My computer is in real need of a reformat and I have an OEM version of Windows XP Home. Will I be able to reformat and reinstall windows using it? I've heard that you can only do that with retail.
View 4 RepliesI reinstall Windows XP Home because My computer was messed up. It deleted all my files.. so on my desktop screen I don't have any Program Files Icons. BUT it still save my Files. I have my orginial files in my Documents folders and In my Program Files It has all the Programs and files that go with that program? How do I zap everything back on my desktop screen so I don't have to go Download each files as new again??? And I how do i get my Internet Favorite Links and my Notepad with my saved information in it? Yes I did try the "Start" and then program files and none of the programs are there.. BUT yet it is in my Program Hard drive C: Program files. with the Program and all it's content?

Earlier I had installed windows XP on the first hard drive (40GB) and was using second hard drive as additional storage. I had partitioned my second hard drive into 5 partitions P, Q, R, S, T. Recently I reformatted my first hard drive and reinstalled windows XP. However this has also affected my second hard drive. Now Windows shows only two drives C: (my first hard drive) and D: (second hard drive) as only one partition each. Moreover it is not showing any data on the second hard drive. I want to get back my parition info and data on the second hard drive. I thought that formatting my first drive will not affect second drive and therefore didn't take back up of the second drive. What shall I do to get back my data and partition info.

However, the info to re-format my Win XP HD seems to be highly classified and compartmentalized, and although I've looked, I can't seem to find any step by step instructions on how to do it without creating a bootable floppy disk, as my computer has 2 DVD drives but no floppy drive, and even if that were not a problem, finding the correct application/s to do the job and using it/them in the correct sequence also seems to be well hidden and a mystery.Can some one please point me to a document that goes through this procedure step by step, that is how to re-format an NTFS HD and re-install Win XP without a floppy drive.

I wanted to format and instead install XP Pro from a CD that I have already. Surprise, surprise. The dang laptop won't boot from the XP Pro cd but boots up fine with the recovery XP Home cd that it comes with.I read somewhere that Compaq and HP block the computer from reading other OS's. Don't know why.The question is, how do I unlock it? I don't want to install XP Home and then upgrade to XP Pro.

I have just reinstalled XP pro and now on booting, no option to choose either operating system appears. I have done some searching and have seen references to copying a boot file from the CD and placing it into the XP home operating system to fix this. The instructions were not that detailed and not directly related to having 2 XP installs. nearly all search results I have found related to Xp dual booting with Vista. I have been thinking of now copying ALL the files from the XP Home operating system into the new XP Pro and then reinstalling the XP Home system. Sigh. I cannot use the system repair/recovery option as I do not know the Admin password. where did I put that? Is there an easy fix to get the dual boot working again?

This has been a problem because I went to go do an upgrade from the Microsoft site but it said I was probably a victim of fake windows. So that's what I am more worried about because I got the windows XP program from Sony pre-loaded.
Also I dunno if this has to do with Windows or not. But my Matshita UJ-810 dvd/cd drive will not open when I click it's eject button. I have to use iTunes to open it. Also it seems to be unable to read cds.

(I got the "Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility" message).I changed the order to the disk drive under the setup utility and was able to get it to recognize the Windows XP Install CD but that's where I'm unsure what to do. It gives me the option to either set up Windows or repair using Recovery Console.If I reinstall will I lose all the files on my computer? I changed the boot order to boot from CD and everything goes fine, files load etc. It asks a few questions during the loading which I answer and all goes fine. Then after it loads the files it finally asks 'are you sure you want to proceed' but at that point everything USB fails including the keyboard, so I can't tell it Yes to proceed. There is no other port to plug in an input device other than the 6 usb ports. Is there a way to get around this?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 5100. Its sevice tag # is H65WK31. It's been running really slowly and had a bunch of stuff on it. When I tried to dfragment and stuff it shut down. In the end, I decided to just strip the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP (which is what it had.) The reinstallation went surprisingly well since I don't know the first thing about computers. At first it wouldn't play sounds or let me add or update Adobe flash or anything. I went into Device manager and found yellow exclamation points beside several thing and updated drivers and that fixed everything except beside Other Devices, it has the yellow exclamation mark. Underneath that, it says Video Controller (VGA compatible) and has a yellow exclamation mark beside it. It won't let me update the drivers. It says "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software." I have a CD that I may or may not have come with this DELL (I have several over the years.) It says it's from ATI. I tried to put it in and go through the cd to update the drivers. I get a message that says the same thing. When I got my computer, it seems like I had an upgrade on the video card, but all that was done before my computer left the factory. As it stands, I have a picture, but it looks like I'm in safe mode.
