I bought Win XP Pro SP 2 OEM and want to upgrade some computers - it will be a major hassle to backup the info. & re-load all the programs: can someone confirm it can be upgraded over the top of Win XP Home without reformatting?

When I turn the pc on I am confronted with a black screen that has a flashing cursor in the top left corner.To get the machine to do anything else I have to restart the computer and enter the BBS Setup by pressing F11 and selecting the optical drive that contains the XP disc.A message appears telling me that Setup is inspecting my hardware configuration.Next, a blue screen appears with 'Windows Setup' in the top left hand corner.

View 14 Replies View RelatedThis started out as a bad NTOSKRNL.exe issue, eventually after using the boot dist to get me to the comand prompt (via boot disk) I tried using a chkdsk /r for this issue.It would go up to 80%. hti back to 50% and creep along and it almost took 2 hours for a partial (though not complete scan of the disk) normal chkdsk finds no errors odd.I cannot go through with the XP setup repair, because it goes to the above error.The harddrive light at the moment is almost steady on, though the 'read/write' noise is intermittent.I am trying to load thos CPU without f disking this but it seems like the little boy at the dyke analogy, one hole gets plugged and another opens up.

They tried setting up their computer and it is giving them the message about the file missing or corrupt (something similiar to this- I may have the order wrong: c:windowsconfigsystem 32) We printed off the directions from Microsoft for the recovery console. The first two files to copy regarding system and software indicate they "cannot be copied" however, the last three were able to be copied. I stopped my efforts there since the first two didn't work. I noticed a prior post indicated I could ignore the first two copy commands, is that correct? Or can I try a repair in the reinstall option? What should I try first? Unhooking the printer/speakers? Hardware issue? If that fails, try F8 and use last known configuration? If that works, do I do a system restore? When would I use "safe mode?" We are at different houses w/o wireless so I am trying to get all info I can before heading back over there.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running XP, home edition. I've tried tweaks to improve start up time, used regedit, msconfig, turned off some automatic star-up programs, and used Registry Mechanic. When I tried to restart the computer, I'd be brought to the "Welcome" user selection screen. After selecting a user, the Desktop would load without icons or the taskbar (cursor appears), then after a few seconds, goes back to the Welcome screen. The few seconds I have in Windows, I tried bringing up the Task Manager, but it doesn't work. Also, when I click to load Disk Cleanup, nothing happens. Is there a fix for this?

(Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report this problem as: load needed DLLs for kernel). When I try to run windows recovery counsel, run in any of the 3 safe modes, try to repair windows with the CD, try to reformat the hard drive, try to reinstall windows, or anything else I forgot to mention I get this error message (A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA STOP: 0x00000050 (0xc47c0000, 0x00000000, 0x8081b123, 0x00000000).I have looked both of these errors up on Microsoft's website but it does not give me any helpful information on the problem since I am unable to boot in any kind of mode including all of the safe modes as previous stated. I even tried hooking it up as a slave in another computer to try and reformat the HD but for some reason the error message seems to still pop up when I turn the other computer on.
View 4 Replies View RelatedFirst my computer was cutting off in the middle of any program. I decided to delete everything on the drive and reformat it and reload windows xp. While trying to load windows xp it would load the set up but when going to load files it locked up everytime. I tried also loading windows 98, 95 and they too locked up. At one point it said I had a virus in my boot sector and at another time it said I had a virus in my RAM. I got a program called PC Beginner to help partition my drive and redo the MBR. I can partition the drive and format it but windows still doesn't load. Now I wonder if there is a problem with the mother board and I have a dual bios board, I was wonder if there is a program loaded in the dual bios that may somehow causing my problem. If so what can be done to clear the problem? How can I get windows reloaded?

4. Ran Norton Antivirus 2007 boot with CD - no virus found
5.Prior to crash desktop went RED, hence I rebooted and then the issues.
PC was rebooted and this message showed up. I couldn't get to safe mode so I put the XP disc in. I got to the D:winint dir and tried to run bootcfg to scan for the boot file. It came back that it couldn't find it. I was able to see the dir's and data on the 2 drives. I ran chkdsk to see if that would solve the problem, it didn't. Do you think this is a BIOS problem or a missing boot problem. If it was the BIOS would I be able to read the drive. Looking for a fix without destroying everything.

Im reformatting my computer with the OS CD it came with: Windows xp. I think its service pack 2. While re-installing i get the error: Setup cannot copy file: cinemst2.sys .It gives me the options to retry, skip the file or quit the setup. What should I do? What will happen if i exit the setup now? I selected retry and i get the same thing.

View 1 Replies View Relatedam trying to reformat a Dell Dimension on Windows XP Home, and have never had a problem like this, don't know what I am missing, the machine was purchased with XP home on it, and there is a reinstall disk. When you do the reformatt when it comes back up and runs through the process it does not ask for the product key? It reformats and when machine is supposedly all set up and ready to go half the information such as ethernet card, audio drivers etc is not there. If you are doing a complete reinstall should it not ask for the product key??? This really has me puzzled, I have reformatted 3 times, and am not coming up with the proper setup.

I was trying to reformatt a brand new xp onto the harddrive cause for some reason the old one won't load up to desktop and it says system32/config is missing or something and needs reapir but i had try to repair several times and it freezes. So when i put the xp disc in it ask me to press f8 to agree and stuff to install windows XP just after that, it says at the bottom searching for pervious version of microsoft windows, i had restarted many times and tryed again but nothing ever happens it just says it. I even tryed leaving it to load for 14 hours and nothing happened..... im guessing something from the pervious version of windows was corrupted so it wouldnt install a fresh copy. But i really need u guys help on this. Can someone tell me how to fix this problem all i want is a fresh copy of xp on the harddrive and all the windows gone.

I had no problems reformatting back to NTFS from XFS, no problems on install, but when I start up I have no sound, and no connection to the internet or to my other machine (which is also an XP machine).When I check the hardware my audio and ethernet come up yellow. I think the audio gives me a code 10 and the ethernet gives a code 28 (I could be wrong about the code 28 I didn't write it down). Now the really odd thing about this is that I put in my Ubuntu live CD and booted Ubuntu up, and right away I had audio and internet running straight from the live CD so I know the hardware must be good. I'm actually posting this from firefox running off of my live CD.I even tried installing a different ethernet card (the one I am using is integrated on the MOBO) and it recognizes it but won't let me get a connection.

The os was installed by my former roommate, without my permission, and I believe it may not be a legal copy. I've been trying to reformat the hard drive and install a copy of Windows XP Professional, which is legal, but it tells me wrong dos version whenever I try to do this. My former roommate also partitioned the drive, also without my permission. I would like to remove the partition as well, but don't really know how.
