a prompt telling me that Internet Explorer wants to change my Internet Protection settings. Then it asks me if I want to give IE permission to change these settings. Of course not (I think?). And the problem is still there. I connect with Verizon DSL, but when I go on Internet Explorer, the browser doesn't work properly- it says "Web Page Unavavailable While Offline"- what's up with that?! I even checked the status of my connnection- "Connected"! It's just retarded.

I have been fixing a computer with more spyware than you could imagine on it. Its all clean now , all trojans and spyware removed, however in the process of removing these nasties, the computer has now lost its ability to connect to the internet. Networks fine, all obvious things have been checked, firewall, proxies you name it. Is there a way to re-install the internet connectivity services and files?

My dads new laptop is running fine except for the fact that we cannot get it to connect to the internet at all.I've searched these forums, as well as on google and tried a few fixes such as the official microsoft fix with the regestry entry but nothing is working at all. I'm planning on setting up a wireless network pretty soon and would like to get his computer online.I know the modem is working fine because my computer connects perfectly and I know the cable is fine beccause at the moment I'm using the same cable, just switching them back and forth.

I'm running XP Home Edition. A few days back I contracted one of those viruses that hi-jacks IE, but I was able to catch it before it completely installed. I used Malwarebytes, AVG and SuperAntiVirus to get rid of it and (after several scans) I'm now pretty certain that my system is 100% clean.Nevertheless, under the one user account that was infected AND in Admin (Safe Mode), programs like IE, Firefox, and Rhapsody can no longer find an Internet connection. Also Malwarebytes and SuperAntiVirus can't find their respective update servers. However, Bittorrent and Outlook still work fine and I can still ping IPs and Web addresses from the command window. The other odd thing is that one user account (on the same computer and that does not have Admin privileges) is still working perfectly.

But, my any other methods of accessing the internet do not work! I can't surf using a web-browser, my IM clients do not work, and I can't play any of the online games. I can still share files with computers on my local network.

my cable is not working properly.Every 15-20 minutes my internet connection is broken even though the modem is online and there is no problem with the cable coming into my house. I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. I already talked to my ISP support but these guys are brain damaged or something and cannot even comprehend my problem and all 3 actually concluded that i had somehow contracted some killer virus immediately after connecting my computer and this virus was the root of my problems

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home on a friends computer, but when I went
to create their dialup connection to the internet, I couldn't.I went into the 'Internet Connection Wizard'. Told it that I was connecting directly to the internet. Then I told it I was going to set up the connection manually. But whenever the option comes up to setup a dial-up or broadband connection, the dial-up option is greyed out and unselectable. In device manager, it shows my modem as being fine. It's installed with no conflicts.

I'm trying to help a mate set up a wireless network to share his new adsl connection between 2 desktop pc's in different parts of the house. He has a modem/router and a switch/wireless ap device, and a usb wireless dongle each machine. Have had all sorts of problems, solved one by one, but for this last one. One of the pc's works fine (Win XP Home), while the other one times out with any internet access attemp (Wn XP Pro sp2). He doesn't need the pc's to talk to each other, only to the internet. one is his and the other his wifes, and they both have work stuff on their machines and don't do lan parties etc. He just wants to get online at the same time. From the machine that doesn't work, I can ping the other pc, the AP, and the modem router fine, but it can't find anything beyond the modem.
If I ping a domain name rather than ip address, it can't even find a dns server to resolve the name. I have spent hours going over and over all the settings. Both machines are set up identically in every respect (relevant to the network that is) but for the fact that one is XP Home and the other XP Pro. Both use only Windows Firewall, and in fact for testing, I've disabled firewall completely on the recalcitrant machine. Both use the same AP, switch, router and modem, and get their IP from the same dhcp server in the modem. I can't figure out why one is working, and the other isn't. My last "long shot" is some difference between XP home and XP Pro. I've never used Pro before, but figured that there shouldn't be a difference for the simple stuff I need to achieve here. but hopefully, I might be wrong?

About fifteen minutes later my XP ceased connecting to the net, I checked all info there and as far as I can see there is nothing wrong with my system settings nor hardware.

After long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.
