I have been fixing a computer with more spyware than you could imagine on it. Its all clean now , all trojans and spyware removed, however in the process of removing these nasties, the computer has now lost its ability to connect to the internet. Networks fine, all obvious things have been checked, firewall, proxies you name it. Is there a way to re-install the internet connectivity services and files?
My main computer's (XP, SP3) Internet connection is shared among 3 other machines via ICS. However, one machine (XP, SP3) - which runs a couple of P2P programs - usually loses its connectivity (even file sharing) after a few days. I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security on the main computer. I've tried disabling it (for testing purposes) to no avail. I've also disabled Windows Firewall on both machines with no improvement. Using a router is pointless because it freezes after a few days (due to the P2P programs). I've tried 4 or 5 different routers (even the "good" brands).
Is it simply an overload in terms of the number of connections possible? Does ICS, in principle, face the same problems as a typical router? Because I've even tried reducing the number of P2P programs to just one and also limiting the number of connections it makes. (Not to mention "fixing" the 'tcpip.sys' limit on both machines.) Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it?
I have formatted 2 separate computers this past week and both of them gave me trouble with the Adsl internet connection. Both computers have been formatted with the windows xp cd (1 home & 1 pro version respectively) & formatted in dos -> ntfs file system
computer 1 win xp home sp1
this computer worked well until i installed sp2 on it showing me 'limited connectivity)
computer 2 win xp pro sp2 incl on cd
this shows 'limited connectivity'
the strange thing about this is that i could connect both computers to my network without the warning & everything works fine but when configured as standalones and connect the internet adsl modem into the nic they give me this error. tried winsockfx & microsoft repair tool from their site but to no avail. the prob could be from sp2 as the computers dont give me errors without it but i installed my own personal computer with sp2 & never had any problems with my nic or adsl modem. Could it also be that i primarily connected them to my network b4 i tried configuring them?
My dads new laptop is running fine except for the fact that we cannot get it to connect to the internet at all.I've searched these forums, as well as on google and tried a few fixes such as the official microsoft fix with the regestry entry but nothing is working at all. I'm planning on setting up a wireless network pretty soon and would like to get his computer online.I know the modem is working fine because my computer connects perfectly and I know the cable is fine beccause at the moment I'm using the same cable, just switching them back and forth.
I'm running XP Home Edition. A few days back I contracted one of those viruses that hi-jacks IE, but I was able to catch it before it completely installed. I used Malwarebytes, AVG and SuperAntiVirus to get rid of it and (after several scans) I'm now pretty certain that my system is 100% clean.Nevertheless, under the one user account that was infected AND in Admin (Safe Mode), programs like IE, Firefox, and Rhapsody can no longer find an Internet connection. Also Malwarebytes and SuperAntiVirus can't find their respective update servers. However, Bittorrent and Outlook still work fine and I can still ping IPs and Web addresses from the command window. The other odd thing is that one user account (on the same computer and that does not have Admin privileges) is still working perfectly.
I lose internet connectivity after a variable period of time of being logged into my computer. I can actually ping and do tracerts to verify that I can "see" the internet. But, my any other methods of accessing the internet do not work! I can't surf using a web-browser, my IM clients do not work, and I can't play any of the online games. I can still share files with computers on my local network.
I've read here that IIS cannot be installed on XP Home Edition, so OK to that. But is there some other (Free?) non-Windows utility that I can install on my XP operating system that will do the same thing for me?
I have had the Fax services running fine on my computer before, however just recently I had to reinstall my printer drivers and for some reason the installed Fax also disappeared. In the Add Windows Components screen, the tick is now missing from Fax services. If I tick the box, it looks like it is installing the Fax services software, however on going back into the Add Windows Components screen the tick is still missing and I cannot install a Fax.
I don't think I have IIS installed on my win 2000 server correctly so I wondering In the windows components wizard, IIS is checked off but the box is grey.
If I disable indexing services will that not allow me to search for files on my comp? Say wma's or mp3's or other file types. What will be the result of disabling it?
I'm looking for Tapisrv (Telephony Service). I've looked under MMC services panel, and it seems to be missing. I've added an old internal 56K modem after the install. While everything seems to have installed okay, the computer seems to think that I have no modem (drivers are okay). A browse through the event log shows that the Tapisrv is n/a. Are all services not installed for the first time? If not, then how to add a service? I've just moved to XP, so I'm unfamiliar with it.
I have been having an ongoing problem in being able to install programs (diskeeper and Symantec) after I have downloaded them. Their advice to me has been to double click the "Event Log" in my Services list and set it to automatic. I have just realized that the title, "Event Log" does not exist in my list and I think that may be my problem. Recently, I upgraded my Windows XP Pro from a pirated version by paying for and installing the Genuine Windows XP Pro version. I had then installed SP2. I wonder if in all of this I have lost the Event Log heading and if anyone can tell me how I can get it back.
My OS is win XP MCE 2005, recently re-installed following crash. Problem: Cannot access any MCE TV capabilities, as i get message from MCE settings: "Tuner card not found...." Can play DVD's however. OEM Tuner card is ATI Theater 550 Pro. Not recognized in device manager. Have downloaded & installed driver for this tuner. Have spent hours online looking for solution. Also, noticed I am missing both "Media Center Scheduler Service" & "Media Center Receiver Service" from my services directory, and think this may be related to problem. Any thoughts overall on how to fix, and specifically, how to restore both of these missing services files?
I have recently had to reinstall my PC from scratch. I bought a new WD Raptor 150GB as my main hard disk, my old 320GB Hard Disk that I used for my old install has been plugged into the second SATA port, and I have a 500GB Western Digital MyBook for extra storage and backup.Recently the new setup has been acting up worse than the old setup. These problems aren't regular but they occur in clumps -for example I would have to restart the system at least 4 times before I get a stable platformproblem includes the error message of General Host Services Has encountered an error etc along with the option to send an error report.
Sometimes its different programs that crash, including NOD 32, Media Center Receiver Service, CLI (which I think is something to do with my sound card) and other random programs including HMI, SVCHOST. When one or all of these programs crash one after the other, the entire system slows down and becomes practically inoperable. Invoking task manager doesn't help either as it takes a good 10 minutes to appear.
My PC has been having problems with internet connectivity for about the last 2 - 3 months, and I can't seem to find what is causing (caused) it or how to fix it.See profile for full system specs, but more specifically to this problem, Marvell Yukon 88e8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet controller (updated the driver today) plugged into Netgear WGT624 wireless router running through Motorola SB4200 cable modem. Another PC connected wirelessly is not having any problem with the router. so I don't think there is any problem with it or the modem.System declared clean by AVG Pro, MS Anti-spyware, Adaware, Spybot, Trend Housecall.
After booting, warm or cold, after about 10 mins the internet connection drops out. Local Area Connection Status shows packets being sent, but nothing will recieve. My strong suspicion is that XP firewall is somehow corrupted, as I can't turn it off. I've found a way around this though, and that is to start ZoneAlarm, which is able to turn off XP firewall. After starting ZoneAlarm, I can then close it down and XP firewall kicks back in without any further problem although the connection FEELS slightly slower than in the first 10 mins before it drops out.
My sister has one desktop with Windows XP, one laptop with Windows XP and on laptop with Windows Vista. She wants me to network all three. I asked her if they were all wireless or what and this is what she sent me via email. Both laptops are and I think the pc we just took in the basement is because it was connected to the printer wireless. Why do you ask?The modem and router that were attached to the pc that is in the basement are now under a table in my bedroom and the laptops are connected to them wireless.
I can't seem to fix this problem on my computer, it wouldn't go on online with either foxfire or internet explorer. So I did the network diagnostic and it said that the connection was repaired but it only works for a couple sites then it fails again.message comes up HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity required
The state of my computer has been in steady decline. It all started when i got a message from my nortons internet security that winlogon.exe was trying to contact the internet.I ran hijckthis, i ran spybot, i ran ad-aware. fixed items i thought needed to be fixed. I don't know if it was before or after all this, but i began getting pop ups from sites i know do not have pop ups, like my own. ran all the programs again. the same offenders keep popping up... i have posted my logs on this site but sadly no one had responded.anyway, now every time i restart my computer, I get a dll error. every time it is a different dll. also, when on for an extended amount of time, say overnight, i lose internet connectivity, even though my cable modem is showing that there is lots of activity going on.can anyone givew me a clue what's going on, or where i can begin looking? should i just scrap it all and reformat my computer?
I've been trying to connect to my home pc using a remote desktop connection. I have an adsl connection with a static ip address assigned to my home network which is behind a nat router or adsl modem. I have redirected the standard rdc port to aim at my pc when an incoming connection arrives. When i aimed a connection from my work pc to my static ip except one little thing domain called eletrironica and ntlanct my PC is not on a domain at all.
My computer say "limited or no connectivity" when I startup my desktop PC. I have reset the cable modem. I have called my cable company and they tried to do a remote reboot of the cable modem. I have uninstalled software I recently installed in case of a conflict with applications. My cable company also walked me through doing ntsh, I think it is, in the run box to try to reset my connection. I have disabled and re-enabled my local area connection. I have run chkdsk and it "found one or more errors on the volume", which it repaired. All this and I still have no internet connection. I'm entering this from a remote terminal so I'll download HijackThis to my memory stick to run a scan. I'm also going to do the Network Diagnostics. If you have any suggestions in the meantime, feel free to suggest.
My system totally crashed. I reformatted the drive and reinstall XP. Well, everything seems to be going along just fine until I get to 70% finished with copying installation files and I get message after message saying that the files cannot be copied.
There are many files listed in this folder. I am unable to delete them. When I go to this directory in safe mode command prompt there are no files. I even used dir /A:H to included hidden files and there are none. But I can still see them in Windows XP PRO. I have Norton 360 and it did not find any viruses. Went I try to delete them windows gives no errors. Some of the files even have the same name and extension. Is there a cache or a temp file I need to delete first?
I just did a clean install of windows xp pro sp1, After I download and install SP2 ,I go to get on the net I lose the connection after about 2-3 minutes. What is the deal? After I remove Sp2 using Add/remove in control panel, the net works great. I quess Im trying to say I cant install Sp2 without Losing the Internet. I ran Sp2 for mounths without a hitch. I do run Norton System works 2005 if that matters.
